this was a psych evaluation, not a math test.
i've determined that all you muthafuckas are crazy.

thank you for your participation.

Notice that most of the people who came up with 288 don't feel the need to address people as idiots. Your emotion over this subject is only further proof that you are not thinking logically.

A calculator, unlike you, knows the rules including the order of operations. I'm using a TI-89 not an 83.

Post a credible source that backs up your claims.

The calculator is not Simplifying which is what you have to do with this equation..

The answer is 2 nigga, so you might as well pay up now. I'll give you my Paypal Email as well...

Simplify 16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5.

16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5
= 16 – 3(5)2 ÷ 5
= 16 – 3(25) ÷ 5
= 16 – 75 ÷ 5
= 16 – 15
= 1

That's a different problem. The 2 is an exponent. You do that before the multiplication and division. Also it still went from left to right where the multiplication was on the left and the division was on the right. In our problem the division is first followed by the multiplication.

You entered it wrong. Re-enter it properly. Ur telling the calculator 48/2 times 24 That's wrong. Until you realize that, you will be a loser in this society unless you hit the lottery.

Method 2: B O D M A S
The letters in the word BODMAS stand for various operations.

B - Stands for Bracket.
O - Stands for "OF" or "Orders" (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
D - Stands for Division.
M - Stands for Multiplication.
A - Stands for Addition.
S - Stands for Subtraction

* Example 1:
40 - 2(2+3)
Correct : 40 - 2(5) = 40 - 10 = 30
Incorrect: 40 - 2(5) = 38(5) = 190
When there are two or more parenthesis, grouping symbols, you perform the inner most grouping symbol first.

again the answer is 2

The sample has subtraction in it which is @ the bottom of the order, our problem has division in it as well as multiplication WHICH ARE VIEWED THE SAME so you proceed from left to right.

B.O.D.M.A.S aka B.O.M.D.A.S., just so you know.

the equation as written 48÷2(9+3) = 2:

this is not the same as
MSP272219f3g25e1718ddc8000055haf9di76f57ae2

this^ would be written as (48/2)(9+3) and it would = 288

The poster above you made is clear to me what they are doing. They seem to think the 2(9+3) is evaluated first instead of just (9+3).

Wherever they went to school, it wasn't explained to them that 2(9+3) is the same as 2 * (9+3).

Personally, I say fuck 'em. The world needs dishwashers! I graduated from high school (and college for that matter) a couple of decades ago. If I remember that shit, it ought to be fresh in the minds of these young bucks.

The 2 belongs to the Parenthesis since there is nothing in between them.

The reason 2(5) came before 40-2 is because multiplication comes before subtraction, not because the 2 was attached to parenthesis.

Simplify 16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5.

16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5
= 16 – 3(5)2 ÷ 5
= 16 – 3(25) ÷ 5
= 16 – 75 ÷ 5
= 16 – 15
= 1

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops2.htm

The way you have it written is not the same way on the link you provided. On the link its written as the following....

16 – 3(8 – 3)^2 ÷ 5 not 16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5

WHAT???:confused::confused::smh::confused::confused:

The problem is entered EXACTLY as it is here!!!

What are YOU looking @?

The calculator is not Simplifying which is what you have to do with this equation..

You never have to simplify an equation in order to solve it, simplifying it just makes it more............simple for a person to calculate. A calculator doesn't need to simplify it.

I put 48/2(9+3) in and got 288 out. If the 2 was suppose to belong to the parenthesis, don't you think the people who programmed the calculator would have remembered to do that?

dude you know how hard it is to find similar examples?!! i know there is a subtraction but the rule i pointed out earlier still exists in this example the 2 is next to the () not separate so the 2 was multiplied by the () first, then the order resumed. in the equation as written the 2 belongs to the (). it has to be solved first then the order of operations resumes.

Please (parentheses)
Excuse (exponents)
My (multiplication)
Dear (division)
Aunt (addition)
Sally (subtraction)

the answer is 2 and no I did not read pages 1-13 :D

:lol::lol::lol:

This isn't analogous to the original problem because the operators outside of the parenthesis are multiplication and subtraction. There is a clear hierarchy that even a monkey like you can understand.

In the original problem, the operators were multiplication and division, which are hierarchically equal. All you have to do is go from left to right... which proved too difficult for most of you geniuses. :roflmao3::roflmao2:

How did you quote this before he posted it.

Hmmmmm distribute the 2 to 9 and 3 . U get 18+6 which is 24. 48/24=2

Those rules are right, but you don't seem to be able to follow them. Parentheses refers to what's inside the grouping symbols. In 2(9+3) only the 9+3 has the highest operational hierarchy. A 2(9+3) merely means 2 x (9+3).

288

I copy and pasted and it came out 2 when it was supposed to be ^2.

No they wouldnt. A calculator doesnt recognize the Simplification.

and then what comes first? multiplication or division? what is 48 divided by 2*12???? :roflmao: been doing this since 5th grade. the answer is 2. Sorry charlie.
