A 13-year-old boy in Florida confessed to stabbing his mother to death as she slept Thursday night, police say, according to multiple outlets.

The boy, who has not yet been publicly identified, called police in Hialeah and told them he killed his mother, reported Local 10, NBC Miami and WSVN.

The boy’s mother was identified by authorities in reports as Irina Garcia, 39. When police arrived at the scene, they found Garcia dead next to a crib where there was a two-week-old baby, who was unharmed, the outlets reported.

NBC Miami, citing a Hialeah Police Department spokesperson, reported that the baby was the teen’s half-sister.

According to the police spokesperson, the 13-year-old is a middle school honor student and was apologetic when officers arrived, reported Local 10.

"We don't know, that's something that we're still trying to figure out," Hialeah police spokesperson Eddie Rodriguez, addressing a possible motive, told NBC. "He did not say why he did this, all he did was call 911 and advise what he did."

NBC reported that the boy is likely to face a second-degree murder charge.

It very very unfortunate what happened but that could be the result of a failure in parenting. How do you go from 9 months as a baby to a killer at 13 years old? Does the boy have a father, or even a father figure/male role model in his life?

Maybe it's a different breed of generation today that is very heavily influenced by social media than the one I grew up in. When I was 13 I was busy playing Super Mario Brothers and riding my bicycle with the neighbourhood homies.

How does a young mind form and develop thoughts of taking another person's life at 13 years old?

At 13 I was afraid of my mom if I got in trouble because I was the child and she was the adult. It's like these kids nowadays have no fear of consequences anymore.

Hmm, when did they start showing mugshots for minors?

I'm pretty sure it's always been the case that minors charged with murder or other serious crimes will have their mugshots posted

Another article said the boy was formally charged with second degree murder.

Did you read the part that said he was an honor student?
