The most unpretentious NBA superstar

Nope. The article wasnt even remotely written like that. But you probably didnt even try to read it.
I read it....and there is definitely that underlying theme (as usual when it comes to black professional athletes). this is most evident when the writer alludes to Lebron James. The fact is that a lot of black NBA players share a similar story, but ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SAME. These writers are constantly trying to tell us who the good negros are when it's really just different people doing them.
I stopped when he dissed LeBron...
I kept reading because it's a great story (minus the 'good negro' dialogue). I love reading about celebrities who are humble.

I disagree. I root for Lebron James but The Decision was attention whoring at his finest. Using Lebron as a contrast has merit..it was the perfect way to illustrate the difference and I thought about it when Durant announced his extension. However, the theme of the article wasnt good vs bad....and didnt paint Lebron as the bad guy or didnt say that all athletes should be the same... but it told the story of why and how Durant has become to be so humble. ESPN is good for having an alterior motive....but I just didnt see in this one..and believe me, I start espn articles looking for it.

yea i agree its like if you call someone out on something 1 incident then you're dissing him. it wasn't a diss in my opinion it was a difference. one person handled it one way and in contrast this person handled it another. not a slight on lebron just two people with two different approaches, neither of which is wrong. i do agree with the feeling that sometimes they want to pigeonhole us into being 1 person and one type of person and that's not fair. but to me this article was more about durant and his story, and lebron was just 1 point in the difference between him and someone who is more out there...speaks to his shyness, he seems like a shy person honestly..and that's what happens when you get a lot of people from humble beginnings making it. some react differently. in the case of someone like durant and rose, they seemed to be naturally shy so the things they do fall in line...they don't speak much they don't do much that's just who they are as men..exactly who they've always been. on the other end of the spectrum someone like lebron and wade seem to me like they've always been outspoken, like they've always been the life of the party or group type of people, so they're just being themselves on a larger scale. which is why you'd see wade on t-mobile and lebron on saturday night live. not to say rose and durant can't do it, but its just not them. like if you were in a room with all four of them, rose and durant would be chilling and lebron and wade would cracking jokes and telling stories.
its just how they ultimately are as individuals, and because of the fame its magnified in either direction, nobody is right and nobody is wrong in my opinion, cause they're all being true to how their personality dictates they be.

agreed

because Durant even said a small part of him what like to know what Lebron went through...just to know what it was like..so i definitely dont think it was a knock on Lebron.....just pointing out their differences

exactly and people are so touchy, if you say anything ill about lebron you're a hater and all of this and all of that.

like dude said he stopped reading soon as they touched on the difference, like why? why be so damn sensitive  and their minds are made up too

its just a simple difference and both were on the other end of the spectrum, when has ANYONE in history ever had a "Decision" on live tv...like keep it real, when has anyone done that for free agency to announce where they're going like it was their high school commitment day to go to college?
wade and bosh didn't even have that...just him
and on the other end, durant didn't have that
its not dissing lebron, its pointing out fact.

like you can't even discuss lebron's game without being labeled a hater....i'm a purist...everyone needs to work on their game..EVERYONE does
but when you say something about his game...you're labeled a hater

why not just keep the article about the person it is meant to be about...isn't including a *childish* snub against Lebron doing exactly what we SHOULD NOT do if we think he is an attention whore? I think the article would have been just fine with out trying to make this man an exception. Like I said, there are dozens of NBA stories of good, humble guys just like Kevin Durant.

I dont think it was a childish snub at all. I think some of you are just too sensitive regarding lebron. When profiling someone and making a specific argument about a particular trait, often the most illustrative way to make the point is by giving an example that clearly articules someone who is on the other end of the spectrum.

Lebron is a superstar. The title is about another superstar. What better way to illustrate the difference by using a superstar who is world reknown to another one who as illustrated in the article, has people even confusing him with KG.

The ONLY other superstar that even remotely resembles Durant is D. Rose and even D. Rose gets more attention than Durant.

Guys like durant rare...reminds me Barry Sanders... they are just humble but also ridiculously shy characters...they arent dozens of superstars in the same you are reaching what that dozens of similar examples.. the key word is SUPERSTAR.

The Decision was a debacle and the perfect example to use in that situation.

The league needs to promote guys like Kevin Durant, Derek Rose, and Blake Griffin more.

why does a superstar have to be humble or unpretentious. they are superstars aka the alpha dog. how many alpha males do you know in any profession who are humble

people on bgol are always touting their own accomplishments, but for some reason pro athletes need to be humble:confused:

Exactly. Anyway, the most arrogant people are usually the most popular. It's also cool to know when to tone it down.

I say both kinds are needed. The humble and the popular gives people choices.

I dont think the article is making a claim that a superstar must be humble. The article is just clearly illustrating how Durant is different from the average superstar. Very simple.

Basic reading comprehension skills man. Not everyone has them.

;)
so the article does not imply that durant is a breath of fresh air unlike the other superstars in the nba who feels the worlds revolves around them.
the author say durant is the most unpretentious nba superstar.
so the word pretentionious does not have negative connotations

Naw. I'm not sensitive about any man I don't know :dunno: but at the same time, I call a spade a spade. Say someone wants to write a story about Barack Obama and they write "Barack Obama is a breath of fresh air compared to other presidents who start frivolous wars". Doesn't that have a different vibe than if they simply wrote "Barack Obama's humility and intelligence make him a great president"? How we use words sets a tone for what we say and write. That is all I'm saying. It was unnecessary to put all of that extra stuff in there. I think it took away from the story and added nothing to it.

I completely understand what you are saying...However, my previous reply still stands. I think using Lebron and The Decision was the perfect way to easily illustrate how they take contrary paths.

Also, the reference to Lebron was not the premise. If he started his entire article with that reference, then you would really have a point...otherwise I do think it is being too sensitive..but we can agree to disagree...

but i can also understand why someone may not want to hear anything else about the Lebron debacle.

Ive actually created threads where I thought the media took the Lebron shit too far...but i just think it was a very fair and relevant reference THIS time.

I agree with the agree to disagree part. You are someone who can see the other side of the argument.
However too many people who read ESPN take is as gospel with being able to read between the lines and form their own opinion.

I feel this does the NBA a great disservice because too many people have a negative opinion of its players from articles like these. I frequent some sports themed message boards and too people parrot whatever tripe is written by ESPN as fact.

I honestly dont see much difference in what you two said. You just seem to have a more negative interpretation as it relates to the other league superstars than eewwll has.

Colin would be proud that I read the whole thing.

Durant IS a good guy although the writer might have been hinting at comparing him to "BAD" black ballers.

I read about 3/4's of the article an got tired of scrolling down

when i read the title i thought it was gonna be about D. Rose too

Exactly. Alot of people in this thread are lying to themselves..

countdown before another prominent black athlete says durant isn't "black" enough to the national media...

right because those guys arent getting promoted a lot now:confused:

They are promoted because they have been blessed with natural born talent. But let us not pretend that the Kobe's, Lebron's, Wade's, and D. Howard's of the league are not what brings people to the game. All four of these guys make the league money. However you seem to have problems with guys who produce without the showboating. Guys like Durant, Rose, and Griffin are the types I would promote to the youth because they have the right mindset. My point stands as earlier the league needs the humble superstar and the showmanship superstar. Both are great for the league but to a grade school or JV/highschool youth who are learning the game it is always best to teach them humility. Why do people take humility for weakness:smh:?
