HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Officials have confirmed that two Hattiesburg police officers were shot downtown on Saturday evening.

The two officers that were killed were identified as Benjamin J. Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 25. According to the Forrest County Coroner, their bodies will be transported to Jackson for autopsy.

The suspects have been identified as Curtis Banks and Marvin Banks.

Both Curtis and Marvin have Hattiesburg addresses, and live near the scene of the shooting. Both suspects also have prior records as offenders in the city of Hattiesburg. HPD has issued warrants for their arrests.

Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict confirmed both officers died because of injuries sustained in the shooting. Both officers were transported from the scene to Forrest General Hospital.

According to officials, the officers were shot after an incident on Gordon Street.

According to officials, the suspect fled the scene in an officer's vehicle. It has since been found abandoned near the rail road tracks behind the train depot.

Multiple agencies are conducting a man hunt in the area.

The crime scene has been expanded, and it is blocking off Gordon Street at the Bouie Street intersection.

WDAM Reporter Ryan Moore is currently on scene with officials. More details will be released as soon as they are made available.

Before I fully judge the suspects, I'll wait until an impartial investigation is thoroughly done as to what led to the fatalities of those officers.

We certainly should not rush to judgment. Those 'suspects' could very well have feared for their lives, especially if the officer were running away in the opposite direction at the time they were shot.
