31 Stunning Images of Chicago

never been. But from what I gather it has everything that make New Yorkers rave about NY(culture, great food, music, architecture, mixing pot of people, professional sports) so I am not sure why it is considered second city status.

Although the violence is making it see like Russia or Baghdad

i've never been to chicago either, but i plan to make it to the jazz fest this year.

from what i understand, chicago is a GREAT food & culture city and as far as violence, i'm from NOLa... it can't be worst than there. no way.:smh:

NOLa city motto: "concealed weapons. don't worry, if you don't have one, the police will put one on your dead body."

Same thing living in NY...NY'ers don't do that sight seeing shit and they don't realize the city got a lot of nice places to go. Tourist from all over take those sight seeing tours

Props!

Chicago is surely a beautiful city.

We got hella issues....but the good has always outweighed the bad. Its a shame that people are so scared when they come here. Most of em do nothing but hang in the loop. Chicago is much more than just the loop. Scary mofo's are only hanging around the downtown areas getting overcharged for damn near everything all while missing out on the rest of what we have to offer.

Once Amazon stops bs'n and sends me my new cam then i plan to take some pics this summer...from both the good and bad areas. Ill post them on bgol if I can.

I came to the Chi for the 1st time as an adult just to hang out and I wanted to do more than just see downtown. My cousin that lives there didn't even really want to take me anywhere outside of downtown because he said it was too dangerous. That was 2 years ago, when they shut down the fireworks at Taste Fest because of a stabbing or shooting or something.

I'm interested in knowing what else there is to do in the Chi. I think it's a beautiful city, but downtown & Navy Pier gets old pretty quick.

I plan on coming back to NY this summer too, used to visit fam in Far Rockaway every summer as a kid, haven't been since I was about 14. I wanna come when Brooklyn has one of those big Art/Cultural fairs I always see in the movies...I wanna meet some of the earthy NY chicks that live in a apartment with no A/C, just wanna smoke a joints and let me rub ice on her nipples.

See....this is what I mean. They didnt cancel the firework show because of violence...they canceled it because of the recession. We couldnt afford to do the firework show because of our budget issues.

As for your cousin.....with all due respect....he may live in the Chi but I can tell that he doesnt get out the hood much. He didnt want to take you out of the downtown area because he didnt know where else to take you. The people in the Chi that I know that think like your cuz are the same one's that basically just go from hood to hood...front porch to front porch. Hence all they see is ghetto shit...so in their minds thats all that there is.

As for the violence...like I always say...its isolated. A lot, but not all of the people thats involved in some sort of violence in Chicago were involved because of their lifestyles or because of the people that they hung with. Trust me! Innocent bystanders may get caught in the crossfire every now and then....but it rare. Usually the intended target is hit.

I was born in the 80's and grew up in Chicago during the early - late 90's. The 90's were our worst years. That's when we were actually the murder capital. Chicago still got some rough spots....but 2012 Chicago is no where near the Chicago from back in the 90's.

I know Chicago like the back of my hand. I know about damn near every gang and where theyre located. And If im in an area whereas i dont know whats up...I can easily find out.

You dont have to be paranoid when you come here....just be observant and youll be aight.

Anyways.....
If you come its best to come in the summer. Chicago is pretty much dead if the weather aint nice. During the summer you can actually leave the downtown area and find something to do.

It was 2010 when I came down there and they shut the works down, I think they only shut down one night.

As for my cuz, I know he grew up deep in the hood, hell half my fam my age from the Chi are locked up or have been due to the streets. He says he didn't want me to get a negative view on Chicago cuz it was my 1st time there.

Either way, I'm just looking for something different to do in the Chi besides the Cheesecake Factory.

I'll be down there for Taste Fest again this summer.

This one picture looks really familiar...

I'm in chicago right now for a conference but I'm trying to find something to get into tonight. Amy suggestions from the locals? I'm staying downtown, close to N. Michigan but I want to see more of the city.

so what else to check out besides the downtown and loop area?

Mississippi with buildings!

Dude seriously? Someone from VA crackin on the Chi? Ain't that kinda like being the tallest midget?

I have several co-workers who are recent transplants from other cities that I had to play tour guide for after hearing them complain about nothing to do here. Really? Those from here will co-sign this... ever driven West on Washington Blvd towards Garfield Park during the early mornings right after day break? The Golden Dome is beautiful in how it glows in the morning sunlight. Did you know that one of the best arboriums/farmer's markets in the city is on the westside on Central Park? And the summer baseball leagues in Jackson Park? Better than going to Wrigley (and its free) All summer there is free dancing in grant park...swing, steppers, waltz, foxtrot (anyone over 40 here had to learn those in HS) A taste of italy on Randolph...Bluesfest...Ravinia...Venetian Nights...hell I could go on and on:)

HEAR HEAR!!!

My wife and I have recently started taking our kids out around the city teaching them about where they live. It started when back in Feb the local PBS station was airing a special video tour about the history of the city. Some of that turn of the century architecture still exists in Washington Park and the Kenwood area. As for art, Chi some world class museums (there are wax sculptures in the Field Museum). We are planning on spending a day at each museum including the art institute every couple weeks through the end of summer. A stay-cation doesn't have to be boring :-)

Bump for the afternoon crowd. I'm in Chicago this week (I'm flying out tomorrow )and am looking for shit to do tonight. Everyone keeps taking about places near Hubbard and Division. Whats good for today in chi-town?
