Real good info it's to the point where opening your business, having side hustles or just aquiring new skills is a must. Black folks need to improve our lot in this life. Shit is getting real bad for cacs so you know how it will be for US :smh:

My Co-workers at my day job laugh and shake their head atty me when I call our job dead end with no chance for advancement, my supervisor looked shook when I asked him where does my position lead to I've been running my own small security business for 7 years now, even been offered buy outs by larger companies at one point lol funny thing is I've out lasted those companies people keep looking for the over night, it didn't happen now i'm 2 months away from my degree and people are throwing offers at my feet bring your own boss = the ultimate high

Things have been good here. Been in the field since late-2002 / early-2003, and with the main employer since April 2004. No complaints. Only saw the manager twice in 2012. Coworkers are decent. Minimal stress at the job. Pay is appropriate. Benefits are on point. Got 2 back-up side gigs that I've had since 2004. I just keep those as an "in case ..." as they're with separate unions & organizations. Got about 4000+ hours at one place, and about 2200 hours at the other ... while the main employer ... did oncall and PT work when I was younger, and FT thereafter ... so probably around 15 - 17,000 hours. If things ever go awry with full-time job A ... I've got my foot already in the door with B & C as I've hustled hard throughout the 2000s and was working like a fucking fool in my early- and mid-20s. Finances are in check. I also like the fact that the main employer compensates you well. You work 8 hours ... get paid for the full 8. Work 12 ... get paid for the full 12. Shit's well-run and structured too. No assholes in admin'. Executive director and managers are fair, etc.

Definitely gotta have side hustles. Even just little things. Everything helps out. I used to joke with friends about being a kid and having 2 newspaper routes, and working as a delivery person at the pharmacy. Shit ... from ages 14 - 21 I was doing indepdendent landscaping and yardworking jobs in the neighbourhood and surrounding cities. Borrow the family vehicle ... and do the jobs every couple of weeks for the customers. There's nothing better than being a teenager and setting your OWN RATE(S) with customers who appreciated your work ... and getting $15 - 25 per hour cash. Hell ... I went to work for a REAL LANDSCAPER when I was 16yo ... did a summer of that. Way harder work. We had 5 - 6 clients on 1 block. Serious jobs. I was getting paid $7 - 7.50. Shit ... 2 years before that on my own I was getting 2 - 3 or more times that $$$-wise. $15 - 25 an hour cash as a teenager is the fucking truth (and you get your workout in too).

Why do people act like working for yourself is easy and the only way? If it were everybody would be doing it.
U kinda missed what he was sayin. He did'nt say it was easy or the only way. He also stated everybody ain't gon do it. The masses will allways be slaves. Those who want more will do more tho. He's saying it used to be that the "easy" way was to get a job but that dream is over now cuz the jobs are being eradicated and so is the middle class.

Agreed.

I had a online business last year but I shut it down due to unique reasons. I'm thinking of starting it back up but either way, at my job, the people are really too comfortable. I'm always trying to get them to look for other jobs, keep their eyes open, go back to school, or just learn something new. Nope. I keep my resume online and get calls and emails quite often. I know the definition of the middle class is large and varies based on where you live but I'm doing OK. Close to getting into the upper middle class range. So I know and hope I won't be at my job this year. I'm hoping to get this last certification and find a better position unless I get a similar promotion at my current job.

Who knows. So what did I take from that post?

The same thing I've been doing, keep looking for a better job.

Its already bad. I was talking to this old black lady the other day. She's 58 and already has a good paying job. Then she says she just got a part time job working a paper route. I said what? You're suppose to get a paper route at 8, not 58. Her daughter started laughing her ass off. Yeah. It was funny. But sad at the same time.

Hard timers are coming people. Get ready.

Why do people act like working for yourself is easy and the only way? If it were everybody would be doing it.

It is easy. And everyone should be doing it. Just think if you spent the same amount of time you spend on this board everyday, working a part time hustle. You would easily be able to save up for your retirement.

