Anatomy of a start up is for people who want to start a business but don't know how. It written with a for us by us mentality. Meaning I dont give a fuck about buthering the King's English! Just know I will tell it like it is! If you want a well written book on how to start a business - then go get Wendy Beech's book! Without further ado, good luck and keep on reading!

It another new year another day another dollar being made and your ass is at work working slave’s wages. I know y’all were happy to leave the nest that your folks made. But reality is a bytch! College/Military was a nice phase but now is the time to reap the awards.

Grant under the current President’s administration the economy wasn’t as hot as the previous President’s tenure. Clinton was lucky and unlucky. The Dot.com boom was cranking out more millionaire than any other business era.

Bottom line, I, Duane Harris is going to help you achieve the America Dream. The American Dream is basically success and living prosperously and healthy and debt-free.

The American Dream is not living paycheck to paycheck and not having anything to
show for it. What I mean to show for it, when you own something outright it is yours and it can’t be taken away unless you owe tax to Uncle Sam. But to have the title to your car and deeds to your house or real estate is an example of the typical American Dream.

The ability to give generously to not so fortunate and for those in needs is a two-fold process. It is always good to give and it is tax deductible! Oprah isn’t dumb!

But before I proceed, keep in mind what works for me may not work for you. BGOL and it heirs isn’t responsible for your success or failure and the same disclaimer goes for me. I am just giving out information and sharing experiences. The only thing in my thread that I post that I will not reveal is anything that is consider confidential and a threat to my bottom line.

So welcome aboard! And don’t be a follower! Be a doer! Don’t let anybody hold you down and ignore the haters because they really want to be you!

All right, it is 2006 another year and another day. On this glorious 4th day of January 2006, I am sitting here in front of this computer wondering how I can help some of yall go to the next level.

Ok the first thing to do if you want to start your own business is to buy yourself a journal. Now we’re some technology oriented it is a shame to put all our John Hancock’s to waste. Get a cheap journal for yourself. Write legibility so ONLY you can read it. If you are unable to write, then using a popular word software program. And print it out and put it into a 3 ring binder. Your journal should be easy accessible to you. No you are not going to write about your daily adventure on BGOL and who got the biggest tits and the baddest ass on the planets. But you are going to write whatever pops to your mind. Ask yourself what would make you happy in life. It can be a yacht, a trip around the world, a Maybach, a million dollar crib, hospitals in third world countries, a trip to outer space, and so for. The point is the sky is the limit. Dream doesn’t have any boundaries.

The most important thing to understand about dreams and goals is their differences. Dreams aren’t necessary going to happen. I can dream for a day where nobody gets kills on this planet. Goals are often benchmarks and not the final conclusion of a project that you take on to make it happen. I can aim for a day of no murder on my street. That is a realistic goal but it has a variable. Time and People are the two key variables. Variables are variants. Variants are like a dice game. You can roll dices and you’ll keep rolling but you cannot control the final outcome of a roll. What goes… goes!

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at duanebharris@yahoo.com. Questions are in regards to this thread, anything outside I may have to charge you! Lol

Ok now what I am trying to stress about the important of a journal. You will never know when your AHA moment will occur. An AHA moment is known as an epiphany.

Also you may have an invention that could be beneficial to a certain segment of the population on the planet we call Earth. Keep in mind, a product WILL never appeal to the WHOLE PLANET. Unless it was water, air and gasoline! Not even everybody like the same water lol but water is water. This is debatable but the point is unless your product is the Fountain of Youth and can regulate the aging process then you could be the world first Trillionaire lol.

Through my research, I discover the successful business folks who are rich get rich by offering a service or a product to a segment of a market. They were able to expand to other areas of the business realm.

The business realm is a sector of different businesses and they are all fall under a different category and tax category and so forth. When I get the exact name I will let you know later.

Ok so by now I assume the majority of you are educated enough to have a business plan/marketing plan. If you don’t have one, please stop reading now and start on one. A wise man once said it bad to not have a plan because you are setting yourself up for failure already. And a business plan/marketing plan is an invaluable tool. Not only it objective is to raise money but to serve as a guide as for yourself as the HNIC of your own company. Well in the corporate world the HNIC is often regard as the CEO/Chairman/Founder/Managing Director/President. Sometime they have dual titles but wear many hats.

