Obama signs temporary extension of Patriot Act

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has signed a three-month extension of key surveillance provisions of the Patriot Act.

The law extends two areas of the 2001 act. One provision allows law enforcement officials to set roving wiretaps to monitor multiple communication devices. The other allows them to ask a special court for access to business and library records that could be relevant to a terrorist threat.

Patriot Act extended for a year, but without changes

Updated: Friday, March 19th, 2010 | By Catharine Richert

President Barack Obama's promise to increase oversight of wiretapping practices has been put on hold after Congress passed a one-year extension of the Patriot Act that made no changes to the law.

In the fall of 2009, civil liberties groups were hopeful that two bills proposing substantial changes to the act would pass. One, by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, would have reauthorized three expiring provisions of the Patriot Act with new reporting requirements and oversight authority. It would also have phased out the government's use of national security letters, documents used by the government to demand businesses or organizations turn over information about individuals. Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee approved a bill to reauthorize a provision letting the government maintain wiretaps even if a suspect changes phone numbers or providers. The bill would have allowed another provision to expire, canceling the government's power to track suspects that are not affiliated with any group or foreign country. The House bill also phased out the national letters program and modified the government's authority to conduct "sneak and peek" searches carried out in secret and requiring no prior notice.

But both those bills haven't gone further than their respective committees. Instead, Congress opted to pass a one-year extension of the expiring provisions, and civil liberties groups say the action precludes further work on the issue this year. As a result, we're moving this promise to Stalled.

sooooo why extend it at all? The tea party politicians of all people let that shit die. It was always unconstitutional and will always be unconstitutional.

bottom line we're in a police state either way. pres has the right to drop a scud on yo ass if he feels like it.

- and you know this for a FACT? nope. just another made up "negro" theory pulled out of thin air to justify further paranoia of govt. and powers that be...

Yeah, every government should be able to kidnap its citizens without explanation or accountability.
Fuck outta here!

- more emotional theatrics...here is a simple kindergarten question: show proof of this happening on a regular basis to everyday citizens in the name of the patriot act.

Aren't you for limited government?

- i'm for common sense.

fellas, seriously...with all that's going on in the world; economy, gas prices, war, unemployment rates, the educational system....is the patriot act really that big of a got damned deal? :dunno:

I don't give a fuck. He transferred to Columbia CC not GS which is basically impossible unless you can really pull some strings. How do you think those kind of strings got pulled? Why is everyone so gullible. Our country has royalty just like any other country, Americans just don't like to admit it.

he was a good student man. and this happened b4 he went to law school i presume.

Doesn't work that way. Unless you founded a multimillion dollar company and invented a new way to launch space shuttles YOU ARE NOT TRANSFERRING TO COLUMBIA CC You would go to GS. Anyone who knows how the ivy's and top 25 schools work will tell you. Your family would have to fucking own Target to TRANSFER to Columbia CC. And I hear he wasn't a great student, plus No one can find any records.

Why three months, though?

Why not six months? Why not a year?

They have some shit planned for the next three months?

guessing here but there were probably already contracts in motion from the Bush era that would have been ridiculously expensive to break. contractors, subcontractors, and supply chains can't stop on a dime unless you are prepared to go to court and fight it out with all of them. then you have ongoing criminal prosecutions and ongoing court orders on top of that so its all messy. this was Bush and Repubs mess so 90 more days probably gives the dept of justice and congress more time to work on the alternative or compromise. I'm just saying Obamas hands are probably tied, in a legal sense, but i'm only speculatin

c/s obama trying to get re-elected...so he can really cut up and put a end to all this bush bullshit

What does this have to do with his reelection? Better yet how would it affect his reelection? Obama had the countries blessings to do away with all the Bush administration bullshit when he got elected in '08.

If it was bush would go along happily?

Fuck no. The patriot act was a knee jerk reaction to 9/11. Alot of Americans at that time agreed with it because of the proposed illusion of "safety" that came wth the act itself. Fast foward almost ten years and the psychological damage done by 9/11 is gone. Extending the patriot act at this juncture is solely seen as an infringement on civil liberties and constitutional rights.

You niggas didn't say shit when Bush created this bullshit so Stfu.

I remember when everybody was following Obama in 08 like they were in a cult I brought up proof that Obama voted for the Patriot act when it came back up again(not to mention the video I posted of him swearing if he was elected to Senate he wouldn't fund Bush's wars, a promise he went back on until campaign time).

I always said if Americans wanted true change they would look at what these politicians did before election. I was then told by BGOL members to give it time. Step by step. Americans ain't ready for anything to radical.

The only people playing chess are the CACs that run this country. Gave us a choice between two candidates that support police state tactics.

These CACs are using the patriot act in the hood to lock up more black people. :smh: :smh:
