Pack in the mid-90s when I was in junior high I had a paper route.
There was one home on the route that had a chihuahua. Dog would lose its shit anytime someone walked by the house or dropped off mail. Some years later I was about a block away doing another part of the route and here comes the guy (Italian in his 70s) with the dog ... off-leash. The dog spots me and immediately goes nuts and races towards me like a terror. It's around dinner time so the occasional car is driving by, and unfortunately there's a hill to my left which has a blind spot as you ascend and then the road plateaus. Dog darts across the road and gets hit at full speed and sent flying in the air. I'm standing there like ... fuck. Italian starts screaming and crying running to his dog. I stay with him and another neighbor comes out to see what's up. Guy wants to race the dog off to the emergency vet, but realizes the dog is going to die moments later.
All I could think was ... sorry for your dog, but why the fuck did you have it off-leash?