Ok, I will talk more about raising capitals later for those who aren’t at that level. Keep in mind my approach is to keep you motivate and the goal of this thread is to get your company start.

The most important thing you will do is to create a name for your business identity. The law on a local, state and federal level requires it. You need a business license in the area you are operating in. Home based business is legal but the law said you could operate from home as administrative office only. But you would have travel away from home and you couldn’t have any signage outside your house/apartment. Yet, friends came come over but customers can’t. Now I met some people whom in a bootstrap situation. My advice to them has always been meeting the potential client at a coffee café with a wireless high-speed connection. A PowerPoint presentation will do wonder. But often time not everyone can do this, so if you have to have your client meet you at your home office. Let them park in your driveway, and the room that is your showcase for your business is where you should let your client meet. But bottom line be careful because if you got crazy neighbors who don’t have anything to do but complain then you could have problems but if it done right you would realize the need to move to an office down the road once budget permits.

Now you can’t call yourself Nike or BGOL or Microsoft. One trademark infringement is a serious offense. First warning is using a nice stern cease and desist warning from the company’s lawyers. After that first warning you better cease and desist pronto unless you are 110% sure you have the name before the other party does. The biggest thing with sole proprietorship is that they tend to name the business after themselves and there isn’t anything wrong with that. And it doesn’t cost that much. But once money start coming in, you need to protect your brand name. Think about it, your folks gave you a name and nobody else can take it. Grant there are 1000 John Smith and Does but they are protect by their unique social security number. Treat your business name like a social security number once it blows up. But if you can afford to save a grand for an indemnity down the road then it would be worth to invest $1000 for a good trademark attorney. Instruct them to do the research.

Ok now the first thing for any business owner to do is to get a business license!

The law requires a business license to be acquired by you, because it establishes your business as a revenue producing entity. After all you are trying to make that money too! Uncle Sam and her sister bka the county and states want their cut. That’s the American way! But don’t sweat because if you have a good accountant, the IRS and State got to cut you a check when tax time comes. More on that later.

Ok how you get a business license. Well the key to make this task simple is first where are you going to be based at. If you going to do the bulk of your business from home at first then get the business license from your county’s finance office or licensing office. Thank God for the internet, it makes the search process much easier.

So for my new company which is DBH ENTERPRISES COMPANY. It is consider being a sole proprietorship at this point. I live in good old DeKalb County in the state of Georgia.

Do yourself a favorite, make google a favorite place and bookmark this site. Google is the shyt when it comes to search engine. And no I am not a compesentated endorser.

I typed in Business License Requirement DeKalb County Georgia and hit search. Boom it return a whole bunch of stuff. Now grant there will be sites that will offer to set it up for you for a fee but you can save a lot of money if you could be a patient and I will walk you through. But if time is a factor and money isn’t an issue then go away and let somebody else do it for you. But you want to establish accountability for your own business decision-making and be in the know.

Ok I linked to the DeKalb County Business site. Now if you in the boonies don’t despair it is going to take a little more investigation. Now keep in mind down the road when you expand, wherever you establish shops you must get a license for that shop. Example if I decide to add another location to my business DBH ENTERPRISE to downtown Hotlanta in the future. I must also register in Fulton County to get a license to establish my 2nd location.

That is why they said location, location and location is a very important decision. But I say if somebody can sell you crack on the corner for $10 then shyt it doesn’t matter as long your products/services speak for yourself!

Ok the beauty of the internet, you can print out forms that you will need. And if you’re unsure what you need, you can call them up. Most of the time they won’t answer but they will return your call if you left a message or if the licensing place isn’t far from you, pay them a visit and ask the questions you need to ask. They won’t tell you wrong because they are the government. Liquor licenses on the other hands is a pain in the behind to get but a corner store isn’t hard to set up and it a shame that there should be more Black owners owning a corner store than the Asian/Far East owners. I aint got nothing against them owning a store but the customer service could be better.

Ok you are going to spend $100 to $200 for a business license. It really varies from town to town. Just understand what you are getting into first most!

DBH Enterprises Company is going to be billed $110.00 but there is always a catch with this license.

