I've been in denial. I've finally come to the conclusion that AIDS really is a conspiracy to kill black people.

I finally realized the truth in June, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that African Americans represent about half of all people living with HIV in the United States. We're only 12 percent of the population. If that were not enough, 37 percent of the total U.S. AIDS deaths are black, 69 percent of new female HIV infections are among black women, and, most horrifying, a new five-city study found 46 percent of black gay and bisexual men were already infected with HIV.



Nearly half! With numbers like that, there's got to be a conspiracy going on. The question, however, is whose conspiracy is it?

After CDC's announcement of all this alarming new data, a few activists, including myself, tried to shake black people into realizing that we've entered a new era -- one in which the AIDS epidemic simply cannot be ignored. A few mainstream dailies covered the story. And then ... nothing.

To my knowledge, no black media followed up to jump-start discussions. No civil rights organizations marched or called on policy makers to take action. No black celebrities sponsored relief concerts. No black gay organization called on policy makers to take action.

What other than a conspiracy of silence could explain this collective shrug at such shocking information?

Put this into perspective. AIDS rates of this magnitude are close to -- if not already past -- the "tipping point" where the virus becomes almost impossible to stop. As for black gay and bisexual men, nearly 50 percent is downright genocidal.

Look at the hardest hit parts of sub-Saharan Africa: Swaziland, with the highest HIV rate on the planet, has an adult HIV prevalence of nearly 40 percent, followed by Botswana with 37 percent, and South Africa with 25 percent. All these countries face decades of stalled economic development, families gutted of entire generations, and deep, irreversible tears in the social fabric. And yet, none suffer from infection rates on par with those that the CDC cited among America's black and gay bisexual men.

Sure, the high rates among gay and bisexual men won't carry the same society-wide ramifications as the rates among all adults in hard-hit African countries. But rationalizations of that sort are exactly what have kept us paralyzed in denial. We always find a way to wall off reality by thinking of AIDS as happening to someone else -- gays, drug users, Africans. But will we dither until rates among middle class drug-free heterosexuals catch up with Africa?

Yes, there are many reasons why our community hasn't yet responded to the new CDC data. But maybe a young man I was speaking with recently boiled it down to the bitter essence when he said, "Nobody cares about us -- including us."

Every time a black minister uses his pulpit to spew homophobic bile and we sit in the pews and don't object, we join the conspiracy. Every time we let an elected official fail to push for federal funding of needle exchange programs that give drug users clean needles and a chance to get into drug treatment, we join the conspiracy. Every time we -- male or female, gay or straight -- have unprotected sex, we join the conspiracy.

So you don't believe HIV causes AIDS. So what? You should still protect yourself. AIDS prevention measures also prevent transmission of other diseases, such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B and C.

What if AIDS really was started by a bunch of crazy white scientists in a laboratory? What if one -- or even all -- of the AIDS conspiracies really is true? Then what?

We still have to survive, that's what.

Here's how: Starting now, civil rights groups should offer HIV testing at their conventions and at every single major event they hold -- and they should set, and meet, annual testing goals.

Historically black colleges and universities should develop and administer AIDS 101 curricula to be included in freshman orientation, and they should sponsor AIDS peer education programs. Black churches should adopt black AIDS organizations and collect "love offerings" once a month to donate to those organizations. Black newspapers and magazines should make a commitment to include HIV/AIDS information in every issue. Black radio stations should commit to run at least one AIDS public-service announcement every day.

And most important, we should all get tested, learn about the latest life prolonging HIV treatments, and get involved with one of the groups trying to stop this epidemic raging among us.

Unless and until we are doing everything in our power to stop the devastation HIV/AIDS is causing in our communities, we need not look any further than the nearest mirror to find out why black people are getting infected with HIV and dying from AIDS at greater numbers than anyone else.

We can stop the conspiracy -- because the conspirators are us.

