I wouldn't put lionel richie on that list...dude was the clear superstar of the commodores and owned large parts of the late 70s and early to mid 80s...by the 90s he was approaching 50 and how long could that popular run last?

I want to say it was a mental thing, based on stuff I read and heard. Basically, he was on the verge of drifting into mediocrity, and he wasn't exactly on point with his standup game (I don't think he was ever a super solid standup performer, just a weird and quirky one in a time when that would do it for you). So when he started getting heckled, possibly rightfully so, he had no comebacks or anything and went with the first crazy thing that popped into his head.

Mind you, I am not for one second excusing that outburst, because it broke both of my standing rules of comedy: it was offensive and it wasn't funny. I can sometimes forgive the former if the latter is true. But there's no world where shouting the N-word was going to work out for him.

Dave Chappelle could have milked a few more years out of Chappelle Show too. Steve and Paul might not have faced the same moral dilemma that Dave did, but all three were frustrated with the creative direction of their careers and finally got to a point where their dissatisfaction was no longer worth the money anymore.

He was never a stand up. He picked up a role that he played so well, that you couldn't think of him as anybody but Kramer. Tried to get into stand up and he sucked trying to do that clumsy stumbling Kramer-like routine. He was high on coke that night and was getting heckled then boom the lid came off.


Yo, y'all remember when he came on Letterman and Seinfeld was on that night too. Dude is so Kramer-ish the audience started laughing while he was trying to apologize. Seinfeld was on the couch like, " it's not supposed to be funny."
