Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says the NBA should raise its minimum age for entry into the league to 21.

The NBA’s career scoring leader and center on the Los Angeles Lakers’ 1980s “Showtime” teams said Wednesday there’s a disturbing sense of entitlement among many of today’s young pros.

“They get precocious kids from high school who think they’re rock stars— ‘Where’s my $30 million?’ ” said Abdul-Jabbar, who was in Omaha to speak at the B’nai B’rith sports banquet. “The attitudes have changed, and the game has suffered because of that, and it has certainly hurt the college game.”

The 63-year-old Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson led the Lakers to five NBA titles in the 1980s. Before Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989, he set the NBA record for career points (38,387), MVP selections (six) and All-Star selections (19).

He now is a special assistant to the Lakers and a best-selling author.

Abdul-Jabbar met students Wednesday at Boys Town, the nationally acclaimed home for troubled youth. He told them about his time at UCLA, where he played on three national championship teams for John Wooden and graduated in four years with degrees in English and history.

“Coach John Wooden encouraged me to be more than just a jock,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He said if I let my intellectual life suffer because I was so into being an athlete that I would be less than I could be. I would tell all students to pursue your dreams but don’t let your education suffer.”

The NBA in 2005 changed its entry age to 19. Players who previously might have jumped from high school to the NBA now end up playing one year of college ball before declaring for the draft.

Those players are still too young, Abdul-Jabbar said, and many deprive themselves of the emotional and physical maturity necessary to meet on- and off-the-court challenges.

“When I played, the players had to go to college and earn their way onto the court, meaning that there were upperclassmen ahead of them,” he said. “Players who had to go through that and had to go to class, when they got to be professional athletes, they were a lot better qualified.”

Abdul-Jabbar said if college weren’t the right place for a player, the player should, as an alternative, be required to play in a minor league or developmental league.

Kevin Garnett(notes), Kobe Bryant(notes) and LeBron James became stars right out of high school. The day after James all but disappeared in Cleveland’s playoff loss to Boston, Abdul-Jabbar said even “King James” would have benefited from college.

“He would have come into the professional ranks very polished, given his innate gifts,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “Having to go through a college system would have made him a total gem as soon as he stepped out of the college ranks.”

Abdul-Jabbar commented on other topics:

— He said his role as co-pilot “Roger Murdock” in the 1980 comedy movie “Airplane” changed his life.

“I think everybody in the airline industry is required to watch it,” he said. “When I get on planes, every so often the stewardess or the pilot will come out and ask me, ‘Do you want to fly the plane?’ “

During a flight in Europe, a pilot escorted him from his seat to the cockpit for takeoff.

“I get a good laugh from it,” he said. “It’s been over 25 years since I made that movie and people still watch it all the time. I guess it’s a classic.”

— He said he has known about Boys Town and its founder, the Rev. Edward Flanagan, since he attended Catholic school in an Irish neighborhood in New York City. “The Irish were very proud of him and what he had achieved. It’s really neat for me to come out here and see it in reality and seeing they’re doing such fine work. That is so necessary. People have to care about our youth. They are our most precious resources. If we don’t care, what’s going to happen.”

— He said his greatest athletic achievement was playing on the Lakers team that beat Boston for the NBA title in 1985.

“But seeing my kids graduate from college and knowing they have a firm basis in life, that is a lot more important to me, personally,” he said.

— He said 6-11 center Nate Thurmond, who played for Golden State, Chicago and Cleveland, was his toughest matchup.

“A lot of guys beat on me and said they played good defense. Nate actually used skill and knowledge of the game to play against me and make my evenings more difficult when I had to play him,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He was everything a professional center should be.”

— He said the “Showtime” Lakers would fare well in the current NBA.

“We had guys on the bench who were Hall-of-Famers,” he said. “That doesn’t happen now because there is such a dispersal of talent. We would do very well in this present climate.”

his idea has merit but it will never fly. there has to be a compromise.
I dont think anyone disagrees there is a problem with young kids becoming instant donald trumps
what if instead the millions you earn has to stay in a savings account with interest until you are 21:dunno:
not perfect idea but they will never raise the minimum age for entry to the league to 21. have to compromise somewhere
or just leave it the way it is and make everyone under the age of 21 get mandatory wealth counseling or some shit two or three times a year until they are 21

I disagree. Why should I have a problem with how old another man is when he makes a lot of money? He earned it, it wasn't given to him. He got on a basketball court and played well enough that some GM took a risk and paid him a ton of money. Good for that young man/woman.

