‘Birth Of A Nation’ about Nat Turner Slave Revolt Electrifies Sundance Crowd In World Premiere

Ok. Fox Searchlight picked up da film.

Does this mean theyll just distribute/show the film (hopefully) as it was shown at Sundance, or is there still a possibility dat someone can fuck wit it?

Searchlight is going to put together a comprehensive distribution strategy. They may let it show at a few more prestigious festivals to build its buzz like Canne. Then they'll find a release date, could be right on the edge of award season or just before like September. Or it's pretty common for Sundance pick-ups to premiere the following calendar year. Don't know how the amount paid will play into that. There are so set rules, though, and it's all about how they feel about the best way to handle it and what release window will give it the best chance to succeed.

The possibility that it can be fucked with -- i.e. leaked is an industry-wide problem, so there's only so much they can do about that.

I was like, who the hell is John Horse?
No disrespect, but don't you mean John Brown?

John Horse (c. 1812–1882),[1] also known as Juan Caballo, Juan Cavallo, John Cowaya (with spelling variations) andGopher John,[2] was of mixed ancestry (African and Seminole Indian) who fought alongside the Seminoles in the Second Seminole War in Florida. He rose to prominence in the third year of what was to become a seven-year war when the first generation of Black Seminole leaders was largely decimated and the primary Seminole war chief, Osceola (Asi Yahola), fell into the hands of the American military commander, General Thomas Sydney Jesup. John Horse had been fighting alongside Osceola and acting as his interpreter by this time.[3] When they were seized while under a flag of truce[4][5] during negotiations with Jesup's emissary, Florida militia general Joseph Hernandez, John Horse found himself imprisoned along with Osceola and other members of his band at Fort Marion (Castillo de San Marcos),[6] the old Spanish fort that formerly defended St. Augustine, the colonial capital of Spanish Florida.

John Horse gained his initial fame for joining with a Mikasuki brave named Wildcat (Coacoochee), the son of the Mikasuki chief, King Phillip Emathla,[7] in executing a daring escape from the fort[8][9] which, until then, had been believed by American forces to be unbreachable. Wildcat and John Horse formed an alliance and went on to lead the remnants of the shattered Seminole bands, including members of the Mikasuki, Tallahassee, Appalachee and Yamassee bands (many of different ethnic backgrounds in what was by then a highly mixed grouping of Indians and Africans) to safety in the south-central part of Florida, ahead of Jesup's forces.[10] In the Battle of Lake Okeechobee on Christmas Day in 1837, Halpatta Tustanagi (Chief Alligator), an ally of the captured Osceola, and the Seminole medicine man Abiaka (Sam Jones)[11][12] led the escaping Seminole with Wildcat and John Horse playing leading roles in holding off the assault of Zachary Taylor,[13][14] then in hot pursuit.[15]

They successfully effected the escape of most of the fleeing Seminole who had joined with them by crossing Lake Okeechobee to take refuge in the Everglades.[16] They fought Jesup himself on the Loxahatchee River the following January 1838, although the privations and losses they had suffered since their early victories in 1835 and 36 had taken their toll. Although General Jesup was wounded in the fight,[17][18] the Seminole were forced to flee again. Offered a promise of peace and a new life west of the Mississippi with his family, John Horse finally agreed to surrender, although Wildcat refused to come in at that time and fought on until around 1840 when John Horse was brought back to Florida from his exile in Indian Territory. John brought the offer to Wildcat and the man who was by now the leading war chief of the remaining Seminole finally accepted removal to Indian Territory (in present-dayOklahoma) which had been set aside for the eastern Indians in the early 1830s by Congress. Other bands still held out though and the war continued until August 14, 1842, when Colonel William J. Worth, finally declared "victory" and left the remaining fighters to their own devices deep in the Florida Everglades.[19]

John Horse, who was the son of a slave mother and an Indian father,[20] was nominally a slave under both American and Seminole law until finally being freed by the American military for his service to the army in Florida after his return there at the military's request. He was later officially set free of any Seminole claims on his person by Chief Micanopy,[21] titular head of all the Seminole bands, for his service to the Indians. When the Africans living among the Seminole continued to face threats of re-enslavement in their new home, despite Jesup's decree emancipating all surrendering escaped African slaves, thanks to the connivance of some American officials, John Horse would join with his old comrade, Wild Cat, to lead a group of disaffected Seminole and former slaves across the Rio Grande to northern Mexico[22] where they were granted land by the Mexican government in 1850 and where the Seminole blacks could finally be assured of their freedom,[23]Mexico having abolished legal slavery in the 1820s.[24]

Horse served as a captain in the Mexican army during this period and,[25][26][27] after 1870, briefly with the US Army again as a scout.[1][28][29] He disappeared several years later when, by now an old man, he made a trip to Mexico City to plead for reaffirmation of the land grant to his people which local Mexican landowners were seeking to overturn. It is generally thought that John Horse died in the course of this final errand to Mexico City.[30][31]

This is a post

Thanks a million

Won't be spending a dollar to see this. I've read about it enough I'm tired of it.
Youre tired of what??? WE need to see this on the big screen. The younger generation needs to see this KIND of story on the big screen.. I'M tired of seeing movies of the ever suffering black slave with dignity which is something we've seen over and over in stories like Driving Miss Daisy, The Help and 12 Years A Slave.