While I don't think it's a "conspiracy", I do think the figures are ridiculous. Everyone should know how to protect themselves from AIDS by now. The real question is, why aren't people listening? How can anyone possibly contract AIDS in this day and age unless they're just ignoring the warnings. Unless someone is raped and contracts it, or a condom breaks and you contract it, or if you're born with it, there's really no excuse. I mean 69% of all new cases are black women? White men outnumber everybody when it comes to crazy ass sex, simply cause its more of them, yet they aint dying.

A small human study may point the way to a cure for AIDS.

Behind the stunning results is a totally new approach to HIV treatment. It makes use of an epilepsy drug -- valproic acid -- that flushes HIV out of its most remote hiding places in the body.

Combined with powerful HIV drugs, the approach might totally eliminate the AIDS virus from the body. That promises a cure for AIDS, says study leader David M. Margolis, MD.

"This might lead to a therapy that would clear virus from an infected person, or reduce it to such a low level they would not need treatment for a very long time," Margolis tells WebMD. "But that is only a hope for the future. It will require a lot more work. Today, HIV is still a problem."

The Margolis team's groundbreaking report appears in the Aug. 13 issue of The Lancet. Accompanying it is an editorial by McGill University researcher Jean-Pierre Routy, MD, PhD.

"This is very serious data -- a very exciting piece of information," Routy tells WebMD. "For the first time, the disease may be attacked in the last cells where it is hiding. That is a sign of hope. We can expect one day to remove all these infected cells."

HIV in Hiding

A decade ago, there was great optimism that powerful AIDS drug combinations would eliminate HIV from the bodies of infected people. These highly active antiretroviral therapies -- HAART -- put the AIDS virus on the defensive. The drugs kept HIV levels so low, it was hoped that the virus would soon vanish from the body.

That didn't happen. The reason: latent HIV. Latent HIV is inactive virus planted deep in the DNA of human cells. There it lies in wait, beyond the reach of anti-HIV drugs. This tiny, smoldering infection is enough to burst into full-fledged AIDS once a person stops taking HAART.

Researchers have tried everything, from years of toxic drugs to bone marrow transplants, to get rid of latent HIV. None of it worked. Making this even more maddening were recent findings that this last reservoir of HIV infection is very small.

"The total amount of infected cells is very small: just 1 gram in a person with normal body weight," Routy says. "But until a few weeks ago it was impossible to attack these cells."

Unmasking HIV

What changed? Until now, most efforts focused on turning the latent infection into active infection. The idea was to get HIV out in the open where HAART drugs and immune responses could get at it. But these approaches had the disadvantage of making HIV replicate faster throughout the body.

Margolis' team was one of several taking a different approach. Instead of activating the HIV gene in latent cells, they changed the cells' DNA architecture. To do this, they took advantage of the ability of valproic acid to inhibit an enzyme called HDAC.

"We thought a way to unmask latent virus would be to inhibit HDAC so you are not activating the virus but sort of taking the brake off," Margolis says.

Patients Respond

It worked in the test tube. So Margolis and colleagues tested their idea at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas.

They recruited four volunteers with HIV infection. Each of them once had AIDS, but had their virus brought under control by HAART drugs. However, none of these volunteers had immune responses capable of fighting HIV.

Margolis and colleagues first intensified the patients' treatment by adding a new kind of HIV drug, Fuseon, to their treatment regimens. Then they gave them valproic acid for three months.

The results were unprecedented. Three of the four volunteers had an average 75 percent decrease in their latent HIV pool.

That's pretty amazing -- but none of the patients were actually cured of HIV infection. Margolis says it's going to take time to learn the best way to use valproic acid as an anti-HIV drug. And even if it's 100 percent effective at eliminating latent virus, he notes that current HAART treatment does not totally eliminate HIV replication. Until that happens, the pool of latent virus could always be replenished.

But that isn't always going to be an obstacle, Margolis predicts.

"If I look backward five to 10 years to the relative impotency of treatment, and look forward to how simple and effective treatment might be in five or 10 years, you will see the field does a good job of inhibiting HIV," he says. "If that is the only problem to overcome, we can definitely cure infection."

