He was unprepared in dealing with the police. Almost like they don't exist to serve and protect me from anything.
Police blasted some kid when they handcuffed or detained his mother in front of his house, the kid got upset. Arguing can turn into shots fired real quick with the police.
It seems they made up a reason to enter his house. As soon as he identified himself as the owner, they should have left, instead of badgering him. This story about a possible break in sound real funny, almost bordering on a setup. They knew who he was already, just playing stupid. Neighbors not wanting him in the neighborhood or some other reason.

BOSTON - Blogs exploded Wednesday with people eager to weigh in on issues of race, class and police harassment and talk radio made room for little else as the Boston region buzzed with discussions about Harvard's prominent African-American studies professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who was arrested after attempting to enter his own home.
President Barack Obama unexpectedly injected himself into the national debate during his Wednesday night news conference, saying the Cambridge, Mass., police department acted "stupidly" in the arrest of Gates Jr..
In response to a question, Obama shied away from suggesting that Gates' race was the contributing factor to his arrest but linked the event to disparate treatment of minorities by police. "But I think it's fair to say, No. 1, any of us would be pretty angry; No. 2, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home," said Obama, who called himself a friend of Gates.
"And No. 3, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped ... disproportionately," the president said. "That's just a fact."
Although Cambridge police already had dropped the charges, labeling the incident "regrettable and unfortunate," the case continues to reverberate.
"This is not dying down, and it's not going to," said Callie Crossley, a Boston TV and radio commentator.
It started last Thursday when Gates, returning after a 20-hour flight from China, was unable to open the front door to his house a block from Harvard Square. While his limo driver tried to help him, a woman called police to say that "two black males with backpacks" were trying to break in to the house. A confrontation ensued. Gates, 58, was led away in handcuffs. A police mug shot of one of the country's leading black intellectuals soon surfaced on the Internet.

However, he did not apologize for calling the Cambridge PD’s acting “stupidly,�� More..� and said he stuck by his original assessment, that ‘pulling Gates out of his home’ (which did not happen) was wrong. He said both parties (Sgt. Crowley & Prof. Gates) “over-reacted.”
How is it that Obama can apologize on behalf of America all over the world, but he cannot make a simple apology for playing the race card on national TV? PrezBO is the one who is “acting stupidly.”
And yes, we are supposed to believe this whole discussion occurred inside a 5-minute phone conversation. I call B.S. on that part, as well
Today Obama made a surprise visit to the daily White House press briefing to discuss a phone conversation he had this afternoon with Sgt. Crowley of the Cambridge Police Dept. He said they had a good discussion, even made the comment that the Sgt. and Obama have a beer sometime in the future at the White House.

this is how I see it & I know y'all aint gonna agree but it was a terrible "political" move because he went into that press conference trying to promote his 'health care' agenda but unfortunately all the news since then have been about his dialog with the Cambridge Police Dept. He allowed the press to take him "off his game"
And I'm not sayin' whether his statements were correct or not but a simple "no comment" would have sufficed

Obama doesn't make mistakes. Everything he does is calculated, thought out. Health care will pass and when it does it will seem like he compromised but in reality we will become a welfare nation. This little flareup was prolly a distraction to keep gullible minds off the big picture. This govt just gave 27 trillion to a handful of people.

That leaves me to infer that either the audience it caters to don't care about current events or their line up and shows suck. He'll Rush beats these guys with a frickin radio program daily. The police cannot force you to identify yourself or come out of your house without probable cause. (rules are however different for drivers and immigrants who are required to provide identification.) there is a limited definition of disorderly conduct to: fighting, threatening, violent or tumultous behavior I think I can shout in my house and ask questions as long as I do not touch or threaten the cop but if I did that in public then I can understand being arrested.

Great insight. I have a cousin who is a bit of a hot head. The police were called out due to a disturbance of the peace. The cops were cool about the situation because it was a party. So they simply asked everyone to clear the area or stay inside of the house where the party was taking place. Well my couisin wanted to stunt and refused to go inside of the house. He decided to get into a shouting match with the officer, my other cousins attempted to drag him indoors. It created such a stir outside that they eventually brought his arse downtown. As an aside his dad went to bail him out, but he couldn't because when the police ran his name they discovered his father had a bench warrant for some tickets, so they locked his dad up as well.

I don't think there is much argument that GW was not among the sharpest knives in the drawer.
You probably can't help it though, you're too tied to labels like conservative vs. liberals, and democrats vs. republicans. As I've told you, I don't give a shit about either. Both sides at times make good points and, at times, both are visionless. AND, I feel the same way about the Librarians. Guess I'm just not a groupie.
I prefer to try, at least, to analyze each side to see which is being realistic and rational. BUT, most importantly, I TRY to do that without ideological baggage, i.e., beginning the analysis looking through ideologically liberal, conservative, democrat, republican, or librarian lenses. Of course, I'm human; and I fail. But at least, I TRY.

