Some people are reading the problem wrong. 48 is the numerator and 2(9+3) is the denominator. So you will have to solve for the denominator then divide the answer into the numerator. You will end up with 48 divided by 2*(9+3).The correct answer is 2.
I'm glad a lot of u MF's aren't building rockets and high tech shit or we all would be FUCKED!
Remixing my original post to make it clear.
In summary, the answer is 288...but it comes with a warning.
First note this important fact:
Now for the warning (although some, like Rawness, may disagree).
If you are still in school or are taking a test and see the problem written as:
48
2(9+3)
But this is not how the problem is presented...
I have answered as it was written....

I just looked at the poll results.
Oh well. Life is about learning. None of us know everything.
48÷2(9+3) = ????
this should be interesting
distributive property!
48/2(9+3)
48/(18+6)
48/24
2

You have to remember 48 is the numerator and 2(9+3) is the denominator. You have to completely solve for the denominator before you can divide. So you will end up with 48/24. The correct answer is 2.
I understand that. Hence, my explanation. What was your answer?
2
p.e.m.d.a.s.
48÷2(9+3) = 48÷2*(9+3)
48÷2*12
24*12
288
This is why america lags so far behind other countries when it come to math. People are allowed to graduate without learning it.![]()
The answer is 2.
BB was going wild with this, Neogaf is also.

Distributive property of multiplication over addition. Early Algebra problem.
The distributive property of multiplication CLEARLY states that the 2(9+3) is an entire statement and CANNOT be broken up. 2(9+3) follows the distributive property which can be rewritten as (2*9+2*3). Let me repeat the 2 outside of the parenthesis follows the distributive property of multiplication and must be factored and simplified before performing any other operations on it. You do NOT compute this expression from left to right until you use Algebra to simplify the statement 2(9+3).
So this can be rewritten as:
48 / (2*9 + 2*3)
Which leaves us with
48 / 24 = 2
Answer = 2.
Lastly for those using Google or any other online calculator. These do not understand many theorems or properties so you must explicitly explain what you mean. There is a difference between 48 / 2 * (9+3) and 48 / 2(9+3). The first notation reads 48 / 2 * 1(9+3) while the second reads 48 / (2*9+2*3). Be very careful with your signs.

wasup all you niggaz talking shit to other who came up with 2
I even had my advisers talking about this. Its a very interesting problem that can easily go unnoticed until something like this comes up.
I think what is making the thread so funny is that people are so sure the answer is 2. One thing to take from the thread is that people are making an effort to argue their point which most are actually valid points. They are just wrong in the sense of how the problem is read.

"Some of you are treating the parenthetical as an actual multiplication symbol. It's not. It serves as a multiplier, but to the number it is attached to. The 2 is attached to the parenthetical, which means you must solve it as part of the first step in the order of operations. This isn't rocket science."
Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction
For addition and subtraction, use the standard + and - symbols respectively. For multiplication, use the * symbol. A * symbol is not necessiary when multiplying a number by a variable. For instance: 2 * x can also be entered as 2x. Similarly, 2 * (x + 5) can also be entered as 2(x + 5); 2x * (5) can be entered as 2x(5). The * is also optional when multiplying with parentheses, example: (x + 1)(x - 1).
I make it 2 sir...!!!
No NONO!NO!

its attached to 48/2 not 2 by its self.

You changed the equation if you input it "like this" 48/(2(9+3))
As the op wrote it, the equation is essentially (48/2)*(9+3)
Funny how the most disrespectful person in this thread is the most ignorant.
In math, the way you write it changes an equation without having to change the numbers or even the symbols.
You just said that 48/2(9+3) as written in the OP is 288. So you AGREED.
In your haste to act superior to others you make yourself look like an IDIOT by first AGREEING with me and those who said 288, but then saying they're WRONG! But YOU are the one changing the equation to hide the fact that you initially were INCORRECT!
Fuck that calculator shit man, these are simple ass numbers we're dealing with.
And I agree 48/(2(9+3)) IS 2. I already beat you to that punch as well. If you have me on ignore, then too bad because you'll remain IGNORANT. But I doubt anything could change that.
Your joyful ignorance is sad.
Youre gleeful because you don't know shit
I find that sad, bruh
The P in PEMAS mean you have deal whats inside of the () first, after that is done, you are not concern with it any more, it turns into a multiplication symbol.
Hmm I take full on Calc classes (btw I've aced every math class) I'm not the one to test on this one lol You don't want me to post some moderately difficult calc on here. Listen and you might learn something. The answer is two. That's the bottom line. The example I gave you on how to input it into the calculator is the correct method. I've been doing this for quite some time now.
How far did you get in math. Not very far right? lol
Alex, I think Sakem has me on ignore.
If possible can you quote my reply to this dumb ignorant ass.