I really feel sorry for people that think they will be able to put 2 or 3 kids through college, save for retirement, and pay off a mortgage on one jobs salary. And this is assuming you dont have a divorce, drug habit, mistress, etc. Only a fool would do such a thing.

I don't see how these post create anything but false hope. If you aren't creative enough, connected and got some loot already, you're still gonna work for someone and not yourself anyway but even if you have all that you can still fail. I've seen many self man businesses go down hill recently.

Its not easy. You need an idea or talent, even good ideas fail 95% of businesses go under during year 1. It's a myth that you can just go out with no backing, no good idea, no talent and be successful. I ghost produce and produce records on the side, but that ain't enough for steady income, i need to work in an office to survive i'm making 6 figures but live in ca and travel a few times a year to NYC, LA and miami to work on records. Shits hard as fuck living like this but i love it. I just can't afford to live on music solely. It's not the late 90s anymore.

Thank you. This is the first response from a lot of people who have "had enough." But it leads to no where, because they aren't aware of the time and effort it takes to make anything happen. Then they go crawling back to The Man with their proverbial tail between their legs

 Roc-approved post!

Man, you always come in with that damn off the wall humor but it made me think of the white guy at the corner of Northside Dr. and Paces Ferry in Atlanta who has been selling roses at that corner since I moved here to work...and that was in '99. I just saw him two days ago.

Dude I have seen this guy ALL MY LIFE. Went to school in Buckhead and the same dude was there, same corner, doing the same thing for all this time. This dude is a LEGEND and I will forever respect his hustle.

If they can pay for that expensive gas @ that Shell station, they can afford some roses.

1) It's NOT easy, because if it was, everyone would do it. Working out is "easy," but how many people do it? Case closed.

2) This is the thing, stop working trying to put your kids through college (unless they want a true professional career like doctor, lawyer, etc. something that takes specialized education). Teach your kids how to build a business, give people want they want in the form of products or services and build a generation in your family that doesn't need The Man.

You don't need to be connected or have a lot of loot, just a spark, and idea and a willingness to research more about it and TRY. You have to be willing to lose battles but win the war.

^^ this should be shouted from the rafters to parents

Good read.

FUUUUCK a job, ya'll know how many hoops I jump through to get on at a decent company?

I feel you. Even in my field (culinary), I have da skill set & can barely get into any of da kitchens that I really wanna work at. As it is, I've been thinkin' for a while that I'll probably not be given da same opportunities for advancement or da more glam worthy opportunities such as working say, overseas alongside renowned chefs & such unlike "others" in my profession regardless of my skill. :smh:

After reading this, I feel like I've been bullshitted by a con man.

I've been feeling like that for a while now.

:yes::yes::yes:

we are collateral from left over plantation/capitalism

wondering wtf to do with the dregs

damn,
just got off work and once again i see a thread that reflects the exact shhhh i'm going through. Besides a lot of the good responses this quote right here always gets me. I have a vast dvd collection, and it's funny how these big name products like kellogg, proctor and gamble, colgate palmolive, warner bros, johnson & johnson, dupont, firestone and so on sometimes pop up in a movie i'm watching with the time frame from 1 - 200 years ago if not more and the name is still relevant today and has remained a non stop money maker since it's existence. And most on the back bones of slavery, immigration, or some form of forced labor..
Chris rock could not have put it any clearer..

I run an I.M.A.C.-Break/fix IT solutions shop.

while dispatching and supporting techs for someone else
i fixed peoples' machines and asked them to refer me to friends

sell your good or service directly to who needs/wants it.

i've seen people stand in front of Lowe's with a hammer...

as u come home with cash and pay yo bills,

u make the connections, establish the partnerships...

not easy. worth it.

it's not what i heard. it's how i live

And this is our weakness right here.

The lack of networking we do.

We will hang out, play sports together but we will not engage each other in planning a business.

We have to do better.

Gonna be? I assumed they already were! Dinners and rent payments count too.

I'm getting laid of either this or next week.
Already started talking with a partner of mine on some SEO websites and hustles. I'm looking to do a lot of online work instead of interviewing and going into some office with shitty lighting. Still a lot of work to be done but this resonates with me...
