2025 New Year's Resolutions - post em if you got em

Sustainability is my goal for 2026.

There will be a lot of changes in my life coming up this year, and I must figure out how to sustain.

This includes finances, physical health, relationships with people, job stability, etc…

Forgiveness.

I want to try my best to let any slights real or imagined go.

I ain't got no problems with nobody online or off.

We don't have to be friends

but it doesn't have to be contentious or petty or sneak disses or a physical altercation.

I'm seeking peace of mind in everything and anything.

Funny that you brought that up.

I can forgive, but I can’t forget. And once I lose trust, then it’s all the way over.

I also realized that there are levels of how much I don’t trust people.

My distrust in one person actually affects the people around them, to the point I don’t trust them either because of association.

Why you think I made it my resolution?

We Black Vulcans never forget.

But I feel like I have to be BETTER.

no matter what I may think or feel?

Its STILL wasted energy.

I got dudes on bgol I dont mess with it and honestly I cannot remember why?

I have people who did me wrong and now I'm not cool with their kids off that?

I can't associate myself with some type of generational beef (if I can help it).

Justified or not.

I'm going to at least make the EFFORT so my conscience is at least clear if it never actually materializes.

Why breaking your New Year’s resolution might be the smartest move you make

Therapists call this strategy "paradoxical intent"—and it works.

Every year I see it.

They come into the gym, with their new neon yoga pants, their Under Armour shirts, with fresh shoes that still squeak on the ground when they walk. Their posture reflects that of hope and motivation.

They get on the treadmill, turn up the speed slowly, then get impatient and jog so fast that their faces turn cherry red. They stop and lean over the treadmill, as the belt flies beneath them and they feel the lactic acid building up too quickly.

Then — I see the doubt in their faces. The private negotiation begins.

“Do I really need to be here?”

“I was supposed to do 20 minutes. Maybe I’ll just do 11 instead.”

“Maybe I can just improve my diet instead.”

Then, they silence those doubts. But each iteration, the doubts get louder, and eventually — I stop seeing them at the gym entirely.

Americans have proven woefully ill-prepared to follow through on their New Year’s Resolutions. Per a 2023 survey, less than 10% of Americans fulfill their goals. I found other surveys showing slightly better results, but only slightly.

Perhaps it is time for a change in approach.

Why you should intentionally violate your resolution

There is value in violating your New Year’s goal more intentionally, as opposed to surrendering to it.

It is called paradoxical intent and is used frequently in many behavioral treatments

Famed psychiatrist, Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, used paradoxical intent when treating patients with anxiety disorders and deep fears. He invited patients to actively engage and manifest things they feared most, trying to induce the panic attack they were so afraid of. And, paradoxically, it reduced anticipatory anxiety and broke the fear loop.

With insomnia patients, doctors often task patients with intentionally staying up later. In the end, it actually helps them sleep better and more fully.

Why? Because it shifts their intent away from forcing sleep and removes the pressure. It also reduces anxiety around feeling like you can’t sleep, and thereby helps them sleep better.

I’ve found this same thing happens when I needed to wake up earlier than usual. My fear of not being able to sleep, and of being tired the next day, only exacerbates the problem. Yet when I just let go of those thoughts, I pass out like I’ve been hit by a tranquilizer dart.

With New Year’s resolutions, painfully similar things can happen. By becoming obsessed with a goal, we can fall into the trap of avoiding it, almost like a student does with homework and procrastination. The pressure of achieving makes many of us look away and do other things.

Insideoutmastery

Insideoutmastery
(Insideoutmastery)

One paradoxical intent strategy to use

Give yourself a get-out-of-jail free card. It’s a hall pass to skip one of your mandated workouts the following week, at your choosing. It is always available. And you can burn it when you want.

As a personal trainer, I tried this with several clients and they found it immensely helpful. It took the pressure off of them with the prescribed workouts I’d given. It also allowed them to feel more in control of their lives. So that when they did burn their skip card, it didn’t feel quite as bad, like they were losing momentum as a whole with their goals.