Warning to Patients: Don't Try This at Home

Margolis warns patients not to try taking valproic acid. It's a drug with serious possible side effects that include liver damage and, if taken by pregnant women, birth defects. Valproic acid also has dangerous interactions with AIDS drugs. In fact, one of the four patients in the study developed serious anemia because of an interaction with one of the drugs in his HAART regimen.

"It is totally irrational for patients to add valproic acid to therapy, outside clinical trials, at this point," Margolis says. "How much valproic acid would they take? How long would they take it for? How could you measure when they had enough? How do they know when to stop? There are plenty of reasons not to take valproic acid at this point."

Routy says that his team is organizing a clinical trial to try to find the best way to use valproic acid as an adjunct to HAART. He also expects the findings to give new impetus to therapeutic AIDS vaccines.

Meanwhile, the world AIDS pandemic continues unabated.

"We have to focus on HIV treatment today," Margolis says. "Right now we must continue to prevent, detect, and treat HIV infection. Finding a vaccine to prevent AIDS is still very important. But that goal is no more challenging than the goal of eradicating infection. And that is a worthy goal as well."

"Eradicating HIV from the body is a big hope," Routy. "But the hope is not today."

Probably why DC is looking to test EVERYBODY for AIDS/HIV. People just don't realize just how pervasive this virus is and how destructive sex has become in recent years to the future of our race. The media continues to sexualize our little girls, the food industry pumps our foods with so much hormone that brothers are turning "bitch" overnight and our girls can't wait to get a dick hung up inside em trying to be grown before their time.

HansSolo is right. Women are no longer modest and want to have as much sex as guys do and have it "accepted" as a normal condition when they can't. AIDS cure wont' come before our Black women are labled a libility to society.

The liar, the predator and the closeted guy

Could it be a coincidence that R&B legend Luther Vandross passed away in the same week when Terry McMillan's divorce to a Gay man became public and R. Kelly's new "Trapped In The Closet" music video outed a closeted Gay man?

On June 30, just hours after Logo launched the first-ever Gay television channel on basic cable, our heads were spinning with news that Luther Vandross had died at 54. Four days earlier, the San Francisco Chronicle first reported the lurid details of McMillan's divorce court filings.

In each story, mass media's well-worn caricature of the deceitful - and dangerous - Black Gay man took center stage. And on the heels of new research suggesting nearly half of Black Gay and bisexual men in several major cities may be HIV positive, we have to ask: What is the relationship between these images and our physical and emotional health?

In the very first show to air on Logo (a documentary called The Evolution Will Be Televised), Gay activist Urvashi Vaid warned Gays and Lesbians that visibility does not equal acceptance. She's right, of course, but those of us who are Black and Gay are still struggling just to be visible, still waiting for more of our own heroes to come out or be seen. Like the characters in R. Kelly's musical soap opera, too many of us are still trapped in our own closets.

Of course, some of the Black Gay men who have been visible recently are not our best representatives. No matter what else he does in life, for example, Jonathan Plummer will always be remembered as Terry McMillan's Gay spouse-left to be immortalized like Bobby Brown, who introduced himself to the Dali Lama as "Whitney Houston's husband."

McMillan's husband claims in court records (published online at thesmokinggun.com) that he did not know he was Gay when he met and married his famous companion. Down low "expert" J.L. King - author of the sensational memoir "On the Down Low" - quickly pronounced Plummer's explanation not just implausible, but impossible. "Nonsense," King told the Washington Post. "He knew he was Gay."

I'm not sure if Plummer is telling the truth, but his story is certainly plausible. I know because I came out when I was 25 years old, and I never knew I was Gay and never slept with a man before that time.

So how would King know the mental state of a 20-year-old Jamaican man he apparently never met? And how does someone like King, who can't even decide if he's straight or Bisexual, become a spokesperson for the Black LGBT community? No matter. Just in time for the McMillan controversy, the producers of the Oprah Winfrey Show, on hiatus for the summer, scheduled a July 7 re-run of the controversial "down low" show that first catapulted him to public attention 15 months ago.

