A t-shirt for sale at a Marietta restaurant is causing quite a stir among those who believe it is racially offensive. The shirt bears an image of monkey eating a banana and references Barack Obama. FOX 5's Portia Bruner spoke to the restaurant owner selling the shirts and to those offended by the imagery

Re: Obama T-shirt Sparks Protests at Marietta Restaurant

They are going to keep doing stuff like this until November. They like to get black people riled up just like when they say n***** or any other racial slur. The only problem now is that he is getting national attention.:smh:

Re: Obama T-shirt Sparks Protests at Marietta Restaurant

A lot of white folks are gonna show their true colors during this election year.

Re: Obama T-shirt Sparks Protests at Marietta Restaurant

Monkeys have small brains, thin lips, straight hair, white skin, and no ass. I'll bet that describes the designer of that T-shirt, too.

Yep, the white folks at work who we knew wouldn't vote for Obama even if he raised the dead, is coming out of the woodwork and letting the racist opinions and slurs slip. A lot of it is like what Huckabee did, cant really put your finger on it, but the real shit is slipping.

Utah company causes nationwide uproar over 'Sock Obama'

6/13 10:30 pm SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A toy being sold over the internet by a Utah couple is causing an uproar from supporters of democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. It’s a sock monkey wearing a suit with a lapel pin for Obama.

Supporters of Obama have been filling online forums and blogs with angry words over what they see as the degrading depiction of a black man as a monkey.

Such portrayals are a throw back to the days of “Jim Crow” laws in southern states. The depictions were designed to make one man appear inferior, less than human, for no other reason than the color of his skin. From different blogs, one writer puts it simply: “The 'Sock Obama' is disgusting.” Others say its makers are racists.

With such a reaction, it is ironic that the toy was being marketed to Obama supporters. The sales pitch on the website reads:

“We don’t get enough of him at his public speaking events. Now you can have your very own TheSockObama™ 24/7! Fall in love with your chosen candidate all over again.”

The Sock Obama is the creation of David and Elizabeth Lawson of West Jordan. They say they are shocked by the anger. In responding to a handful of the emails that are filling their inbox, they wrote:

“We at TheSockObama Co. are saddened that some individuals have chosen to misinterpret our plush toy. It is not, nor has it ever been, our objective to hurt, dismay or anger anyone. We guess there is an element of naiveté on our part, in that we don't think in terms of myths, fables, fairy tales and folklore. In earnest folks, we're so sorry we offended anybody.”

So far, few web commentators are buying their plea of “naiveté,” especially since the Lawsons have said nothing about stopping the sale of their Sock Obama.

Kiosk operator must exit after impasse;
Concord Mills wanted political items removed

CONCORD Talks between the operator of a politically conservative kiosk and the management of Concord Mills went nowhere Tuesday.

The kiosk operator, Loren Spivack, and his merchandise will have to be gone at the end of business on Friday.

Spivack says the mall managers offered him a deal: If he removed three bumper stickers and a T-shirt that all made negative political statements about President Obama, he could renew his lease that is due to expire Friday. Spivack refused the offer, calling it a matter of principle.

“This was a very difficult decision for me,” Spivack said. “We are here supporting freedom of speech.”

One of the bumper stickers the mall wanted him to stop selling reads: “Al Qaida's two favorite days, 9/11 and Nov. 4, 2008,” a reference to last Election Day when Obama defeated John McCain.

Spivack says mall management told him “those sentiments were too provocative.”

In a statement, Concord Mills said it had the right to remove controversial items in an effort to provide shoppers with “a pleasant, neutral environment.”

The statement read, in part, “Simply, we met with Mr. (Spivack) in good faith to resolve the issue and offered what we believe to be a fair and equitable solution. Mr. (Spivack) has not agreed to remove the objectionable merchandise and will be moving out of Concord Mills at the end of his lease.”

Spivack says he will continue to sell his merchandise online and will look for another place to set up a new kiosk.
