Andrew Bogut: He Tried to Tell 'Em to Save $$ in 2007

The Sydney Morning Herald's David Sygall quotes the former top overall pick on life in the NBA. It's not pretty. One of the more memorable passages:

"The public's got it right, a lot of NBA stars are arrogant and like to spend lots of money and have lots of girlfriends and all that."

"The smarter guys don't do that. They like to live a regular life and want to retire and be set up. About 80 per cent of them go broke by the time they retire or come close to it."

"If you want to keep living that lifestyle when you're 40, but the millions have stopped coming in, you suddenly find your friends are gone and you've got nothing. It's a tough situation for some of those guys, especially the ones who come from the ghettos or tough upbringings."

"The funny thing is that we have compulsory tutoring each week where they teach you to manage your money and they tell you about all the things that can happen to you, people trying to take advantage of you, but it's amazing how many of the guys totally ignore it."

"I guess if you're a normal person and all of a sudden you're getting $10 million a year, it can go to your head. But I really think it's just the culture over there. I would never want my child to be brought up in an environment like that, where if you have money, you're supposed to flaunt it and make everyone jealous. The American attitude is 'We're the best'. That's why the NBA guys who come from other countries, the Europeans, all sort of stick together away from the game."

Even if it's the gospel truth, I'm thinking this interview will get him dunked on and/or fouled a couple of extra times next season.

I also have three thoughts:

I always appreciate honestly. Takes guts to be frank.
There are plenty of very seriously good characters in the NBA. If Bogut can find those guys and hang out with them, what's it to him if many players behave in a way Bogut doesn't like in their free time? And if he can't find those good guys, why not?

When people complain, I always kind of feel like asking: well, what are you going to do about it? He's a former top overall pick. He's an up-and-comer. And he's pretty big. Can't he influence the culture on his team?

Andrew is 100% correct...Mu'fuckas want to BALL TO THEY FALL... and that EXACTLY what happens... they FALL... Take for example... Junior Bridgeman and Kenny Anderson... Junior didn't make even HALF the money Kenny made... and yet Junior is LIVING HIG on the hog and Kenny is damn near back to living like he was when he was in LEFRAK CITY???... :smh: It makes no GODDAMN SENSE... Dez Bryant JUST GOT INTO THE LEAGUE... and he ALREADY has to re-structure his contract because of a FUCKIN' JEWELRY PURCHASE... :smh: Eddie Curry's ONLY motivation for getting into shape is because he's just about OUT OF HERE... T.O. sitting there CRYING... LIKE BEEEATCH... because the well has DRIED UP... SALUTE to Andrew for shooting from the hip and calling it how he sees it...

Good shit from Bogut. Hopefully his statement can keep the rest of the Bucks on the right path along with other cats in the league.

I remember John Stockton said the same thing in the last meeting in 1998 and people were pissed off.

Stockton had no problem that owners wanted to lower the cap saying he and his family is set.

This what gets me

During the 1998 lockout Kenny Anderson two months in the lockout

”I was thinking about selling one of my cars,” [Anderson] said recently, laughing. ”I don’t need all of them. You know, just get rid of the Mercedes.”

After all, he can always fall back on the Porsche Carrera, the customized Range Rover or the Lexus sedan. When you have eight vehicles registered in your name or your wife’s, there are choices.

”A lot of people can’t understand why the owners and players are fighting over money and how it might hurt the season,” said Anderson, referring to the league’s growing labor chasm. ”I’d be upset too if I was a fan, paying our salaries. But it’s like they say: the more you make, the more you spend. And right now, without my check, I have to start getting tight.””They can burn a hole in your pocket real quick,” he said. ”I’m not saying it in a funny way, but you’ve got your schooling, day care, nanny. It just goes on and on.”

Looking at Wilson Chandler and others people wonder why the NBA is looked as overpaid players out of touch.

JJ Barea has made less money than most players since coming in the league yet he says he is good and is prepared to sit out a year if he has to.

Anthony Morrow too.

Funny these players drafted in the 2nd round or went undrafted money situation seems better than the first round drafted players

:lol::lol::lol: wow Kenny Anderson set the bar huh.

I'm serious it's hard to explain when the average NBA player is paid 5 million dollars how these players are in these situations.

Malaik hit it on the head the other day.

I mean not to pick on Wilson Chandler but look at him. He is now regretting signing with China because as he said "it was risked." but he wanted money now. Now that the NBA owners and NBPA have started meeting more he realize he really could had fucked up..

In the words of DA you have to wonder how bad is Wilson's situation that he rushed into a decision without fully knowing the situation?

It's called nigga shit. Same stuff can be said about the guy who works at Micky D's, or a city job, or a damn doctor.

Live beyond your means and you are fucked.

Learn how money works or be a victim of debt.

If you got a lot of dough don't finance your friend's and family's dreams.

I must admit that I would probably wild out at first but damn homie. The average salary is 5.5million. Taxes and agents.... 3 million/yr. $250K/mo.... Come on man. I'm just saying. They make that even in a distressed economy. Guaranteed that money in a distressed economy.

Consumer lifestyles. They make all that money and continue to hang around people who only want to see it spent. Careers aint that long so I would be at some business school, lunch with business men. Shit at the very least have a slew of profitable franchises. Something to generate some monthly income. ROI in 2 years..

Some of the agents out there convinced their athletes to put them on an allowance to where they are going to receive checks over this whole next season. Smarter athletes.

Kenny was also a known alcoholic who used to walk around with 10K in his pocket EVERY DAY... He was cool with friends of mine... His alcoholism was outta control!

There have been a few foreign athletes who've said disparaging things about the NBA players/culture to their hometown newspapers over the years... Very interesting the idea of the star American athlete... You know another reason could be that in their home countries basketball players usually aren't the biggest thing... It's usually soccer stars, or rugby/aussie football players... Soccer stars are known for some outrageous/infamous shit... that could be the difference as well...

He is right...its one thing to splurge every now and then but it you tryin to live it up like you got Saudi money then eventually that shit will get to you.

If you making a couple mil a year then you can live nice anywhere in this damn country without hurting for money. There is no excuse for not having better money management skills.

yup. america's culture is sick.

thanks for this.

See watching this video is why I call bullshit when people say Wilson Chandler china deal was smart because he needed money.

You don't see players who have made less than Chandler signing with China.

JJ isn't stupid he know after what he done in the post season he is going cash in big time

Why is it this Australian CAC gets it but too many niggas don't?

Or just refuse to listen and think it can't/won't happen to them? :smh:

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Because they are taught from a early age the value of a dollar and how to make it work for you. Most of us aren't. Not to mention your friends and family pressuring you into helping them live out their dream life and it's easy to see how so many are quick to spend it as soon as it comes in.

true but at the same time you would think after seeing many players who came before them going broke would teach them a lesson

I remember this interview. Don't you find it convenient that they left out the quote where he says that hes not into wasting his money on flashy things all he has is a car collection. Fucking hypocrite....
