The Mavericks are working on details of a contract that will lock up former Los Angeles Laker Devean George.

The 6-8, free-agent forward was a vital part of the Lakers' championship teams with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. That experience is what has the Mavericks excited about the possibility of landing him with a veteran's minimum contract, about $1.2 million guaranteed.

George averaged 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds last season, playing 71 games.

The Mavericks on Monday finalized the trade that brings backup point guard Anthony Johnson to the team for Darrell Armstrong, Josh Powell and Rawle Marshall. Even if Powell and Marshall are waived by the Pacers, they will not be returning to Dallas.

The Mavericks, according to Johnson, believe that a veteran with NBA Finals experience will better serve them at this point than young projects. George would fit that billing.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Grizzlies re-signed guard Chucky Atkins to a one-year contract on Monday.

Atkins averaged 11.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 43 games with Grizzlies after signing with them on Jan. 23 - five days after agreeing to a buyout of his contract with Washington. He was averaging 6.7 points and 2.5 assists with the Wizards, but was dissatisfied with his playing time.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Having him and Damon Stoudamire as experienced point guards who can mentor our younger players is invaluable to this team," Grizzlies president Jerry West said in a statement.

The 5-11, 185-pound Atkins joined the league as a free agent with Orlando in 1999 and has also played for Detroit, Boston and the Los Angeles Lakers.

I don't know why Mitch the Bitch offered Banks to come to LA again when he was traded there a few years ago but the trade was reversed because of somebody not passing their physical and Banks said he was not interested in playing ball in Cali. Plus he knows the Suns would of been a better fit and dont act like the Lakers were the only ones to offer him the full mid level. Twolves were one of the teams as well. Many years ago there lived an emperor who loved beautiful new clothes so much that he spent all his money on being finely dressed. His only interest was in going to the theater or in riding about in his carriage where he could show off his new clothes. He had a different costume for every hour of the day. Indeed, where it was said of other kings that they were at court, it could only be said of him that he was in his dressing room!

One day two swindlers came to the emperor's city. They said that they were weavers, claiming that they knew how to make the finest cloth imaginable. Not only were the colors and the patterns extraordinarily beautiful, but in addition, this material had the amazing property that it was to be invisible to anyone who was incompetent or stupid.

"It would be wonderful to have clothes made from that cloth," thought the emperor. "Then I would know which of my men are unfit for their positions, and I'd also be able to tell clever people from stupid ones." So he immediately gave the two swindlers a great sum of money to weave their cloth for him.

They set up their looms and pretended to go to work, although there was nothing at all on the looms. They asked for the finest silk and the purest gold, all of which they hid away, continuing to work on the empty looms, often late into the night.

"I would really like to know how they are coming with the cloth!" thought the emperor, but he was a bit uneasy when he recalled that anyone who was unfit for his position or stupid would not be able to see the material. Of course, he himself had nothing to fear, but still he decided to send someone else to see how the work was progressing.

The swindlers stayed up the entire night before the procession was to take place, burning more than sixteen candles. Everyone could see that they were in a great rush to finish the emperor's new clothes. They pretended to take the material from the looms. They cut in the air with large scissors. They sewed with needles but without any thread. Finally they announced, "Behold! The clothes are finished!"

The emperor came to them with his most distinguished cavaliers. The two swindlers raised their arms as though they were holding something and said, "Just look at these trousers! Here is the jacket! This is the cloak!" and so forth. "They are as light as spider webs! You might think that you didn't have a thing on, but that is the good thing about them."

"Yes," said the cavaliers, but they couldn't see a thing, for nothing was there.

i will say that the "punishment" of my squad held a silver lining for the NBA career of a friend, carl herrera (whose nickname was "panama"). in part due to way events unfolded, it resulted in panama being drafted 3rd in the 2nd round of the 1990 draft by the houston rockets. panama went on to win 2 consecutive NBA titles in 1994 and 1995.

BTW, since you started talking about your neighbors , i'll add that the assistant coach who recruited me is now the head coach of a division 1 major and has taken his squad to the NCAA finals. a former teammate of mine won multiple NBA titles (but had a chance at more) and is an assistant coach for a NBA squad.
