4K TV's Are A Waste Of Money

It was hard for me to find content for mine but I do think it’s improving. To me, 1080p is still fine. 780p for most

Yeah, but it's a 10-year old plasma and heavy as a bitch. And it's only 720p. I'm sure anything out now is better than that TV.

I'm considering this one on Rakuten.

Don't be so sure. Usually in the wild and wacky world of technology if you bought something 10 years ago you figure if you bought it again today it would be much better. If we were talking a PC or a cellphone or a Washing Machine that would be a given. In the world of HDTV things aren't so straightforward. You have to understand that HDTV is still pretty young. The TV standard it replaced had been around for half a century. It's been roughly 21 years since the first US HDTV broadcast. It's been about 10yrs since the last terrestrial NTSC broadcast. In the last 10 years LCD/LED (with all its warts) has become the prominent viewing technology for HDTV. Main reason being it is cheap to produce. The move from CRT to LCD/LED started in the early 00's a time during which Consumers were ripped off with various EDTV, SDTV. sets with no tuners and other special brands of fuckery. Unfortunately the two best technologies for visuals at the time Plasma and CRT where doomed and being phased out. Plasma eventually died because of sales and production cost especially for 4k models which could never be produced cheaply. OLED tech is the heir apparent to the performance level of Plasma but tis still too expensive to be a threat to LCD/LED on the low end

LCD/LED is the dominant tech now because its cheap to produce and the sets are light weight. However it still suffers from same of the same limitations it always had poor blacks and motion blur and poor viewing angles. Instead of fixing those issues the industry has come up with tech gimmicks like 240Hz refresh rates 4k UHD making every set a Smart set. Granted there are some very nice LCD\LED sets that are tolerable you won't find them under $500. As has been always the case the better 55"-65" HDTV's are still in the $1500-$2500. IF you don't mind making a few compromises you can find an ok set between $500-1000$. I doubt you can get a set today under $500 that can equal a Plasma set from 10 years ago if that set is in fairly good shape.

As the owner of a 4k TV, I kind of have to agree with the OP.
There is little to no 4k content available for streaming.
The few 4k movies and shows I have watched have not blown me away, not like it was going from 720p/1080i to 1080p and definitely not like going from standard def (SD) to high def (HD).
Some of y'all are getting 4k and the over-processing that some of these TVs do to produce the "soap opera effect" confused.

Thankfully, I got a very good deal on my Sony 70" 4k and didn't pay too much more than a 1080p set.
I feel bad for the early adopters who paid through the nose when the 4k sets first came out.

OLED is a whole nother discussion. Now that blows away everything away right now. But of course, you'll have to pay for it.

fuck it just give me back my black and white tube tv

It's in your living room....next to the whale oil lamp !!!

I'm not against the 4K tech, but right now, I'm sittin on three 47 inchers, two 65 inchers and one 70 incher...I dont need anymore tv's, lol. By the time I do, hopefully the 4K's will be dirt cheap, but then again, by then yall will have moved on to the 8K's.
And Sharp is now expanding its distribution of one such set, the 70-inch LV-70X500E. Following its October debut in China and subsequent arrivals in Japan and Taiwan, this 8K display will go on sale across Europe at the end of April for €11,199 -- about $13,800 at current exchange rates. Sharp hasn't announced anything about U.S. availability, but during a conversation at CES in January, Sharp marketing vice-president Rey Roque said an American price for this set would be in the "low five figures."

That, apparently, is supposed to be a reasonable price for a set that supports a video format that offers next to nothing to watch, that can't be streamed on most broadband connections or fit onto Blu-ray discs and which can't even be properly appreciated unless you get a set too big to fit in many living rooms."

Thanks. Good info.

Man when I saw a 4K OLED for the first time I swear I stood in place drooling for a solid 15 minutes staring at the screen. The sales rep at Best Buy couldn't help but laugh before telling me I'm not the first to react like that. The image is beyond beautiful. Then I saw the price and came back to reality quickly.
Bout $6K for the 55" model

It's funny that this old thread was bumped.

I just bought the LG OLED Picture on Glass 65 inch last Thursday

and I must say that this picture is insane!

My DJI Drone shoots 4K movies and watching them on this TV

makes these vids look totally different than on ANY other display!

I went to the store with a friend in my truck so we can

bring his Samsung 55 inch back in my truck.

When we got there, I saw the OLED 65 Picture on Glass (the Picture on Glass makes the

picture unlike ANY other TV) and I negotiated a hella deal and rolled out with it!

No regrets!

I initially told her that I was interested in the Samsung Curve and was waiting for years for the price to come down a bit and she told me that Samsung stopped making them because the concept never really took off with the customers!

I told her that I've only fucked with Samsung displays for quite some time now and she said thag if I wanted the baddest picture possible, NOTHING is fucking with the LG OLED Picture on Glass!

She was right.... except for the price, I have no complaints.

I thought I would never buy an LG, but here we are. :dunno:

In my advertising life I worked with LG and I can't stand those no bill paying crazy assholes.

With that being said they know how to make a beautiful TV. Helped a friend buy a 50 4k TV from Costco and her picture is BEAUTIFUL.

maybe u guys don't have your settings right or something but looking at any of my 4k screens is the same as looking out the window to the point the sharpness almost makes shit 3d

How's that look w light in the room?

It looks outstanding.
This BenQ projector has the ability to adjust the gamma, so the you do not need a completely dark room to have a great picture.
My room has the windows blacked out.
Completely dark with just a small night light on the wall.

I bought a TCL 55 inch 4k HDR for only $600 late last year. TV looks amazing I got an Xbox one x and a PS4 pro, games look outstanding on it. The One X plays 4K HD movie disc.

Are there any torrents or downloads of really clean 4k UHD movies of even just short snippets?
