Lil' Cease may have nabbed a few standout verses on Junior M.A.F.I.A. anthems, but his best known verse to date was his solo rhymes on Lil' Kim's 'Crush on You' that appeared on her 1996 debut 'Hardcore.' As it turns out, Cease-A-Leo has Cam'ron to thank for his shining moment.

Cam'ron recently revealed that his pen was behind the original rendition of the tune. During an interview with XXLMag.com, the Harlemite explained that Untertainment CEO Lance Un Rivera supplied Ma$e with $30,000 to ghostwriter for some of his artists. Instead of penning them himself, Ma$e paid Cam $5,000 to write a few songs -- one of which was 'Crush on You.'

"What happened was, Un gave Mase $30,000 to write five songs for Lil' Cease at that time and Mase gave me $5,000 of the 30 to write one or two of the songs," he explained. "I wrote the 'Crush on You' song and they ended up keeping it for Lil' Kim album but it was really for Lil' Cease. The original 'Crush on You' is all Lil' Cease, Lil' Kim isn't even on the record."

He continued by stating that he never received any royalties for his contributions to the record, the remix to which became one of Kim's highest charting songs to date. Cam's appearance at XXL coincided with the release of his collaboration LP 'Gunz N' Butta' with protege Vado, which bowed at No. 78 on the Billboard charts with 7,500 copies sold.

well camron had no pull to look at lance and mase to say "hey i want royalties etc... rivera would simply find anoter person or mase would do the writing himself. not clear if mase imself got royalties of that so if mase did not get rotalties for that camron wouldnt.

camron probably did it to wit a "no choice" position just get foot in door type thing.

this is not about camron but unless you have your own and put your name out there you hhave no leg to stand on when negotiating wit street savvy record execs.

I thought this was common knowledge?

I knew this years ago. This is the first I heard about the Mase shit though. That's funny, I'm pocketing 25, and you get 5.

But that's why it was amusing to me how the Kim stans acted towards the Nicki beef.

So he supposedly fucked himself out of a lifetime of royalties by taking cash over a credit?? Nothing to be proud of.

Fact is, he IS listed as a co-writer and certainly must receive royalties. That's what publishers are for.

Writing credit has absolutely NOTHING to do with royalty splits - all it does is credit the writers. For two writers the split could be 50/50 or 99/01 or 100/0. Many times a rap song using samples can list all of the sampled song's writers but those original publishers can (and often did) negotiate a flat fee in lieu of long term royalties for a new song that might or might not have become a hit.

Writing credit has EVERYTHING to do with royalty splits. That's ALL that matters. Publishers get a percentage and writers get the rest. The artists (if they're not the writers) have a different arrangement.

These are the only writers officially credited by ASCAP:

HEARD, ANDREAO SHAUNEE
LLOYD, JAMES KOWAN
LORBER, JEFFREY H
WALLACE, CHRISTOPHER

you know nothing about the music industry please fall way back

I won't even touch on that comment about "Cam being stupid for taking $5k to do it instead of royalties" ... pick up a book asap

you out-trolled yourself again blunt

Blah, blah, blah. I've forgotten more about the music business than you'll ever know. Taking just $5K on a track that appears on a multi-Platinum album is ultimately a bad move, unless you were desperate.

Who knows, maybe they're all B gang family connected with the BooYa Tribe:rolleyes:

& Who deemed this new or newsworthy?

Still recall the big groove they threw for Cam on the Eastside in the late 90s through Un & them when he 1st officially came out.

Thought moves like that may be what influenced Curtis to licences MagicStick

peace

I can't see spitting someone else's rhymes. It just doesn't feel right.

Edit:Kim was bad as hell in the green themed part of the video.

Sadly, I have to agree with Blunt.:( Also, writing credit does have a lot to do with royalty splits. Who wrote what, and how much of it they wrote, depends on what they get.

Writers don't always receive royalties. Most only receive a flat fee unless they are well known or have several hits under their belt.

This is also true. I know the girl that wrote "Survivor, and she sold the song outright.