But there is another twist to this story. Plummer accuses McMillan of hurling hateful homophobic epithets at him after he told her he was Gay. "I'm Black and rich again and female and I'm smarter than you and an army of fags," McMillan allegedly wrote to him in January. I asked openly Gay author E. Lynn Harris, a personal friend of McMillan's, for perspective. "Terry is not homophobic. It's not fun going through a breakup of any sort," he told me. "It becomes even more difficult when you're a public figure."

Harris makes a reasonable point. But McMillan's lawyer wants the world to think beyond her client's emotional pain. "It's very scary for her," attorney Jill Hersh said, according to the Post, "because he appears to have been living a dual life that has left her exposed to disease." Hersh refused to answer whether McMillan had actually been tested for HIV or any other STD, choosing to instead leave its ominous specter suspended in our minds.

These days, it seems, the deceitful closet cases that people our "army of fags" are murderous as well.

Many years ago, when I was still new to the SF bay Area? I was living in a residential Hotel in the infamous Tenderloin District. It was a known "Shooting Gallery", a place that was occupied by many junkies, heroine addicts.

This crusty cat that lived there, one of my few friends, and Vietnam War Veteran and I were having a conversation one day. The Medical examiner was carting out yet another body with a blanket over it's head. Anyway, we somehow got on the issue of AIDS and HIV. This was well over ten years ago, by the way. Anyhow, I first heard of the possibility that AIDS was not sexually transmitted from him. I had never thought much of it myself, just kept my test results current, LOL...

But he pointed out that everyone he knows who has contracted HIV sexually is just living with it. But that everyone who had full bown AIDS and died from it was a junkie. Of course we had a plethora of both examples to look at, non-scientiffically, just by way of common sense rationalization and intellectualizing. I was compelled to concur with his observation. Hell if I knew of the actual scientific stats and compiled data. But my neighbors in that Hotel definitely showed and proved.

I kow a lot of Black folks who have HIV and are simply living with it, and in fear mind you. Fear of full blown AIDS. On the other hand? I've known plenty of White folks who were shooters, perfectly healthy just five years ago, dead from AIDS complications today.

Let the scientists debate the actual stats, conceal what they don't want us to know, and reveal what they think is "safe". But in my lifetime? I can honestly say that I see something ghastly and repugnant about this AIDS situation. It's one more of those things that just doesn't add up right. I can guarantee you: Look where there are high rates of AIDS cases, statistically, anywhere in the world. You will then also find, side by side, hand in hand, SOME kind of needle use.

Don't take my word for it. Do the knowledge for yourselves...

I think that the AIDS was a conspiracy to kill gays, but they fucked up and it spilled over, remember how it used to be a gay disease, I think they hardly talked about it then, hell, I think they ignored it, I was aware in my Health class in middle school(7th grade). but AIDS should be gone by now or on its way out the door in the U.S. because the people that caught it should be dead by now and if you're in your early thirties and you contracted it, then you have to be stupid with all the information out. it's not hard to find information on it, go to your local clinic and you'll find a whole shitload....there's no undereducation, cats are just acting like their invincible again.

Most black guys I know do not use or care about condoms. "What the hell for", "Fuck that shit"...and so on. Irresponsible fucking and no sense of self preservation. It's not so much about getting a condom on but more about getting people's heads out their asses. People stopped using their heads and are paying for it.

AIDS is not a freaking conspiracy. It is a problem Blacks do not want to protect themselves against plain and simple.

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – With African-Americans representing more than half of all people newly infected with HIV in the United States, AIDS has become a “Black disease” that deserves unprecedented community mobilization to halt the rapid spread of the deadly virus, experts told delegates attending the NAACP’s annual convention here.

At a panel discussion over the weekend on HIV/AIDS, Phill Wilson, executive director of the Los Angeles-based Black AIDS Institute, stated: “Today, AIDS in America is a Black disease. The tragedy is it didn’t have to be that way, but it is.”

African-Americans are 13 percent of the U.S. population and represent a disproportionate share of those with HIV or AIDS.

“More than half of all people living with AIDS and newly-infected with HIV each year in the United States are Black,” Wilson said.

