Roy Jones and Technique

The following are excerpts of a mailbag conversation between a guy gaining much respect as a trainer and an analyst, Stephen Edwards, and a boxing fan that claims to have trained with Roy Jones. Some here have said Jones never had a good defense or boxing technique. The actual interpretation of what defense entails apparently is not universal.

Was Roy Jones Jr just a mindless speed demon void of technique or was he just ahead of his time?

Mailbagger's comment:

"Roy is as technical as they come. We know that the art of boxing is over a 100 years old so that means that there are virtual 100's of defensive and offensive moves. Floyd uses the Shoulder Roll as a defensive cloak and dagger but when I questioned Roy about his methods he actually took the time out to demonstrate a weapon that he used in the RUIZ fight called the Windshield Wiper, a sort of Jack Johnson catch/parry motion he uses to pick off with his open palms when rapid fire punches are being fired at him.
Bread, I can say that I felt the effectiveness of Roy's parry's as they threw me off. His hands seemed to move like a helicopter's propellers. He also has SEVERAL ways of immobilising an opponent after they throw a jab and then taking them out with SEVERAL counter punch options after immobilising them.
I have heard over the years that Roy does not throw a jab. Again, I would like to say that I understand this point. BUT they are wrong. Roy does throw a jab but we know it as a straight right hand! Roy has a way of throwing it that he says makes it more effective than the classical left handed jab. Basically, Roy does everything backwards.
He has reversed engineered most of the traditional moves in boxing and found ways of using this to trap and immobilise his adversaries. He has methodically studied and broken down traditional boxing moves (such as the double jab right hand) and found 'shortcuts'. His methods are so unorthoxed because what a classical boxer will do in 3 moves, Roy would use his methodology + SUPREME athleticism to execute the same result in ONE move..."

Stephen Edwards' Response:

"I know the fans are wrong when they assume Roy is not technical. He was just UNCONVENTIONAL in his approach. He was such a genius , people insulted him by giving him compliments. It’s a shame that more people didn’t appreciate the wonderful gifts he had. Speaking of the jab. I always thought this was Roy’s most amazing talent. He was not especially tall for a lightheavyweight, yet he took away most guys jabs without jabbing himself. Everyone insulted him by saying he abandoned his jab, but it wasn’t true. He was just such a genius he did it in a different way. From the outside looking in, I saw Roy take away jabs with feints, a check hook and lead right hands. But I know there had to be more to it. I want to ask Roy exactly what he did and can he break it down for me. He is truly a genius in my opinion."

IMO he relied more on his great athletic gifts than technical skill....

when he slowed down he was finished and continues to get KO'ed.....:smh:

Give a boxer with normal speed, Roy Jones "technique" and see what happens. As for what these guys were saying - they actually said nothing at all that would convince anyone that Roy was this defensive genius that didn't need his speed or reflexes. Just watch film. GREAT defensive fighters can normally fight until they are past their prime because they rely on skill. Once Roy's speed went out the window - well you know the result. But we're tired of mashing this up with you. You're the only dude I know that still believes Roy was this great defensive master.

Real Talk....

JMMarquez, James Toney, Bernard Hopkins... not the fastest... but Defensively on another level...

You say "we're" like there's some massive amount of people that know or even talk about boxing on this porn forum we all know and love . Anyway, regardless of who you know there are plenty of people that think Jones had a great defense and most of those people are professional boxers and trainers as opposed to the average armchair joe that usually can only decipher simple things. This is not to be condescending but most of the people that think Jones had a great defense are people that are actually in the game while most people that are not in the game just see a fast guy that started getting hit as soon as he slowed down. Go around and ask and you will see that this is true.

But in the end, is any one's opinion that much greater than anyone else's? Boxing is called the sweet science but it isn't really a science. Just as the passage indicated, there are hundreds of defensive and offensive moves.

Also, this stuff about defensive fighters normally being able to fight past their prime is a myth and I can think of like 20 examples on the fly. Guys with great chins last the longest regardless of defensive prowess. How long did Whitaker last past his prime? WHat about EL Radar Benitez? WHat about Toney? Toney hasn't got knocked out because he has a great chin, not because of his defense.

its hard not say he didn't rely on his physical gifts....he was easier to KO (badly) later in his career as he slowed....while Hopkins is fighting men at 46 that could be his son....:smh:

no hate to RJJ he needs to be behind the mic his Boxing commentary is excellent...seriously dude was over hyped by HBO when Boxing was really going downhill....

