U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

More details to come.

slain federal judge john roll was at the
center of arizona's immigration debate

Washington Post
by Jerry Markon
January 8th 2011

john. M. Roll, the federal judge killed saturday in the tucson shooting that critically wounded rep. Gabrielle giffords (d-ariz.), has been at the center of the state's complicated political battle over immigration.

In february 2009, roll received hundreds of threats after he allowed a lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against a rancher to go forward. "they cursed him out, threatened to kill his family, said they'd come and take care of him. They really wanted him dead," a law enforcement official told the washington post in may 2009.

Threats against federal judges and prosecutors nationwide have been soaring in recent years. There is no indication he was the gunman's target, and witness accounts describe the shooter as firing at giffords first.

U.s. Marshals put roll, who was appointed to the federal bench by president george h.w. Bush in 1991, under 24-hour protection for about a month. They guarded his home in a secluded area just outside tucson, screening his mail and escorting him to court, to the gym and even to mass.

Roll told the post in may 2009 that "any judge who goes through this knows it's a stressful situation" and that he and his family were grateful for the protection.

More than a year after the threats against roll, arizona passed what is considered the nation's toughest immigration law, triggering a fierce national debate over illegal immigration and a lawsuit against the state by the justice department.

Roll, a pennsylvania native, has served as the chief u.s. District judge in arizona since 2006. He is a former arizona state appeals court judge and a former assistant u.s. Attorney in arizona, focusing on prosecuting drug cases, according to his judicial biography on judgepedia

Another Suspect or Person of Interest Sought

Arizona’s Pima County Sheriff in Tucson said moments ago that police ARE looking for ANOTHER SUSPECT in the shooting of US Rep Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of US Judge John Roll. Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said that they do not know who the person is but they DO HAVE security video of him at the scene. The Sheriff said the suspect is is a white male in his 50s!

So apparently there is at least one other suspect out there roaming the streets in Tucson Arizona. Be safe Tucson!!

The Sheriff also said there is a “suspicious” package at Giffords Congressional office in Tucson. The area has been evacuated apparently.

Right wing on the defensive?

Sarah Palin Aide Rebecca Mansour: Our Crosshairs Map Had Nothing To Do With Violence Or Guns

WASHINGTON -- Shortly after news broke that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) had been shot at a congressional event in her district, observers began noting that she had, during the campaign, literally been Sarah Palin's target. But a Palin aide is now explaining that it was all a misunderstanding: the infamous image was never meant to evoke guns or violence.

Palin's "Take Back the 20" campaign (the website has been taken down since the shooting) called on Americans to vote out of office Democrats from conservative districts who had voted for health care reform.

On March 23, she posted an announcement about the campaign on her Facebook page, which was accompanied by an image of her targeted districts. The districts all had crosshairs over them, which are usually associated with gun sights.
But SarahPAC staffer Rebecca Mansour, who has been tweeting in defense of her boss since the tragedy took place, is stating that the crosshairs were never intended to be gun sights.

"We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights," she said in an interview with talk radio host Tammy Bruce Saturday. "It was simply crosshairs like you'd see on maps." Bruce suggested that they could, in fact, be seen as "surveyor's symbols." Mansour added that "it never occurred to us that anybody would consider it violent" and called any attempts to politicize the Arizona tragedy "repulsive."

The suggestion that the symbols were related to guns seemed to come, however, from Palin herself. On March 23, Palin tweeted to her supporters a note about the aforementioned Facebook message, writing, "Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: 'Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!' Pls see my Facebook page." And as Politico's Jonathan Martin points out, in November Palin boasted about defeating 18 of the 20 members on her "bullseye" list.

Of the 20 districts targeted by Palin, Giffords and Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.V.) were the only two candidates to win over her PAC's chosen Republicans.

Don't condone this but it shouldn't come as a surprise. There will be a lot more of it as jobs and wealth become concentrated and go overseas. Those people in office and self appointed leadership roles need to understand this is not central America it's the USA and we will not give up our rights without a fight.

I agree.......and I figured someone (Thought) would respond negatively

There's a lot of hopelessness out here, what people gotta realize is:

When people lose everything..........they lose it!

Unfortunately, this won't be the last bit of violence in the world.

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 01/09/2011 19:28 -0500

FBI

The WaPo shares the full criminal complaint with all 5 counts, as well as the affidavit by FBI special agent Tony Taylor which discloses that according to documents seized from 7741 N. Soledad Avenue in Tucson, Arizona, where Lougner resides, that there was an envelope recovered with "handwriting on the envelope stating "I planned ahead," and "My assassination" and the name "Giffords," along with what appears to be Loughner's signature." There goes the temporary insanity defense.

lol I'm just stating the facts as I see them but when it comes to extremism you are more of a loose cannon than I will ever be.

I Know, I advocate caring loaded guns around elected offices!

BTW, what rights have been taken away from you by the government?

Bullshit! Black folk have been taking an ass whooping forever. Why aren't they gunning down elected officials? Lord knows their have been many that deserved it.

Whites are seeing their world crumbling and they can't do anything about it! Using the "government" as the scapegoat, when it's the capitalists sucking the life out of their lives and country.

The world is moving forward while many on the right are pining for a past that never existed

Idk, but we somehow, find a way to take our aggressions out on each other (but thats another thread). Sometimes you just come across like black folks can't do shit when many blacks find a way to succeed. You just find a way to diminish the achievements of so many blacks who have risin to the pinnacle of their fields; Robert Johnson, Oprah, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, the list goes on. You tryin to tell me we can't compete with some of these crackaz out here?

I refuse to subscribe to your line of thinking

Maaaaan, How the fuck we movin' forward by goin into more debt? The only muhfuckaz movin forward is the banks collectin the interest from monopoly money

whites can't handle stress, I feel that this is just the beginning, the poor whites are slowly finding out that the powers that be don't give a shit about they broke asses either, and blaming this on the government, when the capitalist and industry have abandoned this country, what is happening is they have lost control of the resources, or should I say that this country no longer serves a useful purpose (labor cost to high, and we are broke, can't sustain the world consumer economy). They are going to let this country run itself into the ground and pull all of the money out of the country, and leave it to the minorities, the brown folks

What in the hell brought this on? Lamarr, one of the things I find with you is, you like so many under the age of 35, have such strong opinions based on half information or what a blog or video you have seen. If you just go to one thread on this board, "Unsung Heroes - Black History", I have posted many instances of how Black folk have succeeded and in fact risen to the top despite the odds. Black folk have made it in far worse times. In fact if it were not for many of those in that thread, no one would have ever heard of Robert Johnson, Oprah, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. Where are your contributions to this conversation or knowledge of such historical events?

My point is Black folk have had a bigger beef, far longer with this system than whites have ever had, yet even during the most hostile of eras in American history Black folk have never taken down a government official. And you and any white person deep down inside of your souls would have to admit that many should have!

Hey you are against regulation yet you want the government to bring back Glass Steagall, a government regulation, yet you hate the government. Organize your thoughs maaaaaan!
