Amazon delivery driver gets slapped for pepper spraying a dog for no reason

He can't even report it or call the police, because he was 100% in the wrong

I know it looks like overkill, but from an insurance agent's standpoint that was a potential lawsuit for the owner. It doesn't take much at all and people don't realize your dog doesn't even have to touch a person.. We've paid out for a dog just scaring somebody and they trip and injure themselves etc. Could be a Chihuahua(which is more common than people think) it doesn't matter. Your dog not looking big and scary means nothing. Amazon guy would probably be fine if he was reported to the police or sued by the homeowners. Remember, your dog is YOUR dog not anybody else. I don't have time to figure out if he's friendly or not. Just my insurance opinion.

As a former paper boy, I know where you're coming from. That dog looked friendly, but you don't know what that person has experienced with dogs. The dog's owner is in the wrong for putting his hands on that driver. I know a few dog owners and have dog-sat a few times, so I get how people feel about their dogs. When I was delivering papers, I had to deal with many dogs, but only one dog actually tried to bite me, and it was a Chihuahua. It actually nipped at my heels before her owner caught up to her. It was no big deal, and that couple was one of my best customers.

I'm siding with the amazon driver. If a dog is approaching you and it's growling (according to him), you don't have to time to figure out if it's friendly or not. It's more than a reasonable assumption to make or feel that the dog was a threat if the dog was approaching in an aggressive manner (especially if your not used to being around dogs and don't know how to read or interpret dog behaviour). You really don't have time to figure out the history and how the dog was raised to be around strangers in that moment. The responsibility should be on the owner of the dog for this outcome.