There is a line for DeKalb plus Gross Receipts, Employee Fee, Flat Fee of $50.00, and Administrative Fee of $60.00 and for those who are a professional (doctors/dentist/lawyer ~ jobs that requires you to pass the state bar/board of medicine/jobs that are regulated by the state will have to cough up $400).

Damn, I’m already in the red lol but it takes money to make money! I will get back to yall later with the final fees.

PLEASE DO THIS ASAP – GET AN ACCORDION FOLDER. PLACE ALL ITEMS RELATED TO YOUR BUSINESS IN THE MONTH THAT THE EXPENSES OCCUR. IT CAN BE A BUSINESS LUNCH…GAS (I will double check with my accountant) DINNER…Books… clothes…computer related items… anything that you spend is a BUSINESS EXPENSES if it business r elated and can be justify. A good accountant will tell you whether or not it is deductible or not.

The other important thing is you will be require to fill out a HOP form if you use a room in your crib as a business at home. HOP is county zone commissioners speak for Home Occupation. A HOP means an occupation carried by you at your dwelling unit. Your dwelling unit is your crib. And is operated in accordance with applicable provisions of Zoning Ordinance. In DeKalb County, a home occupation supplemental registration form is obtainable from the development department.

Now before I go to get my license. This is step one in making your business a legal establish reality. Congrats you just hired yourself as CEO/President/Founder/HNIC!

Ok before I go, homework time! What you think I just going to let yall wait and do nothing. Go do something to make your dream of becoming a business owner a reality.

1) Research on Trademark Protection for your business. List the pros and cons.
2) Review this article and give your honest opinion on how it could affect your business. http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/0,4621,314762,00.html
3) Write down key obstacles that are either holding you back or delaying your venture from employee to employer.
4) Look at your resume, and give yourself an honest assertion of your skill sets and how much would you pay for someone with the exact skill sets as yours.
5) What is the key to any business’ success?

You don’t have to do this homework. But it will enrich your knowledge and expand your grasp of how things are done in the business world.

If you want to participate, just respond in following format:

HOMEWORK for 1/4/06
1) Pros are …. Cons are ……
2) It WOULD affect my business….
3) Key obstacles in my way are…
4) I am worth $200 an hour
5) The key to any business success is or are…

The homework deadline is this Friday, which is Jan 6, 2006 at noon. Get to cracking!

A follow up will be posted for Step One, which is Getting a Business License.
The next step after step one will focus on Business Structure Type ~ if you want to wait till Friday BEFORE you get your business license that is fine. Remember everybody thinks and do things differently.

HAVE A GOOD DAY! AND GO MAKE THAT MONEEEEEEEEEY!

Oh well no responses yet.....and nobody did the homework.. damn shame... lol

Well i wont be lengthy today.....

Just a quick follow up..... I registered for my business license. Very helpful people at the business licensing office in downtown decatur. I was dealing with this cute but too much makeup/perfume wearing chick..... she had a banging body but uhhhhhhhhm her face was toooooo pancaked lol but ms. richardson a very helpful assistant.....

I was told I would get my license in the mail in 21 business days which is the equalivent of 3 weeks.

Since I wasn't operating the business in my name I am required to do a DBA registristraion. I was told to contact the Trademark Department and do that. I was given a number.

On a personal note my fucking car fucking punked on me.... It is amazing how fucker wont pull over to help you but they only want to look at you and laugh. Fuck them mofo!!!

I got a nice 1997 Acura 3.2 TL with 180,000 miles and I aint trading that bytch in esp when I own the title on it. That V6 engine is bad but the gas (premium only can be a mofo). The problem is I gotta get a new fuel pump. Advantage Auto Place is the place to shop for parts and if you know a mechanic hire him to come to your house. They are cheaper than the shop. The only thing you are giving up is the luxury of a warranty if anything happen you are ass out but if the person is honest and trustworthy then it shouldnt be an issue. I end up paying $140 for the fuel pump then paying him $65 plus $20 diagonitic fee. The shop would have charged me an arm and a leg. But I lost $125 in towing fees and not to mention 6 hours of aggravation. Intially I thought it was just the battery until I found out that my wifey been using cheap ass gas .....smh lawdy

Anyway the morale of the story is to have a contigency plan in place.

