Rolando McClain retired at the age of 23. He's hoping to launch a comeback at 24.

The Carroll County Times reported Monday, via a source close to the player, that McClain "is in a better place mentally," is working out regularly and has been telling people for months that he plans to return to football in 2014.

The trouble-prone linebacker signed with the Baltimore Ravens last spring, but retired shortly after an arrest for disorderly conduct. It was McClain's third arrest since entering the league as the eighth overall pick of the Oakland Raiders in the 2010 NFL Draft.

After his retirement, McClain re-enrolled at Alabama and has spent time as a student assistant under Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

"I admire the kid for coming back to Tuscaloosa, going to class and trying to get everything in his life outside of football situated," agent Pat Dye Jr. said last September. "It's not my decision to come back or not come back. I think ultimately he wants to play again. He's only 24 years old. He's talented. It's just a shame. It was such a great situation there in Baltimore."

The Ravens retain McClain's contractual rights, but you wonder if general manager Ozzie Newsome will still be interested during an offseason already marked by legal troubles.

"@ProFootballTalk: Everson Griffen, with one career start, gets $8.5M/year with Vikings. Michael Bennett takes $7.125M/year to stay in Seattle."

With Sam Shields and Brent Grimes off the market, Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl selection Alterraun Verner appears to be the most popular cornerback on the free-agent market.

At least six teams reportedly reached out to Verner's camp when the NFL's "legal tampering" period opened Saturday.

Appearing on SiriusXM's "Mad Dog Radio" on Monday, Verner said he expects to sign quickly -- and added a pair of AFC contenders to his wish list.

Already connected to the New York Giants and Jets, Verner said the Denver Broncos "would definitely be a good situation for me" and the New England Patriots are "definitely a possibility."

We suspect Verner would only be a fallback option for both teams, in case Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Aqib Talib sign elsewhere.

Verner has enough interest that he won't take any visits before signing. In addition to the teams mentioned above, he's also on the radar of the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams.

The 25-year-old insists respect and a winning culture rank high with money on his list of priorities.

"I would feel more obliged to go to a team that paid me $6 (million) or $7 (million) and made me one of the highest-paid players on the team," Verner explained, "than go to a team that paid me $8 (million) or $9 million and I wasn't one of the highest-paid players on the team."

It's an interesting sentiment that runs counter to the intuition of most players who relish the prospect of at least one big payday from a game which offers no promises of future financial security.

It will also ring hollow if Verner signs with the highest bidder Tuesday.

The #Panthers are attempting to trade WR Steve Smith, per source. Given his $7M cap number and age (34), seems unlikely.

Defensive ends getting deals like that Ware damn sure ain't taking a pay cut

He probably asked Jerry to cut him RIGHT NOW

I'm saying tho........lol......probably can fuck around and get a raise an shit. Jerry better sit his ass down somewhere an eat that shit....

"@AdamSchefter: Bears calling around the league, seeing if they can find a trade partner for DE Julius Peppers, per sources. Trade unlikely..."

Peppers, Steve Smith.....its gonna be a lot of ex-Pro Bowlers cut this offseason I can see. Nobody taking on them big money contracts these teams signed them too. Not at this point in their career but you can damn sure bet they'll have people try and sign them when they hit free agency.

Damn......Antonio Cromartie got cut........dude just played in the Pro Bowl 6 weeks ago. That's a damn good find for a team that can afford his services for the right money.

Right cuz that DE market ain't like last year I see that now

We missed that train

Now you gotta pay these niggas

I wonder who the hell Cam Newton is going to throw to......

He is the ONLY good WR on that roster

 Yeah I think its more that contract than it is him though. That position already needed upgrading.....but shit with their track record I can't even trust their evaluation on receivers if they decide to get rid of Smith and draft a few in the draft.

They can't expect to go to free agency and sign someone because chances are its going to be someone like Steve Smith that's out there for them to sign. But I guess if its a cheaper Steve Smith they'd be down for it.

I feel the same way about the Jets.....Cromoratie is their best corner and still in his late 20's.....and he got 20 kids so you know he gonna be hungry to contribute. Steve Smith I sort of get but it does seem odd. But Cromartie...I don't at all. Jets went from the best corners tandem in the league to having neither one of them.

 All it took was one offseason for them dudes to go from underpaid to overpaid. Damn....yeah we def. did miss that bus.

I wonder who the hell Cam Newton is going to throw to......

Shit man I guess last on their legs Stewart and Deangelo if neither one of them gets cut but they need to move on from both. That offense was already bad...its gonna be dinking and dunking to running backs and Olsen again next season with Cam running for the first down.

I wonder who the hell Cam Newton is going to throw to......

Lucky for them the Wide receiver class is deep in this draft..

Still sucks that the franchises best player is getting kicked to the curb, just as their franchise QB is heading into his prime..not a panthers fan but he's been one of my favourite players for awhile

Carlos Rogers GONE :yes::yes:

Immediately puts us at $15 million under the cap.

He was good for it in year 1 and 2 but this year 80% of the throws to him were completed. it was a nice run but PEACE

Safety Louis Delmas agrees to terms with the Dolphins. Max deal of $3.5 million for one year.

What the fuck? Them niggas trippin' but props to them dudes.....

I know the NFL, as so eloquently put by Jerry Glanville, means not for long but bad teams Austin over pay to get players to come too or stay in that city.they essentially sign for equal money. Free agency is a gamble not just for the teams but for the players. When you take a lot of money to go to a new spot you don't know if it's going to work out there. My friend Antwan is famous for saying,"all money isn't good money." and many times taking that free agent dollar gets you cut in a couple years, and in the NFL where there is no guaranteed contracts you have to consider that

I dont know how I feel about this...last season I wanted him on the team, but after saying Incognito was a good guy...Im like fuck him...:hmm::hmm:

Eric Decker about to get paid to be a super bust. he is not a number 1 and some team will find out the hard way. He will be the next TJ Hous...

You know what??? That comparison is spot on, crisp route runners but lack the speed to go deep without a top tier we opposite them.

I'm mad as fuck my cowboys let Delmas get got for that low ass price. We gotta make a run at one of these dt's tho, I'd be happy with Randy Starks and that dt Dobson in the draft. Cut ware, Austin, resign cost as on the low and sign some hungry ends.

And for the love of God jerry sign Kuhn!!!!!!!!

He was the 4th option on the team, last season and yet he's asking for #1 money....He need to sit his ass down somewhere, but like you said some sucker will over pay him...:lol::lol::lol:

@NFL_ATL: Per @AlbertBreer, Decker told friends a handful of teams are looking at him and the Colts are one of them.-

that seems awfully low. He's a talented guy although injury prone and I thought that he would go for more money than that.

cosine twice Eric Decker is overrated and he's barely a number 3 option on any team. Some force app team is going to find out that he is not worth more than 6 million a year...if even that much. I am predicting now he will be cut in 3 years or less. Please don't let the Browns be that stupid team
