It's the end of an era. AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is officially shutting down on December 15th, Oath announced this morning. AIM started out as the built-in chat application in America Online's desktop client, but it really took off after it was broken out as a separate application in 1997. The app, and its iconic messaging sound, were staples for anyone who spent too much time on the web in the '90s and early '00s. Really though, the writing was on the wall for AIM since AOL laid off most of the division in 2012. AIM also started cutting off third-party access earlier this year, which was a big sign the service was on its way out.

Oath -- the new Verizon company that includes AOL, Yahoo, and yes, Engadget -- isn't saying what, exactly, will be replacing AIM. For now, though, Yahoo Messenger seems like the best possibility.

"AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed," said Oath VP of communications Michael Albers. "We are more excited than ever to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world."

Dam I never did that but I used to chat my ass off with my friends on AIM in college. Would put a status message up that I was gone to class and etc and where eI would be that night. I used to trade Booty Talk files on there with other BGOL members back in the day.

Rn365 those were the good old days

I think AIM and Yahoo Messenger were how I found this Board.

I remember starting on IRC and then going to AIM once THE PARK and the greatest Chatroom that no one talks about "The WB" died out.

Man I go so much pussy from The Park and then Private chat on IRC and AIM combo. That shit was the worlds first Perfect Combo.

ICQ, AIM, YM, Sprint Canada, You've Got Mail, Napster, Bearshare, Kazaa, dial-up, 30 second .MPEG preview clips taking 12 minutes to buffer.

Current generation on their Ipads don't know shit about all this.

Nobody and I'm telling you... NO BODY... can understand how earth shattering Napster was for a Dial-up kid.

Also none of these kids understand the Jealously that can form in a mans heart when you found out that your boy got DSL installed in his house and could download 5 songs in 45 minutes.

Got a phone call from Shaw Cable back in the day. Used to leave file trading on for days at a time even when not home (primarily Kazaa). "You've downloaded 120GB and uploaded 82GB. The limit is only 4 - 6 GB downloading, and 2GB uploading a month ... do you want any suggestions on how to lower your numbers? If not ... we might have to charge extra billing ..."

Played dumb ... didn't know how that happened. Apologized.

Happened because of Booty Talk, Sugarwalls, UFC, Pride MMA from Japan, and music.

Man, that was the shit back when I was finishing up high school and in college.

Met chicks on Black Planet/College Club and various other forums, get their AIM screen name and chop it up. Fucked a lot of bitches, did a couple "drive outs" lol cause I ain't have cash for airfare and met up with chicks who were distant but in reasonable driving distance. Shit, even got in touch with a lot of bad bitches I hadn't seen on campus due to AIM. Talked shit with my homies...man, a lot of great memories from back in the day lol. Like how today when kids meet they ask for each others social media accounts, we used to ask for the AIM screen name lol

Before the social media and phones with cameras and shit on them.

Nigga! Man I remember being on slow ass dial up at home, and when I got to college, my moms gave me the family PC (she bought a new one) and when they fucking hooked me up to that T1 connection! I ain't really know shit about computers and networks when I first got to school, and when I saw those 50 minute downloads for a single song cut down to fucking 2 minutes, I was like !

Downloading and selling entire CD's to people on campus man...

I was mad as fuck when I had to come home for the summer cause Moms refused to get DSL or Cable.

Nigga I was just about to follow up my post about the glory of the T1. This was me all day. I remember getting my first 1gb computer from a school auction for $100 bucks. Nigga... I was king of the world. That’s when I first started downloading pics and vids from BGOL. I went from Downloading music to running a semi- successfully porn and music site off of the schools FTP server for 2 years. “Da Devils Playground”.... man that was my baby. I miss that website. I had a forum and everything. But my stupid ass didn’t pull it off the server when I graduated. Man I still remember the moment that shit hit 25k views. Shit was vanglorious