“Among women, Blacks account for 62 percent of all reported AIDS cases through 2003. Two-thirds of all new infections among women are Black. AIDS is the leading cause of death among Black women between the ages of 24 and 34. And recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies estimate nearly half of all Black gay and bisexual men in some of America’s urban centers are already infected. These facts represent an unprecedented crisis for Black America.”

Pernessa C. Seele, founder and CEO of The Balm in Gilead, a group that organizes Black church leaders in the U.S. and Africa, says that the church has been complicit in the failure to address this growing crisis.

“The universal church has been a destructive force on HIV because of the one message that everybody’s heard around the world, particularly in our community, is that AIDS is a sin, it’s a punishment from God. Twenty-five years later [after AIDS was identified as a virus], we’re still fighting that myth, that lie.”

She explained, “I cannot tell you how many African-Americans I see everyday, especially middle-class Americans, who still believe this is a homosexual disease – AIDS is caused by homosexuals. Twenty-five years later, we’re still fighting with that noose around our neck. We have got to take the bull by the horn and stop this lie because it’s killing us.”

In addition disproportionate high rates of infection among Black women, the rates of infection are extremely high among Black teens and men who have sex with other men. A recent CDC survey of five major U.S. cities found that 46 percent of Black males having sex with other males were infected with HIV, compared to 21 percent of Whites and 17 percent of Hispanics.

Although African-Americans between the ages of 13 and 19 represent only 15 percent of all teens, they accounted for 66 percent of all new AIDS cases among teenagers in 2003.

Returning to her condemnation of churches that contend that AIDS is God’s punishment for sin, Seele declared, “If there is a sin, it is a sin that we, the adults, have allowed our children to have this 100 percent preventable disease.”

Seele said that ministers that were part of the problem must now become part of the solution.

“We have to engage our faith community,” she says. “There is only one institution in our community owned and operated by Black people and that’s our church. Second, it is the only institution that has a system, an organized, sustained system that reaches Black folk around the world.”

Dr. Kim Smith of Rush Medical Center in Chicago says the sooner people find out they have contracted HIV, the better chance they have of living relatively healthy lives. To illustrate her point, she contrasts the lives of two Black celebrities: “Magic” Johnson, the former pro basketball star, and Easy-E, a rapper.

“Magic is extremely fortunate. He got his HIV test when he was completely healthy,” Smith explains. “He had a strong immune system, he went to a doctor, he got on appropriate medications right away as part of a clinical trial. He got access to medicines right away and we see what he looks like now.”

But Easy-E was a different case.
“Easy-E died of AIDS,” Smith stated.

“Like Magic Johnson, he was rich. He had access to resources. He could have gotten access to care. But he never got tested until he had AIDS. He found out he had AIDS when he was in the hospital with pneumonia, on a breathing machine, and by that time, unfortunately, we couldn’t do anything about it. So he died. The contrast between Magic and Easy-E is when you get tested.”

Wilson says health statistics show that AIDS is ravaging the Black community.

“Black America must accept a new reality,” Wilson says. “We can no longer pretend AIDS is someone else’s problem or that HIV happens somewhere else. AIDS is not knocking on Black America’s door. It has let itself in, raided the refrigerator and is waiting for us in our bedrooms.”

Wilson issued eight challenges:

1) Established leaders, from civil rights activists to Black ministers, should help lead a campaign to end the AIDS epidemic in Black America;

2) African-Americans should become more knowledgeable about AIDS;

3) African-Americans must get tested and know their HIV status;

4) The federal ban on funding needle exchange programs should be lifted;

5) AIDS prevention efforts should be expanded beyond federal abstinence only programs;

6) Federal officials should make healthcare more affordable and increase funding for the Ryan White Care Act;

7) Society should eliminate stigmas that help HIV to spread; and

8) African-Americans should organize special programs targeted at key groups afflicted by AIDS, including Black youth, women, drug users and men who have sex with men.​

“We’re calling on Black America – from individuals to political, religious and cultural leaders – to commit to taking action against HIV/AIDS by engaging in a coordinated campaign to develop a national commitment to end the AIDS epidemic in our communities by making fighting AIDS a top priority and setting concrete measurable goals and objectives with real deadlines,” Wilson says.

