Monday saw the launch of the new non-profit political organization, No Labels, in New York.

The group purports to represent the center, but has already taken a battering of criticism, similar to the jabs aimed at comedian Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity, namely that, as Stephen Colbert said of the rally, “It’s hard to be extremely moderate. [It's] like wearing an extra medium.”

The non-partisan initiative with the slogan, "Not Left. Not Right. Forward", is seeking to fill what the American people regularly tell pollsters is the vital center: a non-ideological space where the commitment is to getting things done. And its speakers—who ranged from Republican moderates like ex-Virginia Rep. Tom Davis to liberal Democrats like New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand—sang the praises of cooperation and compromise.

No Labels also has music on its side. The rapper Akon has penned an anthem of bipartisanship for the group, which includes such profound lyrics as:

"See a man with a blue tie.

See a man with a red tie.

So how about we tie ourselves together and get it done".

Akon was slated to attend the Monday No Labels launch at Columbia University (alongside New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Joe Lieberman and MSNBC's Joe Scarborough) but did not show.

No Labels is trying to make Akon's track go viral, asking the public to download it and to create accompanying music videos. The groups asks that videos be uploaded to YouTube or the group's Facebook page, thus spreading the message of neutral tie-wearing.

Hmmmm.

Whites are in charge.

Guess who provides the entertainment?

Yeah, things really are different with this group.

Politicians seem to understand that most Americans are too apathetic, ignorant and to selfish to care about how money is wasted. Too many people feel like "the government" has an endless supply of money to just dole out and pay for everything. This is a problem when nearly half the people pay no taxes. If people have no skin in the game, it's easy for them to ignore the waste, fraud and abuse in the system.

Take for instance this crap I ran across today!!!
This loser is blasting Obama's plan, I'm like yea I disagree as well then he was confronted with earmarks he tried to sneak into the bill. Then he tried to justify it. Pass the bill as is no earmarks.

(R) Cornyn should be recalled today!!!

Also, think about it. A bill was needed to to extend unemployment benefits and leave the Bush tax cuts at the rate they have been for almost a decade.

In almost a two week period over 1500 pages appeared out of no where!!! You can't tell me that they all read it. Yet we are stuck with the bill.

Establishment republicans being called out.

Fox’s Megyn Kelly was not happy to hear that many Republicans have stuffed the omnibus spending bill full of earmarks. On her show Wednesday, she went after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Sen. Saxby Chmbliss (R-GA) for their earmarks. She also vowed to name more names on “both sides of the aisle.”

Kelly’s mini-rant starts at about 2:14 below. Fox reporter Jim Angle, however, begins the clip with a good overview of the bill and the controversy, including revealing how $18 million in pork is connected to two dead congressman:

It's a bullshit front group.

Why are liberals so afraid of being labeled?

I'm quite happy with my label of being a black conservative...

The left has some insecurity problems...

the left vs. right argument is phony from the jump!

It's just been exposed that Bernanke used taxpayer dollars to bail out banks in other countries. The left voted with Bush on more than 1 occasion

It's also been exposed that Bernanke created $600 billion "out of thin air" to give to his buddies on Wall Street (QE2). With no congressional vote whatsoever.

When it comes to the banks & civil liberties, don't expect Congress to act on behalf of "the people". Just bein real!

Yup. They reinvent themselves whenever people get a taste of what they were about. 100 yrs ago they (including some republicans like Teddy Roosevelt) were called progressives, then liberals, then just democrats, then progressives again. Suddenly after election day its no labels, but I'm sure they'll have no problem labeling every1 else.

Bullshit! Absolutely no convictions. This is what two generations of failure to teach history and civics in secondary school leads too. And the colleges and universities are doing a terrible job also.

We agree on something!

I'm quite happy with my label of being a black conservative...

Yea right. Because being labeled a conservative has no definition other than hypocrisy.

BTW, I'm a proud liberal!

Liberals are proven right every time in the long run!

More like politicians elected to make tough decisions who are too milque-toast and afraid to stand for anything-just like the Independents they claim to represent! They are detestable!BTW:I am a PROUD Progressive!

Agreed but it's not a "liberal" front group but conservative Dems and some more moderate Republicans and not-entirely-crazy conservative Republicans.

Just so that you'll know, this post really has NOTHING to do with the 'No Labels' group. But I do like what the concept implies -- getting things done, regardless of affiliation. As you also know (we've talked about this back and forth) I just don't believe that labels mean much. People have a myriad of thoughts and ideas, and I just don't see how you can meaningfully pigeon hole them into static catch-all categories.

