Need advice re: Law Enforcement Employment

Greetings fellow members,
I've been considering applying for a position with either local PD or Sheriffs when I move to NC.
My only issue is with the criminal records portion. Back in 04, I was charged with receiving stolen property. I plead guilty and received 18 months HYTA probation. It was expunged after my successful completion. When I applied for my CCW last year in Michigan, I admitted to the State Police, my violation and they requested additional info and an interview. Anyway, I was given a CCW. My question is, most police employment applications that I've come across automatically exclude me because of what happened 6 years ago. What are the chances that if I keep it real and admit on the application that I'll be considered? I already know the alternative, that if I don't and do get employed that it could come back to bite me in the ass. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks..
I've served honorably with the Marines and the Army Nat'l Guard with two deployments to Iraq. One deployment in each branch.

I did bro and all they told me was to call the NC commision on law enforcement. I called them and she basically said it was my decision. She couldn't tell me what to do.
Basically Michigan State Police requested info from me because I'm thinking since the file was expunged they needed more clarification.

Be honestly and tell them the truth. If you show how serious you are about protecting the community they might give you a shot.
 
Expungements show up for law enforcement jobs. I believe it has to be over 7 years after u expunged to be considered, well in Nj it is.

For the charge of receiving stolen property, were you charged as a misdemeanor or felony? For instance in D.C. you can be charged for receiving stolen property under $250.00 is a misdemeanor over the $250.00 is a felony. Most police departments will only disqualify you from potential employment if you have been charged of a felony and not a misdemeanor.

If in fact it was expunged after serving a successful completion of probation, then you will need to have written documentation stating that to back your story when in an interview setting with any police department.

You should tell the truth but be very strategic about it. I have a friend that was in the same exact situation except he had been on probation for assault. All you have to do is engage in a community service that is preferably some type of vigilante work. This will show that you want to help people and are willing to independently take control of a situation if necessary. My friend actually beat up a mugger, hand cuffed him and took him into the precinct. The lieutenant there gave him a recommendation and he was good to go when he applied. Don't be afraid to jump in street fights and break them up or to take down a mugger. If you don't have the balls to do that, you're probably not fit for police work anyway. If you really want to be a cop, don't think, just do. If you can't take the guy into the precinct physically just take a picture or some video footage. Good luck.

Felony.. And I do have all the needed documents. What's strange is before I deployed to Iraq, they ran a security check on all of us, I had no issues. I'm not complaining at all for that. Thanks for the info

I was 20, so I received Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. Are you familiar with it? With HYTA, as long as the accused is under 21 at the time of the crime, and he completes probation successfully, the crime is never added to his/her permanent record. I also received a copy of the order to destroy the arrest documents.
 
Your best bet is to network with somebody in the HR or precinct...if somebody can vouch for you, you might be in.
 
ZERO CHANCE... your dumb ass plead to a crime of dishonesty... that shit will come up everytime youre called to testify in a case your involved in.... I know youre a DUMMY... and didnt know po po has to testify in court... but how a fool with a record gonna be po po...

there are also a number other reasons why youll never become POLICE with a record, but i aint got time teaching dummies...

If it is expunged you don't have to say shit... I wouldn't tell them anything since because it no longer appears on your record.
 
That's funny!!! Because I was just talking to a friend of mines high on the food train for CMPD, and yes they will look into that charge. The game has change a great deal do to the good ol' boy system especially in the south here.
 
Thanks everybody for the advice. Those that had nothing productive to say, God bless you anyway. No one is perfect, I made my mistake and paid for it. I'm just trying to survive so kick rocks and try someone else. To the guy that mentioned it, I'm not sure about the vigilante shit though. I do understand your point.
 
Spoke to a friend who recently became a cop and he said when you are filling out paperwork after passing the test etc, it specifically asks to list ANY incidents INCLUDING Expungements!! He also said you can still become a cop after a certain period of time and depending on the charge.

Wow, I had the same thing happen to me at age 20. You are alright dude. I had a Y.O.=Youthful offender and I have worked with state, fed, and local goverment since then...

Give up dude u already lost.... One word INTEGRITY, they will throw ur application right in the garbage... Im not trying to defeat your goals but all law enforcement agencies have access to sealed records...