“Black leaders, institutions and cultural icons must identify strategies and activities that match their unique niches and capabilities. We must build a new sense of urgency in Black America, so that no one accepts the idea that the presence of HIV and AIDS is inevitable.”

GET YOU HOT posted a chart that looks like it has a typo in it. I'm sure that the infected rate per/100k whites should be 12.0 not 2.0.

Most black guys I know do not use or care about condoms. "What the hell for", "Fuck that shit"...and so on. Irresponsible fucking and no sense of self preservation. It's not so much about getting a condom on but more about getting people's heads out their asses. People stopped using their heads and are paying for it.

AIDS is not a freaking conspiracy. It is a problem Blacks do not want to protect themselves against plain and simple.

More importantly though is for all blacks to protect themselves...stop playing the blame game, AIDS, HIV, from what we know, is for the most part a preventable disease...

Scientists found a component called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) prevents HIV from binding to immune system cells by getting there first.

Once EGCG has bound to immune system cells there is no room for HIV to take hold in its usual fashion.

However, experts said the joint UK and US work, which appears in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, was at a very preliminary stage.

Researcher Professor Mike Williamson, of the University of Sheffield, said: "Our research shows that drinking green tea could reduce the risk of becoming infected by HIV, and could also slow down the spread of HIV.

"It is not a cure, and nor is it a safe way to avoid infection, however, we suggest that it should be used in combination with conventional medicines to improve quality of life for those infected.

"Future research is also currently under way in order to determine how much effect can be expected from different amounts of tea."

More work needed

Keith Alcorn, senior editor of the Aidsmap web service, said tests on animals would be needed before any conclusions could be safely drawn on the potential protective effect of drinking green tea.

"This study only looks at the ability of a chemical in green tea to block HIV binding to human CD4 immune cells in the test tube.

"Many substances shown to prevent HIV infection in the test tube turn out to have little or no effect in real life, so I think there's a long way to go before anyone should rely on green tea to protect against HIV infection."

Lisa Power, head of policy at the HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust said: "Condoms keep HIV at bay. Anything that boosts your immune system is beneficial for people with HIV, but green tea can't be a substitute for proper medication and prevention techniques."

Green tea has been linked to a positive effect on a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's.

The Secret Origins of AIDS: Facts, Fallacies & Conspiracy Theories

The epidemic did not begin in Africa. The first AIDS cases were uncovered in Manhattan in 1979. At that time there were no reported African cases. In fact, the AIDS epidemic in Africa did not begin until the autumn of 1982 at the earliest.

How was HIV introduced exclusively into the gay community in the late 1970s? The exclusive introduction of HIV into the homosexual population of New York City is an unprecedented event in the history of medicine. This biologic phenomenon has never been fully explained scientifically. There is certainly no evidence to indicate white gay men were the only people exposed to sexual contact with Africans, particularly at a time when the epidemic did not exist in Africa. Furthermore, it is biologically impossible for a purported sexually-transmitted and blood borne “virus out of Africa” to infect only young, white, healthy men in Manhattan! Yet, the impossible did happen. Despite these facts, we are repeatedly told that AIDS began in Africa, even though the American epidemic began before the African epidemic.

The mixing of AIDS facts and fallacies has long been apparent to researchers like myself who are convinced that HIV did not come from Mother Nature and “species jumping,” but was most likely introduced via contaminated vaccine experiments exclusively targeting the Black African and the American Gay community.

Before exploring the man-made theory of AIDS, it is important to note a small but highly vocal group who believes the cause of AIDS is still unknown, that the AIDS blood test is worthless, and that HIV is a harmless virus that is not sexually transmitted. This group, headed by retrovirologist Peter Duesberg and other well-credentialed scientific “dissidents,” believes AIDS is a toxic and nutritional syndrome. They blame AIDS on recreational drug use among gays – and poverty and malnutrition in Africa for the disease.

