That shit is so fucked up. Goddamn.

I'm pissed on one level that there was no redeeming quality in any of the men in this movie. And the one man who had relatable problems (Ealy - didn't say it was right but he was a vet on medication so I thought there might be a gleam of light and maybe a woman trying to help out) drops 2 kids off a fucking 5 story building.

What man in there right mind would make it their lifelong dream to produce this movie? That's what I heard Tyler Perry say once in an interview. I know there are some trifling men out there ladies but goddamn man.

I'm depressed now. Shit I might consider suicide after this shit. :smh: I know this has probably been discussed before but forgive me for being a typical man and being late on shit.

Ok my bad I forgot the breakdown. Here is my take per character.

Kimberly Elise - Shacking up with Ealy who was in the war and came back mentally unstable. Couldn't find a job. Couldn't go to school. Developed a drinking problem. Beat on wife and kids when he was drunk but seemed like he might really need some help. Drops kids off of 5 story fucking window. :smh:

Anika Noni Rose - Meets guy. Likes guy. Invites guy in home for dinner. Gets raped. Guy stabbed by next woman he rapes.

Thandie Newton - Likes dick. Loves dick. Hates momma and sister. No disease and doesn't like being laughed at. :hmm:

Janet Jackson - Control freak who couldn't keep her man's legs closed. Especially around other men. :hmm:

Kerry Washington - Slept with a man who fucked her freind and because she didn't go get treated for STD can't have a baby. I kind of felt sorry for this one but she taking it out on her new man so...

Loretta Devine - The voice of reason who couldn't reason with her goddamn self.

Tessa Thompson - Virgin gets knocked up and goes to get an abortion which is all fucked up.

And aparently NONE of these men were allowed to redeem or apoplogize for any of this shit because according to Janet women are tired of sorry's and can't use them any more. Nothing about the choices the women made though. Oh Phyllicia Rashad said one sideways thing about it.

Tyler is a bitch...as a child of sexual abuse I would figure Tyler would be more forgiving towards men

Interesting take. Why do the men have to redeem? Why not the women? This is why i dislike movies like this. Women aren't held accountable for anything.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. The women are left to look like victims when they made the choices. Like Tessa Thompson told the story of her being out with a guy who was drinking and horny and fucked in the backseat with no condom. Now the dude is the reason she might not go to college and damn near killed herself trying to get an abortion.

Never once did she speak to the dude or see if he would take responsibility. Men do that too you know. :dunno: Never hear about it but they do. Hell I did.

Ain't no way in hell with the hate this man got for men in his heart he wasn't raped as a kid man. Fuck that. He REALLY don't like us cuz. I mean even if he grew up watching his dad hit his momma and hated his dad like he said this shit is deeper than that. :smh:

Actually Duece I figure the exact opposite. Both him and Oprah seem stuck in their traumas of women who didn't protect them and men who victimized them. Oprah and Tyler seem to replay the archetypes of the weak, stupid, naively neglectful woman and the abusive aggressive man over and over again in many of their films. I actually loved Beloved but you know it's a hard ass movie to watch because the sadness and suffering is like in EVERY frame. I think it says something about their sadness that they seem willing to immerse themselves in these kind of tales over and over again. This movie (like Precious)- do not want. :smh: It's like I stopped reading fiction books about slavery. How many books about enslaved Africans horrible treatment can you read without wanting to slit your wrists?

I thought the earlier movies of his had good men in them. I can't knock the brother because he made a lifetime movie, which basically this movie is to me. But see this thread with some comments also http://www.bgol.us/board/showthread.php?t=541826
Had you read it you might have not watched that movie

I warned you people not to watch that movie. I'm all for supporting black people in positive endeavors but I WARNED ya'll this shit was depressing.

Yeah it's stuff like that, that i think is detrimental to a black females growth. All stuff like this does is show how women aren't ever expected to be accountable for what they do. They're never held to the fire and forced to face their decisions right there dead on, and maybe even show a woman making the RIGHT decisions.

Very true indeed sista Iz. I agree with this 100% aalong with what i said as well. Oprah and Tyler Perry are indeed exactly this. And making a killing off of it. And neither of them ever show anything positive about black women either if you ask me.

When Michael Ealy dropped them goddamn kids I damn near shed a tear. I have NEVER did some shit like that about a movie. How the fuck you put that on screen? Goddamn Perry!

Well some good did come of the movie. :) :hmm:

What up Rock. Or should I say...