To come to think about it, Nawlins and the event that took place on 9/11 mofo dont have a contingency plan. If there was one ready then all the chaos that took place after the tower collaspes or when the levees broke loose and the water just raise the fuck up, you can't control mother nature or a terrorist act but you can be prepare for the unexpect.

Mofo forgot what they learn in boy and girl scouts. BE PREPARE!!!

So it may seem time consuming but it will save you helluva of aggravation and $$$ and most importantly your life and namesake.

So I learn that before the unexpect to have a contigency plan.

In case of shyt happen .. I would be able to contact this and that and the matter will be under control and not so time consuming.

So in the business world, if supplier A run out of shyt or is affect by a storm or terrorist's act or whatsoever. Your ass is out of luck if you depend soley on that supplier to restock your inventory or services. Also have a plan B or bka back up plan.
Never wait till the last minute because that will eat into your profit line and leave no room for neogation. Remember this shyt "I need this shyt at yesterday's price not at today's price" Meaning when you are in a jam you aint going to have the room of luxury to neogiate to get the product you need for your client/customers.

Have at least at least 3 to 5 separate suppliers in different area of the country that can supply the same product at the same price. An agreement may be need to protect your bottom line with each vendor. And they dont have to know who you get the product from. But the standard procedure in business is to get it from one key supplier that you are comfortable with. The way I operate is to get the best wholesale price from anybody who offer the best deal. I usually operate on the bidding system and then I would choose the top 3 and go from there. But do your system according to the way you can save and make money and that is the bottom line!

Ok I will be back with part 3.......getting the neccesary numbers for your business and why you need those numbers and address you should use.....stay tune

HAVE A GOOD DAY! AND GO MAKE THAT MONEEEEEEEEEY!

for those waiting on me to tell ya how to do a business plan or converting an idea to a business plan.. i hate to burst your bubble... go to the libary or bookstore and get a book on how to write a business plan or get business plan pro...it will walk ya step by step.....for those who are lazy then dont bother starting a business.but there are templates for business plans but ya can alter them to ya liking but only if not seeking funds.. i learn that from experience the best business plans that allow you to use opm are the one that you do yourself because nobody is going to be able to explain how you expect to run your business and make a profit.......The point of this thread is to show you how to get start once you finish with the business plan... I already got my business plan/marketing plan in place.....working on device/products/services...i will need a working model of the device that I want to sell......

Anyway...stay tune......

I was looking at my library and I found this book....... and I think this book should be the bread and butter of any future CEO who is a self starter and want to be a check cutter......a check cutter is someone who call the shots and responsible for other people's source of income....it good to be masa then a slave lol

So I apologize if I came off crass...that isnt my style.... but anyway to help ya become your own boss get this book by all mean necessary......

The book is worth 1000x than it retail price.

Get this book if you are in a rut or in the planning stage or just need a handy reference book.......

Kick Start Your Dream Business by Romanus Wolter

been a busy day so far.. been trying to land clients.....kinda hard when you dont have an establish presence in the business but if you charge half of your market worth most likely you will have that 1st client for the longest time and that client can become an asset to your contact with word of the mouth or estabishing a referral fee.

My goal is to land 25 clients for my company within 90 days. 25 clients would generate a gross of $60,000.00 a month. That is my goal ... since I am new - it most likely i will generate at least $10,000 a month with 25 clients.

The hard part for any new business owner: is selling your service/product without an establish presence but the easy part is selling yourself to the client. Just be yourself and be straightforward and honest.

Put yourself in your prospective's client shoes. Ask what you can do for them?
If they already have the service with someone else - ask them if they are happy ....dont let a rejection be the end of the road...give the same level of service that you would want for yourself...$$$$ in ya pocket but if ya bs ya be doing the walking!!!

Turn a rejection into a postive...

remember how a woman turn us down.. we are quick to be hurt or sad or mad.. now the last thing we want to look like some sissy wussy punk...just let their negative comment bounce off you....and ask if they could introduce you to someone else... well that same frame of thinking apply in the business world.......ask if they could refer you to someone else...when they see how good ya do a project for their referral..often 9 out of 10 time they would want to come with you...just dont rub it in their face or told ya so.. that a deal killer right there.....

Dont be weak but understand you gotta crawl before you can walk and after you can walk you can fly!

