The second-largest school district in the country has been closed due to an unspecified threat, police say.
A representative with the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a "threat" led Los Angeles Unified School District schools to be closed on Tuesday, but didn't elaborate.
ABC 7 reports that the threat's credibility is unconfirmed.
The Los Angeles Times reports that a bomb threat was called in to an unidentified school board member.
Ramon Cortines, the district superintendent, said an electronic “message” was sent making a threat to “students at many schools” and that many schools will be searched today.
“This is a rare threat," Cortines said. "It’s due to circumstances in neighboring San Bernardino … I as superintendent am not gonna take the chance with the life of a student."
He added that the district was “telling people to go home” and would provide buses to take home students who were already at school.