And they shouldn't. At 19, you're a grown man and in 2010, there are too many examples of people, athletes and others, fucking up their money for a person to fall into the trap.
What's ironic is this discussion about player finances when Kareem went to college and still got robbed. That's why he played so long, he was fucked up, financially and had to.

Why doesn't this come up in other sports? How many hockey players failed? Baseball? Golf? Tennis? .............oh, yea, I know why.

Great posts.

Sometimes old people have a lot of wisdom to share...other times (like this one), they just need to SHUT THE FUCK UP!

KAJ is my fav player but I disagree with pretty much everything here

Instead of age restrictions on the NBA we need age restrictions on "STRANGERS WITH CANDY" aka agents, college staff and other leeches corrupting these kids (and parents) at 12-13 years old

We also need to stop making the NCAA the NBA Jr. These cats need to get a stipend and an education not a $500k check and a dose of "campus life" aka drugs and slutz

He definitely didn't address the elephant in the room.but then again I don't know if he was answering a specific question or proselytizing :dunno:

I like this.. Experience from life and from books is what everyone needs. It makes you a better person. 21 sould be the entry for the NBA. amoung with all Pro sports. Makes for a path and for everyone to aim for higher education.

If you are old enough to vote and fight in a war, then you should be old enough to earn a living in the profession of your choice. No one puts a gun to these owner's heads and forces them to bring in young athletes...they choose to. They take the risk, and benefit from the reward (if there is one).

I'm a little skeptical, of older players, opining on the young athletes of this generation, and how much money they make. Not saying they are "haters", but who wouldn't take the opportunity to make $5 million at 19 years old? And because YOU didn't have that opportunity, why suggest that those other athletes shouldn't either?

You hear this far more often when it comes to the BLACK athlete than you do in other sports like tennis, golf, and hockey. Older white males (and some black ones obviously) HATE the fact that these athletes make the kind of money they do....but they can't turn away, because they enjoy the sport.

It is the primary reason why black athletes are so maligned on sports radio and television. It this whole..."I need to see that you appreciate the money that you receive for playing this sport...and because you do make that money, I need you to act they way that is acceptable to ME, and be clean-cut, non-demonstrative, articulate, and limit your tattoos...." attitude that comes largely from white males. There is a high degree of jealousy and resentment of the black athlete from white men, and the ESPNs of the world know this and CAPITALIZE on it. Because their audience is the over-30 white male (at least the ones that buy the products they sell on commercials).

Now I'm not saying that there are not black athletes out there that deserve negative treatment...especially when they do stupid shit, but these few, create a negative stereotype of ALL black athletes in the eyes of white america. If you let a gun go off in a club, that's stupid. If you keep getting arrested at strip clubs, that's stupid. If you spit in a woman's face at the club, that's stupid. But the media will have you believe that white athletes are just soooo clean cut and never use crack (Matt Jones), or do stupid shit at bars (Rothlisberger), or fuck bitches in the back of the restaurant (Pitino), or fuck underage girls at pool parties (Mark Chmura), etc. Those stories are quickly swept under the rug.

Why do you think MJ was so popular with white america? Do you recall at ANY time, MJ speaking out about ANY social issue that affected blacks in ANY way? NEVER. And white men appreciated it....greatly. They loved, and still love MJ for it. "Don't make me feel bad about myself, just play basketball and be clean cut and kiss white babies and hug and play with the little white boys in your commercials." THAT'S why they loved MJ. No disrespect to MJ, he knew this and was very well managed throughout his career, and he took advantage of this fact to maximize his earnings.

Tiger Woods was BELOVED by white america...(clean cut, articulate, never got in trouble, plenty of white friends around him, didn't even identify himself as "black"). They were even ok when he married a white woman....but when they found out he was banging all the white women these older white men fantasize about, they turned on him. He showed that stereotype of the "well-endowed" black man fucking my white women. And we ALL know white men HATE that shit. Hate it. And they made him pay. And will continue to. He disappointed them....he wasn't their "boy" anymore. He was tainted. How many married male athletes black or white cheat on their wives??? 60%? 70%? Come on. They act like they were soooo shocked that he fucked bitches. Really? Do you think they (white men) would have been so "shocked" and "appalled" if the women would have been black? Not nearly.