It also helps people avoid what I’ve called the Spiraling Effect. Often, when a person fails to meet a daily or weekly goal, they’ll see that as evidence of their own lack of willpower or failure. They’ll spiral downwards from there — eventually losing out on their goal.

Ideally, one should move away from using skip cards every week and try to embrace a plan wholeheartedly. But it can be a great way to help start.

A parting warning

No, this approach won’t work for all resolutions. If you are trying to quit smoking, I certainly wouldn’t encourage you to go smoke a cigarette to help you quit smoking, or do so with any addiction. These problems can be quite complex and multifaceted, and may need expert guidance.

Paradoxical intent, and the intentional violation of your New Year’s Resolution in controlled settings — can be a fantastic way to help revitalize your goals, reduce pressure, and avoid the feelings of powerlessness that often occur.

I would encourage people to develop systems and practices that help bake these changes into their lifestyle. Betting all your chips on a goal made on a singular day, isn’t the most efficient way of operating. Do everything you can to reduce mental and physical friction between you and achieving your resolution — even if that means intentionally violating it.

And if you are seeing this and your goal is to get in shape and go to the gym more, let this article be your prompt to put on your workout shoes and go. Use that get-out-of-jail card another day

Ok, I get it.

Goals shouldn’t feel like pressure. The idea here is to develop better habits and patterns, while reframing how you think about reaching those goals.

For example, people who are afraid to fail, has likely never experienced failure. So when failure looms, they get stressed or anxious. Instead, I reframe failure a a signal or data that can utilized to help. Or even encourage that failing something intentionally may be the best course of action.

People looking for transformation within themselves also have to break certain habits. A lot of time, it’s reshaping how you think about thinks.

Why you think I made it my resolution?

no matter what I may think or feel?

See, that’s your empathy speaking.

Your greatest character trait can also be your enemy if not careful.

I (we) can always be better, but that doesn’t mean we have to forget the actions of those who we feel will never change. The parting was a necessity to protect your mental space. So it feels trivial after a while because you’ve successfully guarded yourself, and time has allowed those wounds to heal. However, those very same people likely haven’t changed and I (we) don't owe them benefit of our growth.

I had a moment where I was legitimately done wrong, and all I could think about was how others felt. I didn’t allow myself to fully embrace my emotions, and found myself in a mental paradox.

We don't have to be friends

but it doesn't have to be contentious or petty or sneak disses or a physical altercation.

That's it for me. I got folks shook when I shook hands with them yesterday. The wife asked if I was good. In the past, I would keep 100 ft away from those folks at all times, even kids could sense the tension.
Like you said, I don't want to be friends but I want to feel lighter when I see those folks.

Respect

That is not easy at all and is very commendable

Happy new year to you and family.

I lack the proper skills to respond to that because its complete valid and honest.

TIP- ;)

Dont fall into the trap of trying to make resolutions this time of year.

Make your resolutions in the spring...that is when a new cycle begins.

If you need a date because you are like that...choose March 20th.

March is the real first month of the year.

My New Year resolution is simple. Stop giving a fuck if somebody does not like my opinion. Its a lot of power in not giving a fuck about a person opinion yourself. Look for likeminded people and don't worry about the rest.

the OLDER I get I understand this, And with this modern society I also get it.

But the YOUNGER me would have pushback against that idea. You don't want to be only surrounded by people who think like you - you want (need?) to be challenged.

But I don't know if that is possible NOW

we are not HONEST, everything is created to target our worst impulses, so much dishonesty and misinformation.

I think PROTECTING AND PERSERVING YOUR PEACE is much more important.

So now I tend to agree and think you are making a wise decision.

I hear you about thoughts being challenged which is excellent but their opinions about ME at the end of the day does not matter. I fully believe in protecting your peace. I also hate this thing in the Black community about having a small circle because I believe the smaller the circle, the easier to attack it or be vulnerable to bad situations which we all will have eventually. This a great conversation and one of the things I am getting better at.

My main NY resolution:
Going to try to go around town and see more areas of Toronto.. still haven't quite gotten used to living in a new city

Also to focus more on education (game art/design wise)