Now, if one can pigeon-hole oneself into such simplicity, well, who am I to complain?

This useless news cycle so called information was on the so called cable news networks for a day or two. Upgrade was correct, the covservadems got there asses whooped in the midterms now they are looking for any opportunity to claim legitimacy. The liberal/progressive Democrats will have more say in the upcoming Congress than the Blue Dog conservative Democrats, which I think is great. Since it will actually expose the hard right/corporatist republicans for what they are, pawns for big business. As I have been quoting Harry S. Truman from day one on this forum, the people will choose a real republican over an almost republican.

Running away from labels means you have nothing you will stand for!

No Labels enters new era by shedding ‘centrist’ image

No Labels enters new era by shedding ‘centrist’ image
By Beth Fouhy | The Ticket – 23 mins ago

"Patronizing." "The Kumbaya Caucus." "The most boring political movement of all time."

And those were some of the kinder jabs lobbed at “No Labels,” an organization formed in 2010 by a handful of well-connected but disenchanted political activists to encourage problem solving over ideological gridlock. Such earnestness seemed laudable but a tad incongruous in an era where the passions of the Tea Party and Occupy movements dominated the political conversation.

Despite a splashy New York launch, No Labels lacked a clear agenda and grassroots support and was largely dismissed as irrelevant. But with new leadership and a sharper focus, the group, which is redeploying with another New York conference on Monday, has shed some of its early idealism in favor of a more pragmatic acceptance of the partisanship that has divided the country and embroiled Washington in recent years.

"We started off thinking there was a broad group in the middle, but quickly realized that wasn’t productive. People have very different notions of what the middle is,” said Mark McKinnon, a longtime adviser to former President George W. Bush and a No Labels founder. “So we grew beyond that, and now have strong conservative and strong liberal partisans who want to participate.”

That perspective is shared by the group's new co-chairs -- West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin and former Republican Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who gave their first joint interview to Yahoo News since taking their new roles.

"It’s not about centrism, it’s about a new attitude toward the realities we face. It’s about finding Democrats and Republicans who will check their egos at the door,” said Huntsman, whose decidedly centrist run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination flamed out early in the primary process.

Huntsman and Manchin will be among the marquee speakers at “A Meeting to Make America Work!” the group’s conference in New York on Monday. Others include newly elected Maine Independent Sen. Angus King; Newark, New Jersey Mayor and Democratic Senate candidate Cory Booker; and Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller, who will address the group by video. Former President Bill Clinton and Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, will send taped messages.

Huntsman and Manchin told Yahoo News they envision a more aggressive agenda for No Labels, like improving the group’s small donor fundraising, using digital tools to broaden its grassroots operations and recruiting more lawmakers to team up with with the organization and embrace its goals.

To that end, No Labels has helped launch a congressional “Problem Solvers’ Group” -- 12 Republican lawmakers, 13 Democrats -- who have begun holding meetings and working on some reform measures. Several members of the group are attending the New York conference.

Manchin, who served as his state’s governor for five years before winning a Senate seat in 2010, said the group may also begin a broader effort to endorse and contributed to candidates after getting involved in just a few races in 2012. He also said he expected to see elected officials to seek and proudly display the No Labels moniker.

“If you carry the No Labels brand, that says something – it means you’re bragging about problem solving, not just bragging about yourself,” Manchin said. “I think you’ll see people climbing aboard and wanting to become part of this.”

At least some have already done so, including Virginia Republican Rep. Scott Rigell and Oregon Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader. Both are members of the House Problem Solvers’ Group and – by their own telling – strongly partisan.

“It would be a mistake to characterize this as a centrist group. That is pigeonholing us in a way that isn’t accurate,” Rigell told Yahoo News.

Added Schrader, “I don’t consider Scott a centrist, he’s a pretty conservative Republican. But I consider him a guy who’s listening.”

Both lawmakers acknowledged that the Problem Solvers’ group wasn’t ready to bridge the partisan divide over looming crises like the coming battle over raising the nation’s debt ceiling, not to mention longer-term challenges like the solvency of Medicare and Social Security.

But they’ve coalesced around issues pertaining to the way Congress functions, like “No Budget, No Pay” legislation pushed by No Labels that would bar lawmakers from receiving a salary without passing a federal budget.

Mostly, the members of the group are working on getting to know and trust each other, Rigell and Schrader said.

“It’s critical that we meet, break bread together, have a meal together. But that’s not encouraged in Washington,” Rigell said. “You’re supposed to have a tribal mindset – an allegiance to your team, your party.”
