agree or disagree: TO over-rated?

Terrell Owens(notes) is the most overrated player in the NFL, according to his peers.
In a poll of 269 NFL players released on Wednesday by Sports Illustrated, Owens was named most overrated by 14 percent of respondents, far outdistancing Tony Romo(notes) (7 percent), Mark Sanchez(notes) (5 percent), Albert Haynesworth(notes) (5 percent) and Eli Manning(notes) (4 percent).

Though NFL players are usually paragons of sound judgment, I'm going to have to take issue with this one. T.O. is the "most" in many categories: loud, over-exposed, attention-seeking, annoying, reluctant to run a crossing route, likely to star in unwatchable television shows. But overrated? If anything he's been underrated this year.

Owens didn't sign until the eve of training camp and was only able to muster a one-year deal from the Cincinnati Bengals. Basically, every team in the NFL passed on him during the offseason. All he's done so far in 2010 is put himself on pace to post career highs in receptions and yards, yet you never hear about his play, just his antics.
And for that, he's overrated? Hmm ... maybe Donovan McNabb(notes) went Chicago-style on this ballot and voted more than once.

Always switching with Randy Moss for 2nd most td catches in NFL history is overrated?(not so much recently, but still)

My answer is no.

Disagree. Owens can be a huge attention whore and distraction but he has a history of production. Now that Romo boy keeps getting mentioned like he's an elite qb with nothing to show for it. This sounds more like jealousy and disapproval over Owens antics and attention paid to him than actually based on facts.

Haven't seen him play yet this season, but in his prime, Terrell Owens was a top flight WR. IMO, as good as 90% who've ever played the position. His only problem is the same problem most players have today: Too much fucking celebrations. It's cool to spike the ball, but they go overboard with the dumb shit.

thank you to all of the gentlemen who have taken time to respond.

i posted this because i thought it would be interesting to see the replies; for the record, i also disagree with a charge that TO is over-rated. he has had issues with dropped balls, but i believe over-rated is too harsh a label.

the reason why i felt this would be interesting is because some members on BGOL, lacking an independent subject knowledge base, blindly defer to "player endorsements" to assess player performance:

"________________ says ________________ is good/bad/overrated."

but this proves thread proves that SPORTS board members (so far) are capable of reaching our own conclusions; each of us responding has rejected the professional opinions of 37 NFL players.

It's funny you mentioned dropped balls because the only time I remember announcers really concentrating and knowing who led the league in dropped balls was when it was Owens.

owens was never the best in the league but
he definitely isn't the most overrated.

owens produces and he blocks.
he's probably a starter on every team in the league
except maybe the ravens and cowboys.

i only mention that because it builds some foundation for an "over-rated" claim.

terrell owens didn't help his cause with quotes like these:

"I know hands-down I'd be close to Jerry Rice's records if I had been with quality quarterbacks like he had," Owens said. "He had Joe Montana and he finished with Steve Young. That wasn't a dropoff.

"Say I had been with a guy like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Drew Brees all of my career. Are you kidding me
?"

Gotta wonder about the poll to begin with. Poll questioning NFL players?? What would be the purpose of such a poll except to stir up resentments among the players? Would not be surprised if many of them even bothered to answer the question (unless the pollsters tricked the players into answering by asking the question a different way)

no fuckin way is he over rated, just because you have a lot of similiar athletes, and personally T.O gets on my nerves but the dude is a way above average player.

I would have said Eli a year ago, but all that fuckin pampering he got all his life is paying off nicely...

I would have to say tony romo, because every year he sucks and every year it was some fuckin dumb ass bullshyt...

I mean blaming jessica simpson cmom.... her blow job skill kept his has more competitive than he is now.

I agree with your "overboad" comment. I enjoyed the way Art Monk "celebrated" a TD catch. No strutting; no falling on the knees with arms thrust skyward; no hands on the hips with chest poked out. Art just simply did a backward spike from the waist. That shit was effective and just plain cool. :hmm:

TO is actually on pace for career highs in catches and yards now. 2 more TDs last night too

The fact that TO was left off of NFL network's Top 100 list is enough for me to believe that he is underrated.

I know the article is for this season specifically but player polling should be taking with a grain of salt, solely based on how they're conducted.

i've been telling this to people FOR YEARS, but it's funny how they always want to quote random players out of context, edit audio clips from head coaches, and cite GM polls.

he certainly an asshole, but def underrated historically imo

that fact that he was left off that 100 list, was some bs imo, I love mike irvin, but I dont see how he made it and not TO

3 rings sure had something to do with it lol

the real question is who gets in the hall first Hines ward or TO????

no. warren sapp said it best on the nfl network. you CAN NOT look at his numbers and producyion and call him over rated. over exposed, by his own doing -yes. i hate his attitude and me-first nature, but he is still a top 8 receiver hands down.