Young black athletes remind older white men of their own perceived deficiencies. Period. Plus they are rich, which doesn't help. So many white men try to marginalize the black athlete...paint them as "stupid", "ignorant", "uneducated", "need to stay in college", "uncontrollable", "bad influences"...etc. But Bobby, who is a tennis pro at 16, doesn't need school? Riiiiight.

Give me a break.

Yeah, I wrote it....this shit burns me up. I've been saying this shit for years. People need to wake up, and see that they are being USED.

agreed all these kids jumping from high school right to the league because they dominate a bunch of rich white kids is what is killing the NBA

I stopped caring what he said to say when he mentioned "the college game has suffered as a result". Fuck the college game, either pay these athlete students or let them be student athletes.

they are not being used give me a fucking break. if you think they are being used in college they are being used in the nba also. a professional player makes pennies compared to the money that the leagues and owners make. the nfl has an age limit and they put out a much better product than the nfl. the nba use to be a good product to watch but now all this one and done bullshit has ruined the league. It has almost become unbearable to watch now.

I'd be all for them staying in college if they were actually learning something but the system is a shamockery these days so it's hard to get behind Kareem 100%.

Looking at it from Kareem's perspective you have to consider that college sports wasn't the revenue machine then that it is now, so a coach could tell a player to get his education and the sentiment wasn't as duplicitous.

It would also be different if the athlete cared about having a back-up plan if this ball shit don't work out but they (and typically the people around them) don't really give a shit either.

Between greedy schools, greedy GM's, greedy agents, and a support system that usually sees the kid as a meal ticket, there's really no real winner so fuck it, get money!

Most leagues have programs for young players just coming into money like that, I guess the results are mixed. :dunno:

Like I mentioned in another thread, I knew this shit was a lost cause when Vince Carter got ripped for attending his graduation a few years back because it happened to be on the same morning that his team had a playoff game.

Kareem is right. Some of these guys are really immature. Le Bronze and Kobe would really have been better players learning the ropes in a top notch program for a couple of years. At least 2 years in the DL or overseas or in college.

I used to be against the age requirement being raised. I know for a lot of whites it's because of the thought of young brothas making a lot of money. For others, including myself, it's because these kats are coming into the game with a lack of fundamentals. These kats don't look like pros. The mid-range game barely exists and many can't even shoot freethrows.

They need to raise the age to at least 21 and have these kats develop more before they can come to the NBA. Also, they have too many euros in the league. They need to make other changes as well because the game is really suffering.

 that makes no sense at all

a lot of good players came out straight outta high school and i know a lot of you will say what about the kids that turned into bust that didn't go to college

i'll answer that question with another question what about the players that went to college and still ain't shit...:hmm: i think its a larger percentage...

simple if you can play ball you should be able to get on the court at 18

c/s all the above

TBH That's none of your business...there are a lot of people who that "kid" has to impress to get on the floor in the first place...

I put the kid first in this situation if the fans suffer or the owner suffers that is their problem ...one that they brought on themselves

The kid is just trying to live his dream like anyone else - no one is stopping child actors or singers from doing their thing with age restrictions....

Most players in today's NBA still have more than a 1 year of college ball and increasingly several years of international ball, so it's not a bunch of "youngsters" messing up the league. If a player doesn't have a good grasp on basketball fundamentals by the time he's 19, more than likely after at least 10 years of AAU and/or other organized ball, isn't going to get it in a college setting.

The difference being in the NBA, you get a check. At the end of your three year rookie deal, a player may be a flop but he's a flop with money to do something else. There is very little to make sure colleges actually graduate players. The schools get on tv, sell merchandise, sell seats and suites and the player can come out with nothing, not even a degree.

B Jennings proved a lot of people wrong.

What he is saying might sound good but the reality is, who is willing to give up money?

The 18 yr old freshman in college, a team offers him 4 mil, how many players will turn this down?
