Ants are actually smarter than roaches. In fact, when a large King ant with wings from another colony enters the Queen's colony, the colony quickly attacks the King ant to find out if it is food. The wings are clipped and all creveces are searched for soft penetration. Ants will eat from inside the prey's body to outside. As the King ant moves through the colony, if the ant doesn't make it to the Queen, the King will become food. Nothing gets wasted. After mating, the King ant will leave the colony and die shortly. Those Kings look like large termites but are smaller than the Queen. If you were to put a bunch of roaches in any ant colony, the colony of ants would quickly attack to seek food and protect the queen. The roaches would not work as an army; the roaches would flee by scattering. Even waterbugs and palmetto bugs have no chance. The ant picks apart soft tissue in all areas. Then rips with tiny claws or large ones in the case of the African driver ants.
Why do I know so much? I watched a show on the discovery channel back in Jan of this yr. And yes, ants have been around as long as roaches, if not longer. Research if you don't believe me.

I fuckin HATE ants (went to college in the South) but I hate the white man's mentality of "let's kill them so we can learn about them"
When aliens land here and start fucking up our world....we shouldn't be mad, because it's all in the name of research.
I think there has been too many tears shed over those ants in this thread. All the killing, of humans and of future food/clothes/game, and it's really that big of an outrage to destroy one ant colony in order to learn about it? I'm sure there are plenty more where that came from and it's hard to place a price on learning until you know what can be learned...
I think other animals have as much right to life as humans, but as human right to life has a ways to go, lets not be too quick to holler "ant genocide" when the ants will probably outlast us...

also the south american army ant ( thats what I think they are called ) are some of the most destructive ants alive.
They dont build ant farms, they just move in great number.
They eat everything that stands in their path...even animals and humans would get the business.

I know, I'd have probably been the first to say it myself, the large pro-ant sentiment's just kind of funny...
But that colony must be one in a million, it would seem to be an acceptable cost for research.
now i want an ant farm...
