He makes a valid point. Why would you do the 2(12) in the 48 / 2(9+3) equation before you divide 48 by 2?
And then do the complete opposite when an exponent is in the mix for this problem - 2(9)^2?

Before you get lost, the parentheses goes first just to solve the group. When it is solved and brought down to one number then the parentheses operates as the substitution for the multiplication symbol.