As a medical doctor and AIDS and cancer researcher, I am certainly not in accord with this group, but they have been quite successful politically, influencing world leaders like President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, much to the chagrin of the World Health Organisation. The ceremonies for the 2012 International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C., just ended on a high note: Together, we can end the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

But now that the curtains are drawn and the United States no longer has the world stage, the country faces an inescapable backdrop with an inescapable hue. And that hue is black.

Throughout last month’s International AIDS Conference, HIV advocates highlighted the enormous disparities afflicting U.S. women of color, for whom HIV infection rates are skyrocketing and reaching levels similar to those of sub-Saharan Africa.

The latest HIV data from the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that in 2009 black women accounted for nearly 30 percent of the estimated new HIV infections among all blacks. And although blacks represented only 14 percent of the U.S. population, blacks overall accounted for 44 percent of all new HIV infections in that same year.

Additionally, the rate of new HIV infections among black women was 15 times that of white women and over three times the rate among Hispanic/Latina women.

In the nation’s capital, where the 2012 conference was held, officials cited data showing that 90 percent of all women with HIV are black, with the burden falling mainly on heterosexual women.

Everyone agrees these numbers are disturbing, so what do we do about it?

Stopping HIV a Must

“If we can stop HIV, we can stop AIDS,” says Dazon Dixon Diallo, head of SisterLove, Inc., a women’s HIV/AIDS organization based in Atlanta and a member of an awareness campaign focused on women.

Called the “30 for 30 Campaign,” organizers are using it to call attention to the 30-year U.S. AIDS epidemic and the growing number of HIV-positive women who represent nearly 30 percent of those with HIV/AIDS in this country, and even more in some states.

The 30 for 30 Campaign takes the view that gender inequality drives HIV given the disproportionate number of HIV-positive women, including transgender women, who face barriers in accessing HIV prevention and treatment care, as well as those who suffer violence and stigmatization because of their HIV status.

Diallo says if the United States intends to end HIV among U.S. women–and among African American women in particular–policy makers must address social determinants that make women vulnerable to infection.

Those determinants include access to housing and gender-sensitive care, lack of control over financial resources, as well as gender-based violence that disproportionately afflicts poor women, women of color and transgender women.

C. Virginia Fields is president and CEO of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc., based in New York, and chair of the 30 for 30 Campaign. She says health reform–the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act–addresses these disparities and offers solutions that are detailed in a recently published guide by the campaign, in collaboration with the Harvard Law School Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation.

Call for Change

The report calls for routine HIV testing as part of comprehensive reproductive health care. It also calls for domestic-violence screening and assistance that relates to HIV prevention with a threatening sexual partner.

“Moreover,” says Fields, “it calls on states to expand Medicaid so that poor women, women of color and transgender women can get the HIV care they need.”

But that expansion is under political threat.

At least six Republican governors in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Louisiana and South Carolina have said they will opt out of the health care law’s Medicaid expansion program even though the federal government would foot the bill.

Five of those states—every one except Wisconsin–also have some of the highest rates of HIV and some of the nation’s poorest residents.

Harvard Law Professor Robert Greenwald, co-author of the guide on health reform’s promise for HIV prevention, says advocates will have to convince those states that the public health and fiscal benefits far outweigh any political party loyalties that have pitted Republicans against health care reform.

“The Supreme Court has spoken and the law is constitutional in all respects. It’s smart economically for states to invest now in treatment and prevention for persons living with or at risk for HIV,” says Greenwald.

Women in New York are 30% more likely to die in childbirth than they were just 12 years ago, a new report reveals.

And the maternal mortality rate has jumped even more dramatically among blacks from roughly 40 per 100,000 live births in the 1990s to 79 deaths last year, according to a new analysis released by the New York Women’s Foundation.

In contrast, white women had a steady rate of 10 deaths per 100,000 live births over the same time frame.

“It’s very troubling,” foundation President Ana Oliveira said of the statistics. “We need a community-based effort in which we bring together fundamental services.”

