Warner Bros. has announced that Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle/Catwoman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, while Tom Hardy will play the villainous Bane.

We’ve spent years wondering about the villains and love interest(s) in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises – and now we at last have some definitive answers.

Christian Bale will return as the Caped Crusader in Batman 3 opposite two new foes – Oscar ceremony co-host Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. the sinewy anti-heroine, Catwoman) and Inception‘s Tom Hardy as the bruiser referred to only as Bane.

Warner Bros. made the announcement via a press release that featured the following quotes by Chris Nolan – who also cowrote the Dark Knight Rises screenplay with his brother, Jonathan:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story… I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Hathaway was previously shortlisted as one of the actresses being considered to appear in Nolan’s followup to The Dark Knight. She will follow in the footsteps of many an actress before her who played Batman’s sleek foe (and love interest) Catwoman onscreen – with perhaps the most memorable live-action incarnation being that of Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns back in 1992 (we’ll pretend that Halle Berry movie never happened).

Bane has a long history in the Batman universe as well – the character is not only a brutal, muscle-bound thug who can match the Caped Crusader in terms of physical prowess, he even once left Bruce Wayne paralyzed by snapping his spine during one of their battles in the epic comic book storyline “Batman: Knightfall”. It’s an excellent move on Nolan’s part to select a vicious villain like Bane to be the antagonist in the next entry in his gritty, hard-hitting trilogy about the dark vigilante. Just don’t expect Hardy to dress up like this for the part:

What do you think of this casting news for The Dark Knight Rises? Are you happy with Catwoman and Bane as the rogues? How about the actors playing them?

interesting....I'm sure Nolan can weave a good story from these two characters...was hoping to see a different villain than Bane though...

Wow!! You posted this a minute before me. Let me go delete my post. :(

Should be interesting.

TOM HARDY is an excellent actor in his own right.

For those who haven't seen it yet - make sure to watch BRONSON. It's a BGOL fan fave for good reason. Wild shit! He put on 3 stone (42 lbs) for the role. Watched it with my dad last month.

As of October 2010, he has signed on to play a lead role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. On January 19, 2011 it was confirmed he would be playing Bane.[13]
[edit] Personal life

Hardy married Sarah Ward in 1999, but they divorced some time later. He has a son, Louis Thomas Hardy (born 8 April 2008), with ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed.[14] In July 2010, Hardy proposed to actress Charlotte Riley after a year of dating.[15]

Hardy also battled alcoholism and a crack cocaine addiction in his early- to mid-twenties, but has been sober since 2003.[16]

In early 2009, Hardy starred in the film Bronson, about the real-life prisoner Charles Bronson, who has spent most of his adult life in solitary confinement. For the film, he put on three stone of muscle.[5]

Im somewhat disappointed, i'm completely over the whole cat women story line already. The Bane concept should be interesting, i trust nolan to make it work somehow.

I like that Cat woman pick, but I thought they would get a bigger dude to play as Bane. Dude is only listed as 5'9", so that makes Bale bigger. I guess they will use CSI in this one, but who am I do question Nolan. I thought he was crazy to pick Ledger and we all know how that turned out.

They'll do whatever they do with cruise in all his movies. I know hardy looked like a beast in bronson; if he's 5'9" I would not have guessed that watching his performance.

If you want to know what Bane will look like then watch the Bronson trailer at 1:45-1:47. The part where he says "I swear it!!!!". - That right there is the intensity and maybe the look of Bane.

Wild movie. Check the scene out when he's in the asylum and they start playing dance music. Classic.

I agree. I commented to my dad a handful of times that the SCORE/SOUNDTRACK was fuckin' great in the movie ... music fit it perfectly.

Should be interesting.

Knew they were gonna go w/ Bane but y'all mufuckas kept saying no...

Yo I just seen the Dark Knight on TNT I wonder if they gonna continue from where they left off w/ him being the hunted

I guess they put the kibosh on the Riddler, then? That kid from '3rd Rock' gets screwed again. First, he loses out to Ledger for the Joker role, and now this.

He prolly got blackballed for being in that horrible GI Joe movie...

Stop making shit up. He got a better opportunity from Nolan in Inception. If he wanted to use him in a Batman film he would. No audition necessary.

Anne works for me:yes:Ill miss this though:(

I don't think Anne can cut it as Catwoman. She may pull off Selina but she has never done anything remotely close to Catwoman. She's made a career of being meek and mild. I just can't see her as aggressive. And she is NOT sexy - she's attractive. There's a difference.

Man, I love that crazy looking white bitch!

Wow, I'm honored. YOU, paying attention to what I write? Responding in a disrespectful fashion, as well? I feel...relevant. Thanks.

As far as making anything up, I'm not. The initial printed articles on this movie discussed The Riddler as the primary bad guy, and listed him as the top choice for the role. I also don't believe that he was forced to choose between either movie, if that's what you're implying.
Finally, my 'blackballed' reference was meant as humor. Someone of your intelligence would have picked up on that, so I'll assume that your disdain was manufactured.

Nolan likes him a lot especially from working with him on Inception.

I think they probably just wanted to do different characters for this film, but I am sure this guy will get more work.

I can't say he was horrible in G.I. Joe because the movie sucked all-around. Everyone was bad.

Perhaps you're right. I was referring moreso to the fact that he was touted as the next BM villain early on, then I heard nothing until now.

And yes, G.I Joe was bad all around. I was just being funny referring to his Cobra Commander role getting him banned.

Perhaps the Bane character is expected to play better than the Riddler would in this 'realist' version of Batman. Historically, the Riddler has been played for laughs. Bane has no such negative history, and also has a fresher imagery in consumer's minds as a result of the Arkham Asylum game's popularity.

The other movies were good, so I'm looking forward to this one, as well.