I just realize i need to get one of them big ass calender......personally I recommend the following as oppose the Buffie's Calender....sorry ya gotta focus on $$$ not T&A lol

I use this item for my business -
http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=846512&&An=text

whereas i can keep track of my daily/weekly progress... very critical....dont rely on the PDA all the time... but having a visual reminder in your office is a must.....

I just ordered one for myself... make sure you save the reciept as it is a deductable item for your business.......

hollah!

I got some investors from my family and friends... was able to raise $1000 from 10 family/friend who are now shareholders. I told them what I was doing and they want to make some money and explain to them it was a risk and all that good stuff but this is the power of using other people money to fund up your start up. I really didnt need it but I am using it for stationery and office supplies and some software I need for the business.

Ebay can be use for your business and the items are tax deductiable.. even those season tickets your purchased (u gotta entertain the client every now and then lol)

damn starting a business from scratch is some hard work..... but it is worth it in the long run.......

my peeps told me they went to a job fair and they only have 20 employers there and 5000 peeps show up throughtout the day at cobb galliera....i was like damn.....

waiting on the damn accountant to get back to me..... i definitely going to have to find a replacement.....cuz time is money..... as much I have use this mofo in the past .. it shouldnt be taking this long.. i ask the accountant what type of business structure i should use for company..... LLC.. or INC it..... or what.......

decisions decisions decisions!!!

stay tune......

Man, I appreciate what you are trying to do here... I have been reading the posts. I think you may have lost a little steam and focus on the steps involved here. Im going through the same process. Rather than starting another thread stating the same thing I will let you in on some thing that has helped me.

Startupnation.com

They have too much information for starting a business and can help greatly... there is a cool section with the 10steps for starting a business, complete with downloadable webinars and pdf's. These guys know their shit and will walk with you step by step. Keep it up mayne

khilphil appericate the link..but i didnt lose no steam....been too busy to post a blog.....but i will get back on the ball and that is the purpose of helping yall with this thread..... but thats a good link up but you are more than welcome to do your own thread because what works for me may not work for you....and everybody has their own approach in starting thier own business

Damn Dekalb County sloooooooow as fuck! It has been almost 20 days since I applied for the license for my business. Ole girl said it would take 21 business days..... well maybe it hasnt but it been damn 3 weeks since I have been there.

Also been dealing with the IRS... was advise to close out the other EIN since I have close that business since I am setting up a new structure but I told them that is fine and dandy considering Uncle Sam will rape you for failure to report income even if you didnt make any $$$$$$$$ with the business.

I'm meeting with 5 graphic artist for my business logo (trying to get a bid) and I am waiting for the Trademark Attorney from this firm in VA to get back to me. I was told it was $600 but the price may have went down since 2000.

Also I have been retooling with the business plan/marketing plan. I gotta touch base with my $$$ man.

IT does take a lot of work to start from scratch..but it a process....Rome wasnt built in a day!

Also Business Plan Pro....them mofo caught up with the bootlegger/reseller....and once you register a software with that particular company they lock it out from future registeration and render the software useless. I was maddddddd as fuck. But lucky I knew how to save shyt lol.... just have to reinstall and you get like ten "free" use before the software lock you out and you gotta register it online in order to work. damn anybody got the key to that shyt??? I might as well drop $180 on it.....

I am focusing on getting a booth at this trade show.....but I gotta get the License and account up......and then get in touch with a few companies that I would sign on as vendors since I would be an authorized dealer.

Now trying to find a company that deal with prestigious business address for start up... some business are in the business of this.....

saw one in buckhead for $200/mo........

www.hq.com is the site ..... but i am not settling on them just yet..... looking around and see what my options are..... since filing a business as a inc will be public records and I aint crazy about having my house address being made available

still havent recieved the #$@$#@!$ license as of yet... have to go downtown decatur and see what the hell was going on... mofo didnt answer their phone.....was told it was still pending approval... i like what the fuck.... and to give them a call in a week.... i explain i am really frustrated cuz I was promise that I would get the license in 3 weeks.....i got the gentlemen card...... i said to myself welcome to bureaucracy!

Still debating on the business structure....I am pretty set on making it an incorporation but got to do a little more research......