Hopkins is an anomaly and ironically is relying on his physical gifts that have allowed him to stay in the game so long. Not all physical gifts come in the form of powerpunching and speed.

Whatever Zef, this subject is boring already honestly. Roy has become a running joke, just like this topic. Dude is one fight away from being a serious tragedy. And I said WE because as many times as you've brought this topic up, I have yet to see anyone agree with you. Anyone says anything about Roy and you run to the rescue, honestly it seems your defense is better than Roy's.

You have a short memory if you don't remember anyone agreeing with me because we were just talking about this on the main forum last week. Regardless, I wouldn't even care if no one agreed with me because I'm just oblivious to that kind of thing. That's why you never see me jumping on bandwagons no matter how crazy my opinions are perceived to be. At the very least, you know I'm going to keep it raw and real with you'll about my opinions.

Regarding running to Roy's rescue, I made the topic just to have something different to talk about and maybe just to get some of you riled up a bit:D. Actually, the only time the boxing conversation gets jumping around here is when Pac or Floyd are mentioned and that is truly sad. But again, it's a porn forum and it's hard to concentrate on multiple boxing topics in between jerking off. I actually have tried this purposely as a mental exercise and it is quite tiring.

Hopkins is a throwback fighter fam....very old school with his approach to training and boxing...etc....like I said in another thread he has the ability to take your best weapon away from you...

crafty cat...he doesn't rely on speed to fight his younger opponents lately since he is not physically able to hang with most of these young cats...but he out thinks them gets in their head...

ppl don't like his tactics...hitting and holding...rough stuff but he does it well...again RJJ is great but he's been slower and easier to hit later down his career he has been irrelevant for a few yrs now since he progressively slowed....what else is the answer...?

a younger RJJ would have beat smothering Calzahge...he was spent IMO after Ruiz....

I agree with you but I just think Hopkins is special. It's not like even old school cats were doing what Hopkins is doing. That's why what Hopkins did last week set a record. I agree that RJJ has been slower and easier to hit and I also agree that his punch resistance has dipped. However, I don't believe that this is because of some perceived lack of skills. Let's look at James Toney. Toney is considered a defensive wizard yet he has been getting hit more than he ever has before in the past 10 years. Toney's chin is saving him not his defense. If Toney's chin was as shitty as Roy Jones', do you think he would have gotten past Sam Peter just on his so called superior defense?

Roy did have technique, and was amazing in his prime.... but you have to admit that his freakish quickness and speed is what allowed him to use those techniques. When someone ties their techniques to otherworldy physical talent, they better quit at their peak, because when they return to a more normal level the holes in their strategy will become magnified... take dominique wilkin's amazing jumping ability away and was he still a top 50 player? What about vince carter or sean kemp without 40inch hops? Now ask the same question about Jordan. Late in his career he wasn't nearly the athlete he was in the beginning, but he still dominated more athletic guys with skill.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Physicality definitely plays a major part in how an athlete can put his or her technique to work. It's like a fighter that's a big puncher but has lost speed or coordination. As this fighter gets older, he may get fewer knockouts. It's not that this guy could never punch, what happened is he may not be quick enough to hit the target like before. Or maybe he sees the opening but his reaction time is off. So I agree, Jones did have technique but for whatever reasons he physically is not the same fighter anymore and like most fighters he has not been able to adapt to his decline like Hopkins has.

All fighters depend on their physicality. Floyd Mayweather has a great defense but it's not like he will maintain that defense once his legs start going and once his reflexes start going. I don't care how great he shoulder rolls or how great a defense he has, once he slows down he'll be getting tagged a hell of a lot more often and will be tasting canvas.

Toney was a good defender earlier in his career....when he balloned in weight thats when we saw probably the best chins in Boxing go to work...Toney and Holyfield had chins made out of granite :itsawrap:....

all I'm saying Zef is RJJ was great in his prime he was a marvel he's not the only boxer to age and get KO'ed....all I'm saying fam as he aged he slowed down...and was less effective every fight....while other Boxers reinvent themselves...Ali is a good example of this....

I agree with you. I think Toney's chin has saved his legacy as a defender. If he would have been getting knocked out left and right like Jones, people would be questioning if his defense was really ever that great.

had no choice dude was fat and out of shape later in his career :smh:....and probably has some damage he mumbles his words alot now.....you right tho his chin and punching power saved his legacy  Hall of Famer for sure....
