Alexandra Shipp Says It's Time For A Standalone Storm Film

storm1.jpg

Alexandra Shipp spoke withThe Hollywood Reporterahead of accepting her Max Mara Face of the Future Award during the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards ceremony. TheX-Men: Dark PhoenixandLove, Simonstar said she's ready for a Storm standalone film.

While there haven't been any talks about a Storm standalone, Shipp said, "...I am hoping we will get around to it. It is definitely time for these Storm fans to get the movie they have been dying for."

She said that if a Storm film ever gets made, she wants it to be one of empowerment.

"There are so many different storylines that we could take on when it comes to Storm--whether she is losing her powers or going back to Africa. I just want there to be a message of 'this woman doesn't need a man.' Just one more movie where a woman doesn't need a man, really."

Storm fans definitely want a Storm standalone, but they'd probably want the film directly under the jurisdiction of Marvel, seeing how the studio was able to reclaim Spider-Man and do right by the character. Seeing how theX-Men films under 20th Century Fox have been hit or miss when it comes to showcasing a crowd-pleasing Storm, fans who want a Storm film want the character to be the type of weather goddess they know and love from the comic books, not the kind that has been watered down for the movies. Also, if theDark Phoenix image ofStorm holding an umbrella in the raindoesn't paint the picture of hownot to make a Storm movie, then nothing will.

The Disney-Fox merger is still up in the airnow that Comcast has thrown their hat in the ring, but if Disney does secure its hold on Fox's Marvel rights, then perhaps fans could hope to see a Storm film in the future. If Shipp could still have the role under new management is another question entirely.

Hell yea Storm should get a stand alone!

But is you doing this for a paycheck? Cause...you wasn't even referred to by name in the movie you was "Storm" in...we ain't forget that.

If they go 'young' Storm...I say give girl another chance. But the writers gotta come good. If you wanted someone REGAL, Aunty Angie is taken.

Who are these fans clamoring for a Storm movie? I don't know of any.

Plus, now it will be virtually impossible to do any superhero movie about Afrika without comparisons to BP. Undoubtibly negative.

Alexandra Shipp? Seriously? She's overreaching thinking she can carry a movie. She barely registered in Xmen or Compton.

Aaliyah I don't count because she was just trying to imitate (with so-so results) a real person.

That movie would be epic and NEEDS to be done and would fit in perfect with Disney need for more female lead characters, captain marvel first and storm should be next.

But we need a new Storm

Also she NEEDS to meet a young t'challa.

Hmm...

I have no idea who could be this new Storm...but I'm not opposed to her meeting T'challa. I'd really like a Erykah Badu "Next Lifetime" feel...I really want to see her story...cause right now I feel like Nakia and T'challa is solid.

Alexandra Shipp Continues To Combat Storm Controversy : 'You're Not Going To Tell Me That My Skin Color Doesn't Match A Crayola From 1970'

Alexandra Shipp continues to battle critics about her portrayal of Storm in the X-Men: Apocalypse and the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Like always, the battle revolves around the issue of colorism.

CmfINylWEAQA1BY.jpg

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shipp spoke to Glamour about the backlash, saying, "(I tweeted back) at people who criticized me for not having dark enough skin for my role in X-Men because we're not going to have this conversation about a cartoon character. You're not going to tell me that my skin color doesn't match a Crayola from 1970. Growing up, when I was reading the comics, I pictured her looking like me. For any black girl, for there to be a black superhero, we picture them looking like us."

"When I auditioned for the role, I wasn't like, 'Oh man, I'm not dark enough.' I was like, 'Finally, this is my moment," she said. "I'm not playing Harriet Tubman with a prosthetic nose and darkening my skin tone. I would never do that."

Her statement about Harriet Tubman does hit on the complexities of colorism within black roles, as shown when Zoe Saldana starred in Nina as musician Nina Simone, who was several shades darker than Saldana. For the role, Saldana darkened her skin and put on a fake nose, making her look more like a special effects character than Simone, who was a beautiful woman.

To bring the conversation back to Storm in particular, the character has always been darker than someone of Shipp's complexion. This isn't said to negate Shipp's feelings about the character or how the character has inspired her. But the point that somehow Shipp seemed to miss, even when bringing up the Harriet Tubman example, is that colorism in Hollywood is real. She might not want to be a part of it, but her skin tone is used as part of a machine meant to keep less Eurocentric faces and body types suppressed. As William Evans wrote for Black Nerd Problems during the X-Men: Apocalypse hype, colorism in Hollywood is "why Lupita 's rise to fame was constantly met with, 'I don't get it, I don't see why people think she's beautiful.' Or the New York Times calling Viola Davis 'less classically beautiful.' Or why there are about 17 things wrong with Zoe Saldana being cast as Nina Simone."