This is the first story that shows black slaves taking action on their own. By themselves For Themselves not because some nice white person told them to or gave them the idea or was key to their plans. And thats something unprecedented IMO. Its also something that makes ALOT of people uncomfortable. I don't care if the revolt was successful or not I want to see a film that shows black people doing it for themselves win or lose. Thats what Brave heart showed.

The Scottish fought British tyranny for themselves and they LOST and William Wallace was killed, Hell, the film ends with us seeing his torture and execution. But that doesn't matter That man and his people stood up for themselves and fought and they didn't need some English person to help them or give permission that it was okay or defend them against English rule. Brave heart shows those particular white people taking their lives and destiny into their own hands. And if they have to die doing it then so be it. Thats the image and message white people project to themselves and the world all the time. Its the message of 300 and King Leonidas, its the message of Gladiator. White people LOVE movies where theyre seen making a life or death fight against all odds and saying we're willing to kill and die for what we believe. Thats their message to the world

But that same message is something that they are clearly uncomfortable with others doing. Like I said this film seems to be the first of its kind and its going to be interesting seeing how the public accepts it. I'm ALREADY seeing comment sections where people are like "this isn't going to help anything..." or "this is just going cause people to be upset and do something.."

Whites people are acutely aware of the power of the image on the big screen and thats why we've been seeing what we have in the past.

The Martian - super smart white man conquers Mars BY HIMSELF and makes it back home

Geechie your lazy bruh. I'll be damned if I wait on us or them as You call it to educated my younger family members and seeds. Its your responsibility as a parent, uncle, etc to teach Your own kids. What's next you waiting for a black owned toilet paper company to wipe your behind?

I understand it but in my view that's lazy waiting on us to make a movie to tell about our history. That's exactly why we as a whole never get anywhere. We want a feel good hip hop, gospel , Essence fest movement to energize us to get up off of our asses and be responsible for what goes on in our homes.

dude I'm all for personal responsibility but that doesn't negate the FACT that there is a soft power apparatus (entertainment media) employed by cacs to promote themselves as the standard in the country and world wide. And that (as much as you can TRY to deny it) has as much influence on people in general and youth in particular in conditioning them to think and believe what they want...which is whites as the standard to which all others are to be compared.

I was dating this 20 something year old chick 2011-2014.
I said back then that the Academy Awards is bullshit. It is carefully controlled propaganda.
Look at what wins. A maid, a slave, a crook cop, a bed wench whose husband was killed by the man she ended up fucking. Precious was beyond tragic.12 years a slave? Really?
Look at even what gets nominated. Color Purple, Hustle and Flow?
I said to her straight up "Where is the NAT TURNER MOVIE?"
Here it is.
I really hope they don't fuck this up and give too much screen time to black pain. I want some Braveheart shit for real.

I loved that this brotha titled this the same as the movie made in 1915 which to this day is the most racist movie ever made. That's a chess move and a good way to remind folks who don't know how treacherous these cac's were with their propaganda film making.

Sundance: The Math Behind Fox Searchlight’s Record-Shattering ‘Birth of a Nation’ Deal

“The Birth of a Nation” represents a big risk for the studio. The movie is violent and will no doubt be rated R. A traditional independent distributor or mini-major would have to push “The Birth of a Nation” to roughly $26 million at the domestic box office before its ancillary television deals would kick in and the film would be profitable. To break even purely in its theatrical run, most distributors would need the picture to do more than $50 million. For comparison’s sake, many of this year’s award season pictures — like “Brooklyn,” “Room” and “Spotlight” — have yet to cross that threshold.

But Fox Searchlight was able to justify the expenditure because its economics are different. Because it is part of a major studio — 20th Century Fox is its corporate cousin — Searchlight releases appear on HBO. The studio also has foreign television and satellite deals that bring in additional revenue and could lower the break-even point by 25% or more, sources say.

To get the rights, Fox Searchlight agreed to release “The Birth of a Nation” at some point this year on at least 1,500 screens, Variety has learned. That wide a release can require spending as much as $15 million on promotion and advertising. Again, however, Fox Searchlight executives believed that they might be able to save on some of the spending. News of the historic nature of the deal has resulted in extensive media coverage that has raised awareness. A release date hasn’t even been decided on, but the story of the film and Parker’s drive to make the picture have been picked up by most major news outlets — a rarity for Sundance releases.

