A homeless man with a polished broadcasting voice was showcasing his unexpected talent on a radio station in Columbus, Ohio, this morning -- with a possible job offer as a result.
Ted Williams, 71 -- a Brooklyn native who begs with a sign saying he has a God-given gift of a great voice -- became an internet hit after a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch filmed him demonstrating his skill.
In the video, Brooklyn-born Williams delivers a pitch-perfect radio croon, explaining that he had trained to be a radio announcer before his career derailed and he ended up panhandling in Ohio.
"I just said, well, hey. I can't be an actor, I can't be an on-air personality, but the voice just became something of a development over the years and I went to school for it," he says.
"And then alcohol and drugs and a few other things became a part of my life. I've got two years clean, and I'm trying hard to get it back. And hopefully somebody from one of these television or radio stations will say, 'hey, I need a voice-over,' or ' I need something.'"
Media outlets have already begun expressing an interest in Williams' offer, including WNCI's morning radio show Dave and Jimmy, who organized a Wednesday morning interview slot for the burgeoning internet star.
Announcing the interview on their Facebook page, Dave and Jimmy wrote, "The homeless man with the awesome voice will be in our studio at 7:15am tomorrow [Wednesday]. We're going to find some way to help this guy!"