You know I forgot Oprah made messed up movies about women too. :smh:

LET's be honest about it. The movie was a good movie. At the end the women did accept responsibility for their actions and began some form of atonement or healing. Those that were already in the healing process (the older ones) were reaching out to the younger ones. It showed women making a community effort to reach out to each other. It showed neighbors reaching out to each other. The movie was deep on many levels. It showed that sometimes some problems might be bigger than one can handle and one may need to ask for help. It also showed some are out of our control and our resolutions to them are different. For instance the rapist

I hear ya. I don't see it that way though. People won't take it that way. This movie and all the ones preceding it? Teach or TELL nothing or extol the virtues of ANYTHINg even coming close to, avoiding that nonsense in the first place. All of the nonsense.

Hill Harpers character was positive and understanding.

I watched it finally yesterday and thought it was a good movie.

Though Phylicia Rashard was tight

Thought all the women redeemed themselves at the end because after all the movie was about women and their problems .

This wasn't a movie about men.

A lot of what went on in this movie has happened to women I have known. It was relevant in the 70's when it was created and relevant now in the remake.

To many men on this board protest to much. Do you behave like the men in the movie? If so I see why your feelings are hurt. If not why do you pretend that this shit don't go on.

I see why TP makes womens movies because women will go to the show and pay their money. Me I watched the bootleg at the crib. Maybe if we as men jammed theaters he would make movies for us.

In any event I thought it was a good movie..

On a side note I had my older daughters watch the play years ago.

i just saw it today

i didnt like it at all

felt like i was watching a play...nothing to smile about durring the whole movie

i was over it a quarter way in:smh:

Not to ever defend Tyler's image creating, but Ntozake's choreopoems, although sexy as fuck in concision and poetic delivery, were pretty damaging to male images. I actually had to take a pause while reading them, mainly because I needed to ask my Self about what Black women really go through with men. I did feel Ntozake took the vet killing his children too far, but...It is her pain. Also, we have to remember that Nzingha made the original screenplay. I'd like to know what Nzingha added to Ntozake, and what Perry added to Nzingha...

But yeah, after all that...fuck tyler perry....

basically you can merge this thread with the 2000 page one on the main board that was started when the film actually came out. Maybe you should have watched the play or read the book before seeing the film and it would have given you some perspective about the stories.

EDIT: this film is an adaptatio of someone else's work. In no way did Tyler Perry CREATE this story. it is focused on the women and their relationship problems, NOT the men in the story. See some of his own work for that.

I agree with you on the money thing. Black women will damn near fall for any con that comes along. Religion on down.

Bullshit. Because women didn't like it either. My point is this is not a positive movie about black women at all. What lessons were learned? If you see your man looking at other men he gay? Don't invite men into your home that you are cool with or you might get raped? If you have a baby through your own actions getting an illegal abortion is cool as long as you take someone with you?

Come on man. I'm saying we are talking about a black movie here. A grand stage. He is probably going to win awards for this because people are too scared of the production of it to say different but I stand by what I said. When are we going to get some positive MALE role models out of this man's movies? Seriously?

I got the story. I did. You however didn't read what I said. Read it again and you might understand what I am saying.

Redeeming qualities. This is about personal struggles that women have with men...RELATED TO THEIR OWN CHOICES!!!

My point. But the men were put off as the REASONING for their choices. Not so. Loretta Devine's character for instance. Fickle ass man who just hop from bed to bed and take what he want from women. No mention of the fact that he was taking what was given.

I get that it was made for women. I get what the play was trying to say but it said the shit all wrong in my opinion. It put it off on the men. All of the problems instead of saying women look inside yourself. This looked like the lesbian recruitment video.

You obviously did not understand what you watched :dunno: it's all good.

Lots of women liked it. Funny thing is tho they're all churchy type folks too...Hmmmm. I agree it's not positive view of black women either. People will say it's positive but to me it's the same ole same ole. There's no message given. Not a positive 1 to me. It still says to black women, especially the YOUNG ones, yeah sure go fuck up your life the BEST way you can and still blame a man. It'll be all ok in the end.

Exactly.

The man got ol' girl pregnant. Nothing about her choices.

The man fucked around on ol' girl. Nothing about her allowing him to do it and come back time and time again.

The man was crazy and beat on her and killed her kids. Nothing about how she maybe should have left him?

The man gave her HIV. Nothing about how she didn't act on her suspicion until it was too late.

I get what the movie was trying to do. Trying to show strength but the message left me feeling fucked up for the women in it. Be strong while you getting fucked over cause you are woman hear you roar! :smh:

That's what I got out of it.