Also been investigating software type.... i have decide to make Quickbooks my choice of software for my company... and use their credit card manager program... I am looking to purchase a POS system bka known as credit card swiper and a mini printer... the cost is lower than leasing a terminal....

I can honestly tell you the hardest part with any business start up is getting it offical and legal so you can put your OPEN for business sign out for clients/consumers.

waiting on the mailman is like waiting on Santa Claus to bring you your gifts... if the license aint in the mailbox today.. i gonna personally go back to that joint and shoot it up with my mouth!!!

no seriously i will call them but it really woke me up and I am already left a message with the ceo of dekalb county and the commisoners that they aint getting my vote.

mofo need to read Business at the speed of thought by Bill Gates

Damn been over a $@#$# month and them assholes aint sent me the business license...

if yall see me on the news that a crazy man is holding the license office hostage until he get his license it aint me!

i just frustrated as hell and i am on my way to clear this shyt up !!!

damn finally got the licensing shyt straighten out....... will pick it up tomorrow at 11:00 am...... mofo are understaffed and the lady was like it very busy since everybody and their mamas are trying to set up a business. she said the backlog is crazy.....

however i aint trying to heard all that.... i just lost 2 potential clients already......I cant be mad at the clients but however I didnt get back to the clients in a timely fashion but I was under the impression I was gonna assume operations this month...but unfortunately i drop the ball .....errrrr damnit!

lesson to be learn have ya shyt in order before ya put the open for business sign .....

damn i havent shown no profit as of yet...just past the 30 days mark on day 39 night already. ugh!

truth be told......losing that client really fucked me up cuz I worked so hard to get my foot in the door and I allowed myself get bent out of shaped over this damn license but I thought the client want me to start working for her this month but regardless I learn a good lesson.

When you got their interest you gotta strike (move fast as possible) to get their inks on the contract and the $$$ in your company's treasury account. Or you going to be fucking piss......

But remember the client is always right and regardless of your situation ya gotta take care of them or the enemy will and it will reflect badly on ya at first.

I am a true believer in being sincere and apologetic upfront. Then I would ask if they would consider referring someone else to me since I am not need. And I would also ask if an opportunity comes again that I would be consider. I hate it when I didnt forsee this being a problem but I totally drop the ball. But I learn a good lesson and it has humble me in the process. That the client is your bread and butter, and if you dont cater to them, someone else will. Turnaround time is a must in any business.

Shyt happens but it pointless in being angry at the client because they are always right and your shytiutation isnt their problem.

Anyway I gotta hustle and my goal for next week is to get at least 4 clients by next Saturday.

My company by the way is focusing on several projects at the moment that is covering different markets.

- Publicist
- Internet Marketing
- Internet Commerce
- Computer Consulting

3 of the different operations are service oriented
and 1 is retail oriented.....

I will be revealing the name of the business once the trademark process is completed.

Dawg!
I have been reading ya shit! We need to talk! I need some one in your part of the world. Hit me up on pm if ya will! "LICK"

well finally got the license in my hand........

now the ball is about to roll......

1) Getting additional funding from private investors
2) obtaining federal grants due to my disability
3) Meeting with lawyer for incorporation process
4) Waiting on 5 Graphic Artist to design my logo it was part of a class project.. winner get a $100 check and must sign a release form
5) Secure 5 clients by month end. I gotta be realistic here.
6) Securing a CPA for end of the year. Gotta do it now cuz it be a nightmare later if I wait to the last minute.
7) Securing a business phone line.
8) I am looking into getting a business address maildrop.. since I am not ready to move into an actual office.
9) damn i need an assistant lol..... might work out something with a Spelman junior/senior who is specializing in Business/Marketing. Hey I gotta give back to the young folks!

I'm already started my business and it's registered under an LLC. My problem is locating real investors. I tried the bank route but banks don't like lending/loaning money to entertainment companies. Even if you have a 5 year business plan (which I have)...it's not enough without a personal guaranty that has good to great credit. My credit is shot because of identity theft. On top of that I'm located in New Jersey. Do you have any information or advise ono how to obtain real investors?

just found this...good ground work

I went against the grain..established profit flow first, now in the process of logo..I am only word of mouth, so the only way new clients find out about me is from existing and on the same level.