The report also revealed that Brooklyn is the “epicenter” of new HIV diagnoses for women, evidence that females in the Big Apple are not being properly educated about the preventable disease.

The report found that 32% of New York women who have contracted the virus that causes AIDS live in Kings County. The Bronx followed closely behind with nearly 30% of women with new HIV cases.

Citywide, black women had the highest rate of new diagnoses at about 65%, followed by Latinas at nearly 30%.

Oliveira added the feelings of shame associated with HIV likely contribute to the dismal figures.

“There is a lot of fear and stigma,” she said. “People not only have to deal with the physical reality, but the social stigma. It delays people seeking care.”

Also highlighted in the report:

- About 40% of women living in poverty in Staten Island are white; nearly 30% are Latina and 22% are black.

- More than 20,000 girls living in the city between ages 15 and 19 become pregnant each year.

Oliveira said the report shows that major inequalities still exist in the richest city in the richest nation on Earth. “It’s a city with a lot of wealth,” said Oliveira.

“So sometimes it’s easy not to see the conditions of HIV infection, poverty, violence, as clearly as we might see in environments that are much poorer.”

The report recommends investing in more job training and development programs for women in “high-demand” fields with higher salary potential, and creating programs to raise high school graduation rates among low-income girls.

Lisa Biagiotti has the facts. She knows that AIDS is the leading cause of death among Southern black women and that HIV has a 50 percent higher infection rate in the region. But in Biagiotti’s film, “deepsouth,” she presents the truth of HIV in the South through three personal stories.

“I do work on under-reported social issues,” said Biagiotti, an independent journalist and filmmaker based in New York. “Back in 2009/2010, I started reading some statistics about HIV in the South … I took a long road trip and drove over 13,000 miles and interviewed over 400 people over two and a half years, but none of those experts are in the film. There are no talking heads, no experts.

“It’s just three different stories about life around the epidemic in the South.”

One of those stories is that of Monica Johnson.

Johnson is a founder of Heroes, a nonprofit HIV services organization based in Monroe, La.. She’s been the subject of a PBS documentary and various other features.

“I’ve been positive for almost 30 years,” Johnson said. “(Biagiotti) came in, and it really wasn’t about me, it was actually about our retreat, Heroes retreat. She showed how it really is needed, because where we live there are no services. None. So it was just trying to show the reason why we keep trying to do this despite having no money, despite funding cuts.”

Johnson said the other features she was a part of expanded on people’s struggles and portrayed them as people who weren’t making it. She said Biagiotti focused on the services and how hard it is for providers to help the sick in their area.

“When I went to Monica’s support group, I said, ‘You know, this has nothing to do with HIV,’” Biagiotti said. “But yet it has everything to do with HIV, because it was about support, connection, self-worth and a safe space.”

The story of Kathie Hiers, CEO of AIDS Alabama, was another of the three Biagiotti tells in the film. Though AIDS Alabama is the largest AIDS service organization in the state, Hiers said she deals daily with a lack of resources and funding.

“I always joke that in the South, we could give seminars on how to do a lot with nothing,” Hiers said.

Hiers said her organization is so concerned by HIV in Alabama that it helps fund the other eight services in the state, including Unity Wellness in Auburn, which held a screening of “deepsouth” Tuesday.

“As the AIDS epidemic has moved to the South, the funding has not followed,” Hiers said. “This film is a great tool for us to be able to show people the reality of the situation down here. I love it.”

“This is a really beautiful little film that I think captures a lot of the struggles that people living with HIV face in the South,” Hiers said. “For me, as someone who advocates for people living with HIV, it shows the struggles I’ve faced to get fairer funding down here in the South.”

Biagiotti also depicted the story of Josh, a gay man with HIV living in Jackson, Miss.

“For me, it’s always been about the journalism, that we see the reality,” Biagiotti said of the film. “It’s a different kind of HIV narrative and one that the mainstream media has not told. We’ve only told really the story of gay, white men in urban areas, which is a wonderful story. It’s just that there are other narratives that seem to be neglected.”
