In July 2003, his family filed a $250,000 CAD lawsuit against the families of four of his schoolmates; legal proceedings against one of them have been dropped. The three current defendants were alleged to have taken the video and put it on the Internet without Raza's consent. The family claimed that Raza had suffered harassment and derision from both his schoolmates and the general public because of the video. The lawsuit was expected to go to trial April 10, 2006, but on April 7, news came out that Raza and his parents reached an out-of-court settlement with the families of the former schoolmates. Terms of the settlement were not announced, but previous proceedings included discussions about whether the defendants had liability insurance.
