Tesla plans to eliminate rare earth elements

Tesla made a splash at its latest Investor Day event with an announcement that could cause a ripple effect across the whole electric vehicle (EV) industry. The automotive company revealed its plan to eliminate rare earth elements from its electric motors.

As with anything Tesla-related, there are plenty of people talking about the latest milestone in EV development on social media. A Reddit user posted a link to an InsideEVs article in the r/Futurology subreddit with the caption, “Tesla’s Next-Gen Electric Motors Will Get Rid Of Rare Earth Elements.”

The post has over 600 comments, with many excited and others very skeptical.

The innovative electric motor could be a big step for the entire EV market. Automakers want to steer away from rare earth elements because, as the name suggests, they are rare, which makes them expensive.

But it’s also because China controls much of the supply chain. China accounts for close to two-thirds of the mining and 85% of the refining of these materials, which makes prices unpredictable.

Common elements used in EV motors are Neodymium, Dysprosium, and Terbium. They may not have been popular elements when you learned about the periodic table back in chemistry class, but these days they are super popular since they’re used for magnets in DC permanent magnet motors.

If Tesla delivers on its promise to completely eliminate these elements, it would drive down costs, which would drive down the price of its vehicles. Considering Tesla just recently slashed its prices, this would be a huge incentive for people to make the shift to an EV — especially considering the prices of EVs are expected to match the price of gas-powered cars in the very near future.

Although judging by commenters’ responses on the Reddit post, that is a big “if.”

Users were skeptical of Elon Musk’s promises, with one person writing, “First thing people should have learned from Musk is ‘don’t trust this guy’, so I’ll believe it when I see it.”

The post has a lot of comments, and “I’ll believe it when I see it” appeared multiple times in the thread. But as one user points out, “This sub is speculative. If this place was about tech that existed today, then it wouldn’t be … r/futurology.”

So, for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.

I'm calling bullshit. Electronics require rare earth metals to operate amd since Teslas are effectively smart phones with wheels, I don't see how this is possible unless they've found new methods to develop advanced circuitry without them. Elon is full of shit

I dont know were not Tesla battaries supposed to be hot

swappable? folks thought they were going to be able to carry an extra

battery in their trunk and just swap that bitch when needed...

LOL them shits aint even close to doing that shit....

promises promises just like most of the shit they promise you before a car is actually put

into production

Mofos got a rude awakening when they bought a used Tesla that was out of warranty and those batteries went bad....

 There are new innovations that do the same thing more efficient and better and are not rare earth...the only thing you got right is the four words in the middle.

Touche. Let's see what they come up with. Can you share any specifics?

EV price +fuel/maintenance savings < Gasoline car price+maintenance costs is not good. It is no wonder Chevy Bolt cars exploded. I tried to get a cheap gas car, this affordable priced EV is possessed.

You are Magic Johnson circa 1980's wearing Converse shoes. There is alot of political corruption and trillion dollar sovereign wealth funds heavily involved with the EV startups. Basically they will help them go private if their stock price tanks, it looks like an off the books hedging strategy.

Having access to oil caused all those wars in the Middle East, driving EV might trigger other wars staged in a similar manner. The EU is facing nuclear war because of their car the driving, it is an inversion of what we did in the Middle East.

I might post up in the politics section, Tesla are safe cars to get because the price + fuel savings will never be below a gasoline car.

Hydrogen could be a viable option, the calculation is way off on its feasibility.

Some examples, I'm not endorsing these at all, just answering your request. Too much for me to look up at the moment.

Graphene Batteries

Thorium Technology

Do some searches you'll get plenty of new tech that can do better than current EV materials...alternatives to Colbalt....

What if they start using water as fuel?
That technology has been here for over two decades. It was just silenced

If I'm not mistaken, you're specifically referencing battery tech, which I have read about. Graphene is indeed supposed to be superior to Lithium however, many electronic, non-battery components depend on rare earth metals. My point is, to achieve zero rare earth metals, you'd effectively have to create all of your own components (CPUs, displays, transistors, magnets, etc.). They would probably need to make all of those in house or pay massive premiums to source. Those parts aren't proprietary, so they're probably sourced from manufacturers who use traditional materials and methods. The undertaking they're suggesting is massive. For example, Teslas run on Android. Only way they achieve that goal is if they want to charge 3-5x what they're charging now for a vehicle. Fundamentally, I don't see that happening. Article feels like clickbait for that reason.

Check this out:

I think its a great idea, but perhaps still very ambitious at this point.

If capitalism didn't exist, this would absolutely be the best option for humanity/earth. Sadly, big oil has too much influence so we probably won't see mass adoption of this in our lifetimes. For example, Detroit is one of, if not the only, major city with no light rail system because the auto companies lobbied to keep it from happening. Force folks to buy more cars.

My bad. Just reread the article. They're only promising no rare earth metals in the motors, not the whole vehicle. So like I said, impossible to achieve 100% compliance. At least with today's tech.

I wrote about this inversion where oil producing countries are now inventing military conflicts or setting up dodgy investments in EV startups to stall mass adoption. The EU should have slow walked EV adoption, they went overboard with 20% adoption rates, with the complete elimination of gasoline cars.

I suspect the Russians were giving them cheap natural gas to politically corrupt them, alter their decisions on EV adoption rate. They thought about getting both, and this Ukraine conflict to stop this pipeline come into play. You see this with solar panels, it is just over the top flaunting their energy independence. They should have came out with a short range hybrid car with like 10 miles of EV range.

VP Al Gore, President Obama, and now President Biden had some suspicious deals. I think he was trying to influence peddle on his Energy policy. The IRA was to make sure that cheap EV batteries did not come from China.