Here is an excerpt of Crowley's statement which clearly demostrates the point:As I turned and faced the door, I could see an older black male standing in the foyer of *** Ware street. I made this observation through the glass paned front door. As I stood in plain view of this man, later identified as Gates, I asked if he would step onto the porch and speak with me. he replied "no I will not".
He then demanded to know who I was. I told him that I was "Sgt. Crowley from the Cambridge Police" and that I was "investigating a report of a break in [sic] progress" at the residence.
While I was making this statement, Gates opened the front door and exclaimied "why, because I'm a blackman in America?". I then asked gates if there was anyone else in the residence. While yellilng, he told me that it was none of my business and accused me of being a racist police officer.
I assured Gates that I was responding to a citizen's call to the Cambridge Plice and that the caller was outside as we spoke. Gates seemed to ignore me and picked up a cordless telephone and dialed an unknown telephone number. As he did so, I radioed on channel 1 that I was off <u>in the residence</u> with someone who appeared to be a resident but very uncooperative.
I then overheard Gates asking the person on the other end of his telephone call to "get the chief" and "whats the chief's name?". Gates was telling the person on the other end of the call that he was dealing with a racist police officer in his home. Gates then turned to me and told me that I had no idea who I was "messing" with and that I had not heard the last of it.
While I was led to believe that Gates was <u>lawfully in the residence</u>, I was quite surprised and confused with the behavior he exhibited toward me. I asked Gates to provide me with photo indentification so that I could verify that he resided at *** Ware Street and so that I could radio my findings to ECC. Gates initially refused, demanding that I show him identification <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">but then did supply me with a Harvard University identification card</span>. </font size>
- <font size="3">Gates acted Stupidly. From my vantage point, it appears that Gates was upset with Crowley standing in his home questioning his (Gates') right to be, in his own home. Not satisfied with what he had heaped on Crowley inside the home, however, Gates stupidly accepted took the bait laid by Crowley to take the matter outside on the front porch where Gates no longer had the advantage.</font size>

Crowley didn't appreciate Gates doing what he had a legal right to do inside his home (identify himself; be free of further police interference; and exercise his Constitutional Right to say what the fuck he pleased while in the confines of his home and while not threatening anyfuckingbody.
Officer Crowley clearly laid the bait - - to continue the encounter outside, with knowledge that Gates was not a burglar, by encouraging him to come outside WHERE, if Gates said the same things outside that he had said inside, he could be subject to arrest.
Here is an excerpt of officer Crowley's statement:Upon learning that Gates was affiliated with harvard, I radioed and requested the presence of the Harvard University Police.
With Harvard University identification in hand, I radioed my findings to ECC on channel two and prepared to leave.
Gates again asked for my name which I began to provide. Gates began to yell over my spoke words by accusing me of being a racist police office and leveling threats that he wasn't someone to mess with.
At some point during this exchange, I became aware of Off. Carlos Figueroa was standing behind me. When Gates asked a thrid time for my name, I explained to him that I had provided in at his request two separate times. Gates continued to yell at me. <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">I told Gates that I was leaving</span> his residence and that if he had <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">any other questions</span> regarding the matter, <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">I would speak with him outside of this residence.</span>
As I began walking through the foyer toward the front door, I could hear Gates again demanding my name. <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">I again told Gates</span> that <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">I would speak with him outside</span>.
My reason for wanting to leave the residence was that Gates was yelling very loud and the acoustics in the kitchen and foyer were making it difficult for me to transmit pertinent information to ECC or other responding units.

His reply was "ya, I'll speak with your mama outside". when I left the residence, I noted that there were several Cambridge and Harvard University police officers assembled on the sidewalk in front of the residence. Additionally, the caller, Ms. Walen and at least sevaeral unidentified passwers-by were looking in the directo f Gates, who had followed be outside of ther esidence.
[Qx: The significance of this is Officer Crowley is establishing that there are members of the public and other people outside (in the public). Disorderly conduct is an offense "committed in public"]
As I descended the stairs to the sidewalk, Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I hand not heard the last of him. Due to the tumultuous manner Gates had exhibited in his residence as well as <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00"> his continued tumultuous behaviour outside the residence, in view of the public I warned Gates that he was becoming disorderly.</span> Gates ingnored my warning and continued to yell, <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">which drew the attention of both the police officers and citizdens</span>, who appared surporsed and alarmed by Gates's outburst. <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">For a secont time I warned Gates to calm down while I withdrew my department issued handcuffs from their carrying case</span>.
Gages again ignored my warning and continued to yell at me. It was at this time that I informed Gates that he was under arrest. I then stepped up the stairs, onto the porch and attmpted to place handcuffs on Gates. Gates initially resisted my atepmpt to handcuff him, yelling that he was "disabled" and would fall without his cane. After the handcufs were properly applied, Gates complained that they were too tight. I ordered Off. Ivey, who was among the repsonding officers, to handcuff Gates with his arms in front of him for his comfort while I secured a cane for Gates from within the residence.</font size>
- <font size="3">The Police Won. I believe the facts show that both Crowley and Gates, acted stupidly. Gates erred when he didn't realize that by trying to make his point "In Public" in the manner, perhaps that he did (its not yet clear whether Gates was truly causing a public disturbance), and Crowley erred by inviting Gates into a "Public Confrontation" when his business was done (it was clear there was no burglary) and he should have exited the premises and went about partrolling.
BUT, the Police deemed Obama's words to be a direct challenge of, "The Police". Black and white officers and Police Organizations, none of which WERE AT THE SCENE suddenly came to the rescue of, The Police. At that point, the issue had been transformed. This wasn't about Gates anymore, it was about a challenge to Police Authority. The police, in general, demanded an apology. For what ???</font size>

- <font size="3">Obama Was Wrong. By not being armed with the facts, he made statements and took positions that were not wrong, but ones he wasn't prepared, at the time, to defend. He did a good job realizing that and found a way to diffuse the situation. In the end, however, the Police must be licking their night sticks. The President retreated from an important discussion of racism and the police; and the police left feeling they were right.
If they feel they are right, what are we to feel ? ? ?

Sounds like a lot to do about nothing.
Can't blame the caller for calling in the incident after what she saw but I still don't see why the cop arrested Gates for nothing more than shooting off his big mouth.
I definitely think Gates played the race card way too soon in this incident.
