A remote beach on the island of Ile-a-Vache, off of the Southern Coast of Haiti, ranked 57th on CNN’s World’s 100 best beaches report, which is another sign of Haiti’s growing tourism sector and a boost for a government initiative to turn the island into a major tourism destination.

Abaka Bay Beach is located on Ile-a-Vache (Cow Island), a small island whose submarine sand still lodges precious articles and remains of the warship of British Captain, Henry Morgan and other famous sea adventurers.

The beach, with very white sand and very clear water, is home to a resort, the Abaka Bay Resort, which offers rooms and very original beachside cabins.

The CNN report said "the island of Ile a Vache in Haiti punches above its weight in the beach class division -- the eight-by-two-mile island is home to Akaba Bay, boasting some of the best photo ops in the Caribbean. Quality and good value accommodation line the sands".

As a Highlight, CNN says "Abaka Bay Resort provides great views of the ocean, is one step from the beach and serves a mean conch dinner."

The Haitian government has broken ground on plans to build environmentally friendly infrastructure including an international airport and roads for small non polluting electric carts, as no cars will be allowed on the island, located at about 20 minutes from the Southern town of Les Cayes.

The Ile-à-Vache tourism plan, which will be developed over several years, will cost some $350 million, according to the Haitian Minister of Tourism, Stephanie B. Villedrouin.

Besides Haitian states funds that will be used for building basic infrastructure on the Island, investments opportunities are open to national and international private investors.

Ile-à-Vache is also surrounded by several other small islands with incredible sand, crystal-clear water and unique aquatic species, such as Lovers' Island, Caille-à-l'Eau, among others .

The island's submarine is reputed to be full of precious articles and remains from the wreck of a British warship Captained by a 17th-century privateer Henry Morgan, that was sent to defend Jamaica in 1669.

Another beach resort on the Island, Port Morgan hotel, was named after the famous British captain. Port-Morgan is also one of the great attractions on Ile-à-Vache, which is increasingly and rapidly becoming a major tourism destinations for tourists in Haiti and from around the world.

To be clear, the few times I went there, it was a very isolated island with only 2 resorts there, one belonging to a french man; Port-Morgan which I stayed at also and this one which was more like resort like since Port-Morgan did not have it's own beach.
There was not much in term of activities, this is not like a club med vibe, it was more of a getaway and relax atmosphere, there was no cars on the island which was a plus for me, but they had some interesting spots you could go visit either by walking or by boat.

Now that the Clintons discovered it (Yes those Clintons), the place is changing into a super luxury resorts with all the big names building their brand chain on it, they are building an airport so that you dont even have to go to the mainland.

I have mixed feelings about the whole development of the island but that's another topic.

Prices were in the 150 to 200+ per night including 3 meals, US currency of course.

Who owns the resort though?

It is owned, up to recently by a mixed couple Haitian woman and her European husband, now that there some major players snatching up every parcel of the place not sure who owns what.

There is already some serious investing being poured there but by american interests mostly and only a few if any by Haitians or Haitian-Americans.

By the Caribbean Journal staff

An all-inclusive resort is coming to Haiti.

In what could be a big boost for the country’s nascent tourism development, Colombia-based hotel and resort chain Decameron will be opening a resort in Haiti.

The company will take over management at the Club Indigo Resort on Haiti’s Cote des Arcadins, which it calls “one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean.”

The property will be rebranded as the Royal Club Decameron Indigo.

The 390-room property includes two adult pools and two children’s pools, a buffet restaurant, two a la carte restaurants and five bars, along with a spa.

Of the 390 rooms, 350 have sea views.

The property is slated to debut in December 2015, according to the company’s Web site. When that happens, it will become Haiti’s first all-inclusive resort in the modern era.

The Club Indigo property was actually the site of the former Club Med property, once Haiti’s most-famous all-inclusive. Now, decades later, this property is going all-inclusive again.

I've lived several lifetimes and unlike many of you I remember mine. I can remember slashing many white men's throats in that beach during the revolution. I cut a baby out a white woman's stomach on that very shore. Id sure love to revisit and reminisce. I may just cop a ticket.

Are you claiming to be one of the people who were part of the slave revolution in Haiti in a past life....
