A rare Rolex watch that was owned by the late movie star Paul Newman has sold for almost $17.8m (£13.5m), making it the most expensive watch ever auctioned.

Newman, who won an Oscar for his performance in the 1986 film The Colour of Money, wore the watch every day for 15 years.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, made of stainless steel and on sale between 1963 and 1970, became known as the “Paul Newman watch”.

It had been expected to sell for £1m but there was far more interest than expected. More than 700 people crammed into the auction room, while others joined by phone from 43 countries.

The Rolex was eventually sold to an anonymous phone bidder for $17,752,500.

The watch had been given to Newman by his wife, Joanne Woodward, in 1968. She bought it from a Tiffany & Co store in New York and had it engraved with the message “Drive carefully”, in light of her husband’s fledgling motor racing career.

In 1984 Newman gave the watch to his daughter’s then boyfriend, James Cox, who did not own a watch, saying it “keeps good time”.

After Cox and Newman’s daughter Nell split up they remained on good terms, and they jointly put the watch up for auction. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Nell Newman Foundation and the Newman’s Own Foundation.

Paul Boutros, the head of watches at Phillips auctioneers in New York, said it had been a tremendous honour to handle the sale. “The significance of this watch cannot be overstated,” he said.

Newman died in 2008, aged 83.

Dude is an American icon. He is what bob marley is toward jamaicans . I know bgol accountants cannot fathom such purchases. We know 17.8 million could be used to cure african diseases blah Blah blah
I’m not an accountant and I have my own Rolexes. So spare me the lecture. My statement was why would they pay for something they can hardly resell at a gain. I don’t care that much for a dead icon.

They can sell for a profit - my guess if it was Steve McQueen the price would be even higher

Classic Daytona, Not a suprise, One of the most accurate watches in the world and also uses the Zeith Movement,

Old Rolex Daytona with the Zeith Movement fetches very high value.
Got to love Rolex, I remember when i first bought my Rolex Submariner for $4000 in 2005, Sold it last year for $7,800.

I also owned some Breitlings but it was the worst mistake ever, Breitling loses value now because they make too many different watches. They need to be more like Rolex or Patek Philippe.

U don't care that much for Paul Newman but that high price tag at auction says its clearly value. Im glad bgol ain't the end all be all of what's valuable

LOL, I knew that I would piss your type off with my references to my Rolexes.

Also, thanks for your confidence in my intellect. I'm just not small minded enough to think that making a gain is buying for 17 and selling for 20. The cost of insuring that watch is $750k a year. There is also the 10%+ opportunity cost of money on the $17m, the current buyers auction premium and future sales commission, so they have to be able to sell that watch for at least $28m in the future. Good luck with that.

"Billionaire?...I could lose the Billions you claim to have and not even know they were gone !!!!"

Zenith movement, correct?

My wife bought a zenith watch as a wedding gift. Came back to NYC saw that it was $10k.