Evans, who also wrote how Storm's "dark complexion has...become a beacon and symbol for women with darker skin for decades," also wrote that even if the role of Storm is a dream come true for Shipp and hits at a point of racial pride for her, "that empathy doesn't really do much to alleviate the consistent knocking in the back of Black Women's skulls that have been passed over because they were too dark. To simply dismiss this as a non-starter of an issue is really just another level of 'I don't see color,' but instead it's 'I don't see the difference between one black person to another.'"

What it boils down to is this: even though black women across the board get the short end of the stick in Hollywood, darker black women get even less opportunities than lighter-skinned actresses. Storm is a lightning rod not just because of her abilities, but because of the role she plays in many black women's lives. It's no surprise that any black woman, when given the opportunity, would want to play Storm. But it's always important to consider the game Hollywood plays when it comes to who they deem more desirable. At the end of the day, Hollywood still sees someone like Shipp as a more desirable option than someone like Nyong'o, Davis, and others. Keep in mind: Black Panther is a rarity in superhero films not just because it's protagonist is black, but for also showing dark-skinned black women in multifaceted roles, something Hollywood doesn't usually do.

Why not, Marvel convinced everyone that Capt Marvel is important, they should be able to get a Storm movie off the ground

1. Yes Storm does deserve a standalone movie.
2. I ain't see shit from this girl in Age of Apocalypse to say that she should be the one in the role.
3. This shouldn't even be discussed until the Marvel/Fox deal goes through and we can get her and T'Challa on screen together.
And 4, damn there is a lot of sexy in this post.

Ain't happening.
More importantly: It ain't happening with her...
She SUCKS as Storm... :smh:
Storm should be:
- Tall.
- Beautiful.
- Regal.
- Darker than a brown paper bag.
Examples I'd like to see:

The original Storm was modeled after Iman.
Start there.
Most Hollyweird actresses that are "black" are high yellow. They should just start over instead of using old broads like Gabbie Union. She's too short anyway. Shipp was too short, too. As was Halle.

Ummm,
Sorry to disagree with you, bro.
But Storm was NOT modeled after Iman.
Storm made her comic book debut in 1975, 1 whole full year before Iman made hers in Vogue in 1976.

And if I'm not mistaken, she was originally gonna be a "he" (and more catlike in appearance) before Dave Cockrum changed her gender and power set...:eek2:

Yeah this girl wasn't bad man people just mad at her because of the Aaliyah movie. Wasn't her fault that movie was shitty. I'd prefer them going older Storm route if they do decide to do one but this chic can handle it.

They have to cast some one that can act and can fit in easily with the Black Panther cast. Alexandra dosn't fit. IMO again Naomie would be a perfect pick.

Some times you have to say fuck the comics and a go with the best actress/actor available.

Zazie Beetz did a great job playing Domino. And she looks nothing like the comic book character.

A movie that doesn't need a man...

Do these feminists realize it took a man for them to exist

No lies spoken with regard that it takes a man and woman to create a being. I hear you.

I also respectfully challenge back at you by saying that your statement sounds a lot like the argument that there can’t be a Black movie without a white cast member.

Even if a movie was created for women, about women and had little or nothing to do with men doesn’t in of itself mean the movie will be good, bad or inbetween.

agreed

but to be fair..

although Domino is basically traditionally "white"?

She could could EASILY be mixed or Asian or whatever..

that aint a REAL stretch

(although these fanboys were STILL pissed)

Storm is a WHOLE different thing...

your 100% right

but I understand @MistaPhantastic OVERALL point...

while not INSPIRED by her...

later versions were CLEARLY Iman-like.

and as of NOW and pretty much for almost 2 decades?

That is CLEARLY considered the standard

with some acting lessons?

I got no real issue with this.
I was actually joking.. but imo I think they need to find an actress the same way they did for wonder woman... Black female athletic body about 5’10 I was thinking Rihanna but she’s only 5’8

I know but you REALLY doubt that with lessons a trainer voice coach and Coogler..

Bey couldn't ACTUALLY pull that sh*t off?

she is a victim for the film's poor casting from the jump.

the 1st flick fucked up not casting Angela Basset at the time. She would've been the perfect storm (BP film pretty much confirmed it). Instead they went Halle who was the biggest black actress. In the reboot they doubled down on the error.

physical appearance doesn't have to be the end all be all but when you do a forgettable job and resemble the character it's hard to make the case she deserves a stand a lone.

as someone mentioned no one talks about race anymore with Domino from DP 2 or Heimdall from Thor because those actors killed playing those roles
