UPDATE: Donald Trump Takes Office as the 47th US President

And where does this money go?
  • Recipient: The funds are awarded to the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) on behalf of the state.
  • Penalty Calculation: The jury applied the maximum legal penalty of $5,000 per violation for 75,000 counts of deceptive or unconscionable trade practices.
  • Purpose: Attorney General Raúl Torrez stated the verdict is a victory for "every child and family who has paid the price" for Meta's safety failures, though the money itself is paid as state penalties rather than direct settlements to individual families.
  • Ongoing Proceedings: While the jury decided the $375 million penalty, a second phase of the trial is scheduled for May 4, 2026. During this phase, a judge will consider a "public nuisance" claim, which could result in Meta being ordered to pay additional damages or fund public safety programs.
In New Mexico, funds from civil penalties and lawsuits are typically managed through a combination of state treasury deposits and legislative appropriations. While the specific allocation for the $375 million Meta verdict may still be determined, the following rules and past precedents generally apply to the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ):
The Guardian

1. Deposit into the General Fund
Under New Mexico Statutes Section 57-12-11, civil penalties recovered by the Attorney General on behalf of the state under the Unfair Practices Act are typically remitted to the State Treasurer for deposit into the General Fund. Once in the General Fund, these monies are subject to appropriation by the New Mexico Legislature for various state needs, such as education, healthcare, or public safety.

2. Funding Public Safety and Remediation Programs
In the next phase of the trial scheduled for May 4, 2026, the NMDOJ will argue a "public nuisance" claim. If successful, the judge could order Meta to:

  • Fund Public Programs: Meta may be required to pay for statewide programs designed to alleviate the harms alleged in the lawsuit, such as youth mental health services or child online safety education.
  • Abatement Efforts: Similar to past opioid settlements, funds could be earmarked for specific "remediation" or "abatement" purposes related to the case.

3. Covering Investigative and Legal Costs
New Mexico law allows the NMDOJ to retain a portion of recovered penalties to cover the costs of investigation and enforcement. This ensures the department can continue pursuing similar consumer protection and public safety litigation.

4. Implementing Court-Ordered Changes
While not "spending" the money directly, the NMDOJ is also seeking injunctive relief. This would force Meta to spend its own resources to:

  • Enact effective age verification policies.
  • Improve systems for removing predators from its platforms.
  • Protect minors from encrypted communications used by bad actors.

5. Potential Restitution (Less Likely)
While the $375 million is specifically for civil penalties (punishment), the NMDOJ sometimes secures restitution in other settlements. If restitution were awarded in a future phase, those funds would be directed back to specifically affected individuals or families.

I hate when people post Trump’s home turf is Florida when that motherfuckers from New York

Speaking on behalf of my fellow Empire State residents let me assure you we don't claim that incompetent, racist pedophile and he is now clearly a resident and representative of the Sunshine State.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yeah....

So basically it goes like this. Americans live in a bubble, the "free speech bros" was just a ploy to get the GOP in office, the "free speech" after a while causes problems and the Government needs to correct those problems. Lots of people use X to make a buck speaking on American issues, this is no more.

Also these "free speech bros" have to go further and further, they need to criticize Trump when he's wrong, they can't go full GOP cause the audience begins to see through the hustle, the hands are tied, now reality has set in.

Grift coming to a end, America just raised the age of enlistment to 42 from 34, they need bodies, not constant conversation and criticism.

So yeah it's a wrap.

Dirty game at the end of the day, foreigners big mad this was their only income and they were getting paid.

Same thing is gonna happen to the AI grift and the fake pictures as well, Elon hears all the conversation. It's all gonna come to a end.

Elon backed down and paused the new rule, he really needs the grifters for views. Pathetic

America doesn't seem to be what everyone thought it was, seems like just a hustle and scam.

Make America Great Again...the US has never looked this week in decades

Everything this dude says he is going to do he does the opposite (except going hard on immigrants and even there he is so cruel that he turned a lot of public opinion against him)

Only thing dude follows through on is Project 2025 (this must be why he is still allowed to be President)

I don't know if America has ever looked this week and incompetent. Even Vietnam wasn't this much of a fuck up.

To be fair he isn't wrong.

There have always been some brothers/sisters who will shit on any of us who are employed in any law enforcement jobs or enrolled in the military no matter the circumstances.

I mean are you going to be proud of your grandad if he was a slave catcher during the civil war. What about if he collected Native American scalps for a living.

That was law enforcement at one point in America.

So not all law enforcement is bad. But if you enforcing immoral laws you can't hide it by saying I'm just doing a job.

So we should refuse employment in law enforcement and save those jobs for the racist cops who have been terrorizing our communities?

Having representation in these professions is the best and only way to really change this.

Y'all are making the same point. Of course it would be ideal to have Black law enforcement and military personnel in positions of influence to check the unequal and heavy-handed policing of the Black community.

The reality is that there just aren't any overtures being made to that purpose, nor any prominent organizations comprised of Black LEO/military looking to effect that kind of change. What we do see at this very moment is niggas collecting checks wandering aimlessly around the airport dressed like knock-off G.I. Joe action figures from the Dollar Tree while TSA agents go without pay for 6 weeks. Black faces don't mean anything if they are just going along to get along for $$$.

And this has always been my point! We just don't need more Black cops, we need more sergeants, chiefs, police board and fraternity members. More Black cops is good, but they don't do much good if they're answering to white bosses. But we get funneled to some kind of entertainment, or prison. Imagine if Lebron was a cop? You ain't NEVER out running that brother! And if he is policing a neighborhood that he knows and or lives in a lot of potential crimes would end in: "Don't let me get your granny out here!"

The math that it takes to be a drug dealer are jobs that folks could be chemists, actuaries, chemical engineer or scientists. We should be flooding a lot of these professions!

To be fair he isn't wrong.

Them same idiots will then cry that “They won’t hire Black folks” then when they do everybody is a coon. Ice is suspect but there’s millions of cops not all Black folks are coons who are cops , there are some good Black men and women that do alot of good that actually protect us from bullshit. It’s weird, it’s a fucking job like anything else . I got police fam and they see it just as a job with a good pension and good ass pay nothing more.

i've told a few i wouldn't pass judgement on these black ice agents without some deeper context on their careers. before the orange dufus....ice was doing their job legally and way less controversial. probably a bunch of trained ex-officers or other branches of service. ....decent people. are all ice agents out in the wild rounding up illegals? are a bunch of them who have a better moral compass pencil pushers or the office type? part of me would love to think those are our people and the ones we're seeing at the airports and not the dumbasses
