It sounds like something out of a movie. But the fact is each and every one of those scenes is part of the real-life drama we uncovered during our six-month 48 Hours special investigation, "The War in Chicago," airing Saturday night.

Sneak peek: The War in Chicago

As correspondent Maureen Maher and I discovered, the war is a drug war played out on the streets of America's third largest city. It involves the Holy Trinity of Trouble -- guns, gangs and drugs -- tied to Mexico's ruthless Sinaloa cartel battling over Chicago's booming heroin trade. That is not an easy sentence to write. But it's all too true, according to a man who would know. That man is Jack Riley, a 28-year veteran of the Drug Enforcement Administration and head of the DEA's Chicago office and five surrounding states. He's a man devoted - obsessed - with taking back certain drug-riddled sections of his hometown.

Riley is straight out of central casting. A modern-day Elliott Ness, he's fighting a modern-day Al Capone in the form of Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa cartel.

As part of our report, we shadowed Riley and his DEA-led "Strike Force" as they raided suspected heroin houses and took down crooked cops from a suburban police department. Riley is hardly the only real-life hero in our hour. Sadly, tragically, Anthony and Cleopatra Pendelton are as well. Somehow, in the wake of the senseless murder of their beautiful teenage daughter Hidiya - who came to symbolize the indiscriminate drug violence infecting the city - the Pendletons displayed unimaginable strength and grace in their interviews with Maher and the hours we spent with them behind the scenes.

David Muhammad is another hero. Instead of giving up when heroin dealers opened shop right outside his house, Muhammad fought back. Not with his fists...but rather a small digital camera. For months he videotaped the drug sales on the street outside his door - then posted them on YouTube at great threat to his life.

"David, I hate to be blunt about this," I told him at one point in our interview, "but one of these guys could just walk right up to you and say, 'You know what, it's over' and put a bullet in your head."

"If it's meant for me to leave here like that, I'll leave," said Muhammad.

Instead, he's still there. Still making a difference.

In the end, we hope the same can be said of "The War in Chicago."

In a few years i knew of someone who helped clean up their little few blocks. In all those years he only had 1 incident with kids trying to jump bad and only 1 of those kids pulled a weapon. Which he promptly took from them and with help proceeded to whip their asses. Kids aren't going to jump bad against a GROUP OF GROWN MEN. Kids are still KIDS. They play tough because they think that's what they should do. But it ain't in the vast majority of them.

As for the psychic detox. You're eye to eye with me on THAT. I love when the men i knew would take the kids on camping trips. When 1 of the boys in the neighborhood would get up to some trouble, the men would talk to the child.

To fix the economics? This is what i say when i speak of creating our OWN field of play. You need to buy up the land in your commnity. Change the land in your community. Get control of your communities, JUST like the asians, jews, and the other whites do. The people of the community need to buy those stores. Shops. The people of the community need to get themselves together and make community land a priority. The business owners, Black business owners of the community need to HIRE people from the same community. The businesses we own, the ones that are closer to where we live, we hire from our community, or hire off recommendations from the people.

I'm NOW just NOW. Becoming part of a group here in this area who're focused and concentrated on their communities just like we are. You gotta fix it... area by area. Get the kids off the negatives, and give them work. Some of the men i knew would take active roles in these kids lives. One of them if he was driving around and saw one of the teens on the street (who he'd won the respect of) saw 1 on the street would stop his car and ask the youngster what he was up too. Where was he headed? Why wasn't he with his kid? Why wasn't he working?

Policing your own means just that. Policing your damn own. You're going to understand and love these little knuckleheads and be compassionate to them and UNDERSTAND them 10,000x's more than the POLICE will. The job of the police is to put you and our young in prison for free labor.

Those of you who do trades. Why don't you take these youngsters and teach them your trade? What happened to taking an apprentice? Holding classes at the local Centers? Basketball Leagues? Just having an open door for these kids?

Yeah it's a risk, but shit we SEE what the alternative is.

I was speaking to those in, around the area. I'm not saying you guys from Atl hop planes and fly out there. Although......... MAN how beautiful would THAT shit be. Do my heart so proud. Anyway. I wasn't speaking of you guys. Although you guys have your own communities to police as well. it's not like shit is rosey in Atl, Detroit, Cleveland, Dallas. I answered the police question in my other post. I agree it SHOULD start with the parents. And where i'm from the experience i've had, is the parents(mothers) themselves are drenched in HOPELESSNESS. When i worked for the county, if i had a dime for every time i heard "Well i wish i could do something with him/her i just don't know what else to do..." Man i'd be able to buy that island i want so bad. Hopelessness. They need to stand up and be ready to fight and sacrifice. But it takes a village.
