STEIN: SPURS, HEAT IN LEAD FOR GREG ODEN
Written by Trevor Zickgraf on Tuesday, 02 July 2013 10:42.

There's been seemingly little movement on the Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter fronts, but that doesn't mean the San Antonio Spurs have been idle in the first few days of free agency.* A day after reports indicated the Spurs were one of several teams interested in Greg Oden, ESPN's Marc Stein says the Spurs and Miami Heat are the frontrunners for the former number one pick.

It's easy to see the appeal in all three teams.* Cleveland is close to Columbus, where he's spent most of his time over the last year and change.* Miami has you know, the two-time defending champions and the best player on the planet.* The Spurs have the best coach on the planet, a big man in Tim Duncan that could teach Oden a thing or seven and would also get Oden out of the spotlight a bit, and we've learned that Oden isn't a huge fan of being the center of attention.* So maybe the Spurs have the upper hand there, but who knows.

Lakers release statement saying they’ve been informed of Dwight Howard’s decision to join the Rockets

Now, it’s over.

After a brief period of reported indecision (that may have not included any actual indecisiveness), Dwight Howard has informed the Lakers of his decision to sign with the Houston Rockets.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak issued the following statement via the team’s website:

“We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers. Naturally we’re disappointed. However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great lakers fans will be proud to support. To Dwight, we thank him for his time and consideration, and for his efforts with us last season. We wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his NBA career.”

The reports that had Howard waffling on the earlier decision were obviously false, and the plan all along seemed to be for Dwight to meet with the Lakers one last time to inform them personally of his final choice.

Re: ~**~2013 NBA Offseason Thread - Free Agency begin July 1~**~

Lets revisit that 2012 offseason trade...
(moves made 2013 offseason)

The deal is as follows:
Lakers get Dwight Howard, Orlando point guard Chris Duhon (two years, $6.5 million remaining) and Magic forward Earl Clark
(Dwight left to join the Rockets, Earl Clark signed elsewhere, Duhon likely cut)

-Orlando gets Denver guard Arron Afflalo, Denver forward Al Harrington, Philadelphia small forward Moe Harkless, Philadelphia center Nikola Vucevic, Lakers forward Josh McRoberts, Lakers small forward Christian Eyenga, three future first-round picks (a lottery-protected from the Sixers in 2015, the lower of Denver's two first-rounders in 2014 and the Lakers' 2017 first-rounder) and two second-round picks (from Denver in 2013 and a conditional second-rounder from the Lakers in 2015)

-Philadelphia gets Lakers center Andrew Bynum and Orlando guard Jason Richardson
(Andrew likely to move on)

-Denver gets Sixers forward Andre Iguodala.
(Andre Iguodala signed with Golden State)

You may be right. I do think Cuban did try and get those guys but I also think he knew he wouldn't get them if that makes any sense. But if he didn't want to pay the new luxury tax why take on any contracts at all? Especially giving Calderon that money?

Cuban has no interest of having a competitive team out there. He's all about avoiding the luxury tax.

Calderon only getting 7 a year, we had 4 guys on payroll. He had to pay someone & keep in mind, JC is a Carlisle kinda guy: vet w/ a high basketball IQ who doesn't turnover the ball.

As Killa pointed out when he said it, remember last years all star game....Cuban said 3 things:

1. He wish he would've fought harder against the new CBA
2. He said he didn't want to pay the offenders tax
3. He said based on the new penalties that it makes sense to wait to 2014 to get active in the free agent market, maybe even 2015.

Jennings isn't a Carlisle kinda player, that shit would never work.

Re: ~**~2013 NBA Offseason Thread - Free Agency begin July 1~**~

Good point, Mav have to pay someone and Jose is well deserving, even tho it surprised me. Perfect pg to run the team, can hit the outside shot, assist to turnover ratio is always great...

Re: ~**~2013 NBA Offseason Thread - Free Agency begin July 1~**~

The next lockout the large market owners will fight for that old cap and rules

We might not see nba till the Allstar break

Re: ~**~2013 NBA Offseason Thread - Free Agency begin July 1~**~

Yea the owner are a mess

It makes perfect sense

He went after them fully knowing he wasn't getting them

He knew he wasnt getting them

No way that I knew we weren't getting a star and our front office didn't

Cuban has no interest of having a competitive team out there. He's all about avoiding the luxury tax.

Exactly

Gotta get the old cap back

My team is useless without it

Houston needs to try to get Anderson from the Pelicans to put at the 4 with Howard. Asik with Anthony Davis will help their front line & we know what Anderson did while playing with Dwight in Orlando.
