Angelina Jolie Says Daughter Zahara Will Attend Spelman College in the Fall: 'a Very Special Place'

Angelina adopted an Ethiopian child

Her biological mother’s name is Mentewab Dawit Lebiso. She was born on January 8, 2005, in Awassa, Ethiopia.

Angelina Jolie adopted her first daughter, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, in Ethiopia in July of 2005 when she was just 6-months-old. Now, 12 years later, Zahara's biological mother is asking to reconnect with her daughter.

Mentewab Dawit Lebiso spoke to the DailyMail and explained that she's hoping to be a part of Zahara's life.

"I just want her to know that I am alive and here and long to be able to speak with her," Lebiso said. "I do not want my daughter back but just to be in contact with her and be able to call her up and talk with her."

She's not "black" She's Ethiopian. She's not an African American, she's an Ethiopian-American

Zahara Jolie-Pitt is the eldest daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The 17-year-old was born as a result of rape in Ethiopia and her biological mother, Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, gave her up for adoption at six months.

Five years ago, Dawit Lebiso told the Daily Mail that although he “deeply” thanks Angelina Jolie for adopting his daughter, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss her every day and wants to see her.

In an interview with Reuters, the woman revealed that she was raped. “The man took out a knife and put a hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t scream. He raped me and then disappeared, ”she recounted.

Scared to death, she admitted that “she was afraid to reveal that she was raped because she lived in a community where rape is considered a taboo, even if it was by force.”

Due to the background of Zahara’s birth, in addition to the conditions of poverty in which she lives, the woman did not hesitate to give the little girl up for adoption. “I never refused. I think my daughter is very lucky to be adopted by such a globally famous woman. I wish you the best of luck”.

you guys miss the point by a country mile. :smh:

I'm not saying black americans own the term black. I'm saying the concept of race as we understand and use it is rooted in that european concept. People from the african continent didnt universally use that term to identify themselves and that term wasn't universally used by europeans until around 13-1400s as they were making inroads to and thru the continent.

I said this before

And saying that Africans aren't black is NOT a diminishment of them at all. Its saying theyre MORE than just a skin color designation.

Zahara can tell you where she comes from in Africa on down to the ethnic group within the country. YOU can't do that because all we have as BLACK americans is a skin color designation. And that is a direct result of the atlantic slave trade. LOSS OF IDENTITY and having it replaced with a color!

The DUMBEST thing I've ever heard of is the term BLACK AFRICANS. If china was flooded with immigrants would you call the natives YELLOW chinese??? How the fuck do a people who live in their own land get and accept another term of identification OTHER than what they are?? Do you know how many ethnic tribes there are in South Africa alone...yet theyre called BLACK south africans?? Who benefits from that??? Cause I can tell you it wasn't the Zulu, Xhosa, Bapedi, Batswana, South Ndebele, Basotho, Venda, Tsonga and Swazi. And all of those DIVERSE ETHNIC CULTURES gets homogenized into a SINGLE skin color designation and you all think thats acceptable?? :smh::smh::smh: And I'm willing to bet NONE of them referred or identified themselves as "black" until the europeans arrived stuck a gun in their face and said this is what we're calling you!

ok , u finally gettin thru, cos I can tell u many don't see this simple shit, but guess what the next level to that is ? when Africans use the term Black they use it as encompassing ALL of our collective Africaness, as in its now bigger than the nation tribe country , the same way FELA uses it, same way Hugh masakella, Mandella etc, continental freedom fighters use it, they understood that their fight was bigger than their nation.tribe country, so when they use it they arent using It to reduce us to a color but to Join us into a collective focus

I appreciate the argument and the effort..I think Africans definitely need to join together but the term of "Black" probably shouldn't be the banner thats its done under. I feel theres something NQR about co-opting and trying to redefine a term that doesn't apply to them. If you know who and what you are in terms of ethnicity and culture then youre not "black"

The only issue I have with all Africans claiming black it is that it lessens the offense committed against the victims of the Atlantic slave trade that would include their descendants, particularly in mainland US.

Morgan Freeman: it’s an insult to be called African-American

‘African-American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title,” continued Freeman. “Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American.’ What does it really mean?”

As much as I admire and am a fan of Freeman...he clearly has no understanding of why African-American/Black American is the most accurate identity for the us. It speaks to the loss of our proper identity. Because most of us don't know the particulars of our African heritage beyond the most general knowledge of you came from this continent (hence the generalized term AFRICAN-american rather than say Nigerian-american or Ghanian-american and you can break it down even further from there) therefore we're stuck with a skin color designation of black..and we've been building a culture and heritage from that.

With the push for reparations and a reckoning of the effects and results of the Atlantic slave trade and the havoc it wreaked on a group of people thats so far STILL shows enduring effects...its important to understand what "Black" means and entails for us.

Africans claiming black defuses and muddles that point. On top of it just NOT being an accurate identification of them. :dunno:
