Is the Facebook Fad Ending?

It has a stratospheric valuation, an Oscar-nominated movie about it, 600 million fans, and its CEO just appeared on Saturday Night Live. So where's Facebook going to go from here? Down.

Okay, so maybe not right away.

But it certainly feels like the social-networking site is beginning to sag under its own ponderous weight and prodigious Netscape-era hype. In fact, Facebook is so overhyped that a recent $1.5 billion injection of capital from Goldman, Sachs and others meant it now has an estimated market valuation of approximately $50 billion.

Indeed, Facebook could be even bigger based on trading in the secondary market (the one for wealthy folks) where according to SharesPost the company is worth over $82 billion -- making it more valuable than Amazon.com.

But it seems like Facebook's days may already be numbered. Why? Facebook started out as a simple, fun place to digitally cavort and post silly, unflattering pictures of one another. It quickly transformed into a miasma of lurking dangers, threats to our personal security and safety, and a great way to get fired -- or worse, prosecuted for goodness-knows-what. Everyone should be a little more cautious about the "social" part of social networking, these days, and for good reason.

So true. The intrusiveness and the security has really turned me off of facebook.

yea i never post any more and notice no one else does either. Twitter and tumblir have taken over

The security fear people are just hypocrites. You post sensitive information which if you would have kept to yourself wouldn't have changed anything but then complain about privacy. I don't think it is ending soon unless another platform for narcisstic attention whores who need acceptance is made

Most people i know that use FB hardly go on it that much. this is what i used to do before i delete my myspace page back in 2007. thats how you know FB is coming to an end.

the ninja that own it better cash in on it while the money is still hot. these social networking sites are fads, once they're gone they dont come back and they all have expiration date. migente.com, localhookups.com. blackplanet.com, sconex.com, myspace.com and etc. all had their shine. FB is officially on the clock then it will soon be twitter but twitter got more years to go before it reach that point.

but if i had to choose i prefer twitter to die instead of FB. people always talking shit behind people back on twitter and always bitching and complaining. twitter you just see the bitch in people by the stuff they be posting. :smh:

This is true. I just don't like how people can post pics/info about me and everyone will see it. I don't need people tagging me in pics or posting stuff that might get me in trouble. Way too intrusive.

"Facebook ruins lives".

how dose your not having an account stop people from posting pics about or with you?
I understand they can't tag you but I fail to see how your lack of an account would end this.

there are too many corporate and government interests for it to end anytime soon, facebook has made data mining way easier for them

his friend will take pics of him in it while hanging out then they will post it on FB. i dont fuck with FB and I have alot of pics on it through friends post pics of us hanging out. my info may not be on FB but my face is.

Just a few points:

- u can disable EVERYTHING u just referenced
- they said rap was a fad
- they said the internet was a fad

* I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. For those who have it, I'm certain they visit weekly, if not daily.

It doesn't, but there's a huge difference between the two. My boss will see that picture of me smoking a blunt on facebook. He most likely won't see that same pic if it was posted somewhere else on the net.

Most people who have social jobs use it to communicate and get information. I give out my card with my email and fb contact to tons of clients and people I meet during events. Saving my personal phone number for close contacts.
If you have an event or a message that you need to go out to 400 people, regular email and phone just don't cut it.

Now you can. Also, when they had their little "security issue", they removed everyone's security settings. You had to log in and change them back.

Like I said, it's just too intrusive for my liking.

People kill me bitching about security on facebook. People only know what you post. If you put all your shit out there then you fucked yourself.

facebook is the shit.

it still baffles me that they are a billion dollar company, but can't stop hackers and spammers in those little dirty ass computer labs in nigeira :smh:

It's not about idiots posting their business. Even with everything disabled profile information can still be harvested, which is why zuckerberg gets a lot of heat.

Another reason why Tumblr should be next. You put what ever you want on the page, you don't have to worry about securing everything or anything slipping thru the cracks. Plus corporations can make their pages actually look more like official websites and not have the same layout as everybody else. I really never liked facebook much, can't stand twitter even more.

Funny this comes from fox news...owners of myspace.com...lol........anyway facebook ain't going down no time soon hell my 70 year old granny has a profile

foxnews.com ?? Fox = Murdoch---Murdoch = Myspace
and you expect an article without propaganda??
These are probably the same people who reported the bogus story on ACORN
