Ellen DeGeneres talks to guests about how she does it. Actress Alicia Silverstone wrote a book about how she does it. A slimmer Bill Clinton made news for talking about doing it, and all Chelsea's friends do it -- at least they did on her wedding day. Ed Begely Jr., the 61-year-old activist and actor, has been doing it for longer than any of them.
They eat a vegan diet, as more and more Americans are doing, trend-watchers and cookbook publishers tell us. But what does that mean, exactly?

Vegans, like vegetarians, never eat meat. But vegans are stricter, shunning not only meat, but fish and shellfish (which some vegetarians will eat), eggs, milk and other dairy products -- any food with an ingredient derived from an animal, from a cow down to an insect. (Insects? Yes. For example, cochineal, which makes many red food dyes red, has only recently been required to be listed on ingredient labels, but it's always been made from insects.)

Vegans and vegetarians have to take special care to get enough vitamin B12 and protein, but like anyone, they can get all the nutrients they need from a varied diet of plants and grains, according to nutritionist Marion Nestle.

"It's less about what 'foods' vegans can't eat and more about the ingredients," Michael Parrish Dudell, a blogger who often writes about vegan celebrities (notoriousMPD.com) and managing editor of The Domino Project, told The Daily Green. He should know; as of this month, he's been eating a vegan diet for 10 years.
Here's a look at some more of the foods avoided by Dudell and other vegans The Daily Green interviewed (including our Facebook friends):

1. Meat. Topping the list, of course, are all meats -- from hamburgers and pork chops to chicken wings and the Thanksgiving turkey.

2. Fish and shellfish. Whether it's a lowly shrimp, a fried fish stick, or wild Alaskan salmon, it's not part of a vegan diet.

3. Dairy products. Off the vegan menu: everything from milk and yogurt to cheese and butter.

4. Eggs. That means mayonnaise and anything else made with eggs (yes, most brownies and cakes, too!).

5. Honey. Bees are animals. Bees make honey. Vegans don't eat it.

6. White sugar. Some white sugar is processed with bone char, according to PETA.

7. Most beer. Guinness is filtered using tiny amounts of gelatin derived from fish bladders. And it's not alone. While some beers are vegan, others are filtered using egg whites or sea shells, according to barnivore, a vegan beer and wine guide.

8. Some breads. While many simple breads are a-OK, containing just four ingredients (flour, yeast, water, and salt) many breads and baked goods are made with whey (a dairy product) or with butter, eggs, or sugar.

9. Marshmallows. These and other foods, like gummy candies and Frosted Mini Wheats cereal, are made with gelatin -- a protein made from boiling skin, bones, and other animal parts. Surprisingly, though, a lot of junk food qualifies as vegan, even if it is unhealthy.

10. Salad dressing. Salads are great for vegans, but not necessarily the dressing. Scan the ingredient list, and you'll often find lecithin, which helps keep oil and vinegar from separating, and can be derived from animal tissues or egg yolk (both no-no's for vegans) or from soy (OK).

OK:confused:

I'll keep eating healthy meat included and unfortunately they'll live 10 years longer than me so I die at 90 god willing and they punch out at 100:D

Ellen DeGeneres? That dyke is lying. Vegan my ass, you know she eats the pussy.

could i give up meat? maybe

could i give up meat and fish? FUCK NO

Bingo

My people lets start eating more better.

As far as this article is concerned I don't think it's about eating better, (I mean around these parts). But to give up the entirety of these products? Living on JUST greenery items?

Man...I got to have some fish in there somewhere. A nice bowl of ice cream on a summer day once in a while. And I'm the only person in my family who LIKES tofu.

Always thought vegans were too extremist for me...:smh:

how about this people eat fucking better lean meats, fruits vegeatbles, nuts, beans, and whole wheat....human are homnivores we need meat and vegetables

peace

So how do they get their protein if they can't eat meat or fish?

I hear soy products and tofu have same protein as meat:dunno:
Breaking some of that soy down like crumbles can lead to a gassy situation for some;
There are supplients & other alternatives;
Am not vegan but know some as well as those who dont eat meat but arent vegans neither.

peace

Had salmon firecrackers from the cheesecake factory for lunch today, them shits were :dance::dance::dance::dance:

I eat fish damn near every meal..

11. PUSSY - unless they are muching on one of thel sex dolls, pussy and pussy juce comes from a woman so ANYTHING from an "animal" is off limits.

So I could never be a vegan. I'm strictly a vagitarian.

So that white girl on Russell Simmons show was in the red then because she claim to be vegan & even went to such extremes to protest that she packaged her self up like meat & laid in the middle of the street naked covered in blood .... yet she was eating OREO cookies, now I'm no expert but that cream filling ain't made from lettuce & them cookies damn sure ain't made without eggs & milk.

This dude I know tried to school me on 120s & Supreme Mathematics & then ordered a "pepperoni" pizza offered me a slice & got pissed when I declined. :smh:

I'm convinced some folks are just idiots. :dunno:

I am one of those :) my diet mostly consists of any and every type of grain, bean or veggie you could think of and i just keep changing it up. I do eat tofu and tempeh and make my own seitan but i try to avoid the processed packaged soy products but may use small amounts for flavour or garnish. I do not eat a lot of dairy, but a little good cheese once in a while is good! I eat eggs once in a while too but the brown ones. I have a weakness for huevos rancheros but only have them once in a while. The key here is balance and rotating foods and not having too much of any one thing although there is always collard greens and roasted broccoli and baked pumpkin in this house lol. At the end of the day there are a lot more things i can eat than i cant eat.

The vegans seem a bit too militant and joyless to me too. On top of it there are a lot of junk food vegans. They will scour ingredients off all the candy and cookies and chips and find the vegan ones even though they chemical laden and there are a lot of junk food vegan resturants with burgers, hot dogs, wings, etc and regular old processed white buns. Not into it at all.

Trying it out for 2011 ... no biggie stopped eating red meat and by products (milk, cheese, etc) a couple years ago ... really not that big on 'eating' as long as I get full I don't care too much ... so basically just had to stop eating fish (gulf oil spill ftw) it's really not that bad

Had pizza (soy cheese) and nachos (soy cheese and taco filling) yesterday while I watched the SB :dunno:

You mean they will die way before you. How many 100 year old people you know is vegan:confused: You need meat in your life to remain healthy. Healthy chemical free fish (not shell fish)is the best meat for human consumption. Healthy chemical free poultry (Chicken,Turkey)is second.