“The Birth of a Nation” could also tap into the under-represented African American audience, a powerful buying block that helped churn out such hits as “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Django Unchained.” “12 Years a Slave,” another Fox Searchlight release about slavery in the antebellum South, won a Best Picture Oscar and went on to earn an impressive $187.7 million globally. It did have the benefit of major stars such as Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender in its cast, however — a luxury that “The Birth of a Nation” does not enjoy.

Fox Searchlight’s bid wasn’t the highest offer on the table. Netflix offered $20 million for “The Birth of a Nation,” but sources say that Parker was turned off by the idea of premiering the film on the streaming platform at the same time as it theatrical debut, a model that the company used to release last year’s “Beasts of No Nation.” That film failed to make much of an impact at the box office, although the company claims it was streamed by millions of subscribers.

Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios also offered $20 million, while the Weinstein Company and Sony were among the companies offering up bids, with the Weinstein Company making a $14 million offer. To get a meeting with the filmmakers and the sales agent, WME, bidders had to provide offers of at least $12 million, sources say.

Other sources add that Parker, who owned a significant stake in the movie, had a great deal of control over who emerged as the winning distributor.

The film will also have the advantage of playing into the zeitgeist, given that Hollywood has come under fire for nominating only white actors at the Oscars for the second year in a row. Against the backdrop of Hollywood being too white, “The Birth of a Nation” could tap into that outrage to be a major contender when next year’s Oscar nominations are announced. It helps that early notices have been strong. Variety critic called the picture “searingly impressive” and predicted it would “stir deep emotion.”

Fox Searchlight’s success with the Academy helped close the deal with Parker. The studio has scored 13 Best Picture nominees in the last 12 years and won three in the last 10. Given the controversy surrounding this year’s nominees and the re-emergence of the #OscarsSoWhite movement, one rival studio executive predicted “The Birth of a Nation” would get a warm reception from Oscar voters.

“Hollywood may be slow, but it isn’t stupid,” the executive said.

20th Century Fox is its corporate cousin — Searchlight releases appear on HBO. The studio also has foreign television and satellite deals that bring in additional revenue and could lower the break-even point by 25% or more, sources say.
remember this the next time anyone talks about the economics of the Fantastic Four....

I Am Legend - super smart black man creates cure for deadly disease and dies in the end

Man of Steel - white man as flying super hero, upright and true, gets the girl in the end.
Hancock - black man as flying super hero, surly, bumbling, has to be taught to be heroic, white man gets HIS GIRL in the end.

Harry Potter - white boy who can manipulate reality
NO NONWHITE COUNTERPART

Neo - white man as digital jesus
NO NONWHITE COUNTERPART

When they do themselves its always on some great shit..when they do US its almost always on some need cac assistance shit.
This is why its important for US to do these stories..

One of the most powerful posts of 2016.

Which means they are free of blame because of cognitive dissonance?

Help me understand why a statement like that would be made at the end of a movie like this.

"“These people thought they were doing good when they were doing bad,”"

Someone else have another interpretation?

:confused::confused::confused:

Murder of the innocent is always a sin. It is said that Turner's comrades even killed babies. But being as the actor/director is possibly Christian, he is possibly thinking in the framework of, "murder is a sin", rather than wrath.

Can't wait for the most important film since Malcolm X!
Perhaps this will wake up those scared Negroes in Black Hollywood and open the doors for other movies such as

Toussaint Louverture, and John Brown.....

What does this mean in context?
"“These people thought they were doing good when they were doing bad,” said Parker of his effort to depict the entirety of the slavery ecosystem. “In 2016, that echoes,” he added, to a roar of approval from the Park City crowd."

Might makes right, status quo is the way to go, we know we wrong but are going to feign ignorance, and I am insecure which justifices me treating you like sh!t, due to my jealousy, envy, and fear.

That's the "other" angle.
Fox will probably put it on the shelf, never to be heard from again.
These were the FIRST words out of my mate's mouth.
I loved that this brotha titled this the same as the movie made in 1915 which to this day is the most racist movie ever made. That's a chess move and a good way to remind folks who don't know how treacherous these cac's were with their propaganda film making.
MAN, LISTEN...that was the first thing I told my mate,"And this ninja had the gall, the audacity, the gumption, to name his film the same as one of THE most RACIST films in history."

In my opinion, it's chess. Think about how the internet searches are going to work out on this one...you pull the scab off the old to get to the new and there may be some children who are not of color giving their parents, grandparent, and great grandparents if they are still living, THE side eye!

And we as African descendants who don't know of the original...hell, we just need to know and maybe we can convert some of these negropeans who think it's all good.
