Mississippi has had its fourth child die from COVID-19, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs announced on Wednesday during a press conference.

Dobbs has spoken recently about data that shows that increasingly younger people are battling severe cases of the coronavirus. He said this week that 17 percent of those currently hospitalized with COVID are in the 40-49 age group.

The main reason for the increased danger to younger age groups is the delta variant of COVID-19, which has recently become the dominant strain in the U.S. after first wreaking havoc in India.

Dobbs said Wednesday that 93% of the recent COVID samples taken in the state are the delta variant.

“It’s highly contagious and most of the transmission is occurring from the unvaccinated,” Dobbs said. “Ninety-five percent of our new cases are unvaccinated.”

Children 12 and older are eligible to receive a vaccine, but it has yet to approved for younger children.

Dobbs said that there have been four deaths in children in Mississippi since the start of the pandemic. Two are in the age range of 11-17, one in the 6-10 age group and one that was between the ages of 1 and 5.

“The recent death was a child who had an underlying health issue, but it was a common medical issue,” Dobbs said. “It’s not something that people don’t live with every day in Mississippi.

“It speaks to our need to prevent transmission. We are unfortunately going to see a tragedy like this from time to time.”

The number of children under the age of 18 hospitalized in Mississippi with COVID-19 is currently 10 with three in intensive care, Dobbs said on Wednesday. He also noted that many pediatric cases are sent to hospitals in surrounding states in places like Memphis and Mobile.

Dobbs said that the COVID threat to children will remain a possibility as long as the delta variant, which is twice as contagious as the original COVID strain, continues to spread easily among unvaccinated people.

“The vast majority of our kids are not immune. We have a big challenge going forward,” Dobbs said.

Dr. Paul Byers, who is the state epidemiologist, said that the best answer to protect children and their relatives is to seek out the vaccine.

“We encourage parents to get kids who are eligible vaccinated,” Byers said. “This can help prevent transmission in school settings and among the vulnerable population, especially when you have a situation where there is a shared household.”

It’s gonna come down to are you dumb as fuck or your parents? Society in general is filled with the unfortunate and the moronic. To see people with masks on but not their kids says it all. Who cares what any expert has ever said; if you didn’t mask up day one or stopped recently you’re a moron and detriment to society. Feel sorry that people are so dumb they believe kids aren’t high risk. You’re a special level of stupid to wear a mask but not put one on your child. That level of lunacy can only be rivaled by Fox News viewers. Still, I see is not masking our kids too. Sad shit.

Now you are going to see a lot of these stupid Republican governors start changing course. For example, the Arkansas governor just switched his mask mandate yesterday. You have to have the right people in charge when a crisis happens or shit can go further sideways very quickly.

This shit is about to get out of hand real quick when these damn GOP clout chasing MFs made this political that was the beginning of the end, the more their base catches Covid and starts dying off they might change course but they will never say they were wrong. :smh:

To be honest with you I think it’s too late they was trying to undermine Joe Biden and it looks like their bullshit came back and bit them in the ass.

Damn...these days living in a blue state, working from home with no kids and living by myself feels like winning the lottery! Brothers in red states that have to be out in this madness or have others in your home that have to be out in it, be careful!
The slight saving grace with me is that I live in Atlanta Metro.

Yeah, you live on a blue island in a sea of red. One of the best places to live if you're in the south. Are ya'll bringing Kasim back or no?
I wish Keisha would run again I really like her but I understand her frustration especially with the fucking governor. I don’t quite live in the city of Atlanta but Kasim kind of rub me the wrong way A little bit because there was a high amount of gentrification that happened under his administration…..if he could cut that down to zero or near zero then I may be cool with him again but we will see. I am also looking at the other black candidates in this race.

I'm on a blue island also but unfortunately, I have to go to the surrounding parishes to work and spend money and they are very red, although our democratic governor has forced a mask mandate for indoors but these cacs only follow it about 70% of the time outside of New Orleans.

With in New Orleans, the only cacs bitching about it are tourists. The white business owners in New Orleans would rather stay open and have masks than just go into a full lockdown.

My father and all of his people came up off Claiborne. I heard some serious horror stories about the Louisiana rednecks outside of New Orleans. Its a different kind of back water crazy down there. My Lafayette jump off works for LOPA and she said she got 10 covid deaths under 30 years old these past couple of weeks. I don't understand why people are so defiant with this pandemic. Dead is dead! Fuck the politics!

My sista said she been paying close attention to the people who’s been coming into the ER. She noticed that it seems like they been treating more younger people and Spanish speaking folks. Boy saying others ain’t coming in but seem like this new strain is attacking the folks who the first strain didn’t necessarily target. That was just something she’s been paying attention to, she said she might be tripping but that’s what she seeing over that last few weeks

damn shame
we would should be in a much better place this far into the pandemic
I said this before and I’m going to say it again……Trump put us in a deep hole if we had Obama or any other Democrat in charge at the beginning of this pandemic we would have been in a better position also right now you have stupid red state governors doing dumb shit.

the polarization (aka racism/hatred) jumped to another level starting with Obama
we'll never know for sure but if Obama was president and following suggestions from experts...Red States and Right wing media would've been doing the exact opposite. These the same ppl that hated Obamacare & states that turned down expanded mediacare. They are willing to cut off their nose to spite their face.

Yeah you are right but like I said if Obama was in charge of this virus would not have gotten out of control like it did in the first place remember two pandemics almost happened under him and he took care of it really quickly. Hell he even created a playbook on pandemics until Trump came in and threw it in the trash.

shit i forgot about that
his admininstration would be much more proactive and maybe it wouldnt have gotten this bad

but if was telling ppl to stay, social distance, mask up and get the vaccine...you know how that would've turned out
