Ex Machina is an American creator-owned comic book series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris, and published by DC Comics under the Wildstorm imprint.

The series details the life of Mitchell Hundred (also known as The Great Machine), the world's first and only superhero, who, in the wake of his actions on 9/11, is elected Mayor of New York City. The story is set during Hundred's term in office, and interwoven with flashbacks to his past as the Great Machine. Through this, the series explores both the political situations Hundred finds himself in, and the mysteries surrounding his superpowers.

Great drop.

That series was so good that I went out and bought it. It's a definite hand me down to the next generation. The ending was breath taking.

ellis-global-frequency-dr.jpg

The Global Frequency is an independent, covert intelligence organization headed by a former intelligence agent who uses the alias of Miranda Zero. There are reportedly 1,001 people on the Global Frequency, forming an active smart mob communicating by specially modified video mobile phones through a central dispatch system coordinated by a young woman code-named Aleph.

The purpose of the organization is to protect and rescue the world from the consequences of the various secret projects that the governments of the world have established, which are unknown to the public at large. The people on the Global Frequency are chosen and called on for their specialized skills in a variety of areas, from military personnel, intelligence agents, police detectives to scientific researchers, academics, athletes, former criminals and assassins. These threats that the organization deals with are equally varied and usually world-threatening, ranging from rogue military operations and paranormal phenomena to terrorist attacks and religious cults.

The existence of the organization is an open secret, but its membership list is anonymous, the identities of its field agents unknown to even each other before they meet on a mission. Often the only way to tell a member of the Global Frequency is by the phones that they carry or the Global Frequency symbol—a circle with four points on its perimeter 90 degrees apart—that they sport somewhere on their person.

Who exactly funds the Global Frequency is not known. Zero has said that at least some of the money comes from the G8 governments who pay the Frequency for not revealing the various secret horrors they deal with. Although the presence of an independent, unaccountable agency with strike capability makes some authorities nervous, they also recognize the fact that the Frequency has the skills, the reach and, more importantly, the will to act where they cannot. As a result, the organization gets tacit approval for its activities, and is sometimes called on by governments to deal with extraordinary crises. Mostly, however, the organization acts proactively as it discovers such threats.

Ellis designed the comic series like a television series with standalone "episodes", allowing the reader to begin with any issue and be able to understand what was going on. As a result, the only regular characters in the series are Miranda Zero and Aleph, with only a few other characters making a reappearance in the twelfth issue of the series. This also heightened the suspense, as the reader did not know if these characters would survive the mission, which sometimes they did not.

cross1w.jpg

The story follows survivors dealing with a plague that causes it victims to carry out their most evil thoughts and wishes. Carriers of the virus are known as the Crossed due to a cross-like rash that appears on their faces. This contagion is primarily spread through bodily fluids, which the Crossed have used to great effect by treating their weapons with their fluids.

The main story takes place ten months after the first outbreaks, with flashbacks to those events. It is narrated in the past tense.

250px-Hitman_21_-_Cover.jpg

H47-Cover111.jpg

Hitman chronicles the exploits of Tommy Monaghan, an ex-Marine Gulf War veteran turned contract killer from the Cauldron, a lower-class Irish district of Gotham City. He first appears in The Demon Annual #2 (part of the "Bloodlines" crossover in the summer of 1993), when he is attacked and bitten by a Bloodlines parasite called Glonth. Instead of dying, the bite unexpectedly triggers his metagene and grants him x-ray vision and moderate telepathy. A side effect is that his corneas and irises are solid black, indistinguishable from his pupils; the sight managed to unnerve Batman when he first saw them. The inherited powers later come with limits, however, and Monaghan utilizes them selectively, both because of the difficulty of concentrating during an explosive firefight and the side effects of their extended use (which includes anything between a headache and a minor illness).

After gaining these powers, Monaghan decides to specialize in killing metahumans and supernatural threats, targets typically shunned by conventional contract killers as too dangerous or too expensive. Despite his powers, Monaghan relies most on his creativity, improvisational abilities, and impressive gunfighting skills to take down a majority of his targets. This specialty line of work gives him an edge over his competition, but also leads him to encountering a number of eclectic characters including demons, zombies, dinosaurs, gods, superheroes and supervillains, as well as more conventional, realistic characters such as CIA agents, the SAS and the Mafia.

The series is firmly entrenched in the DC Universe. Batman, The Joker, Green Lantern, Catwoman, Etrigan, and Superman all guest star at various points, and joking references are frequently made to then-current DC happenings (such as the long-haired Superman). The series also crossed over with many DC events, including Final Night, One Million, and No Man's Land. There was even a one-shot pairing Monaghan with Lobo, and Monaghan has made a few appearances outside of the series (see below).

Although the character adopts the moniker "Hitman" in his first appearance, he only refers to himself by that name once in his own series, in the very first issue; the rest of the time, he is referred to by his given name (although he was sometimes called "Hitman" in guest appearances).

Read the recap pages.

nextwave01.jpg

"I took The Authority and I stripped out all the plots, logic, character and sanity. (...) It's an absolute distillation of the superhero genre. No plot lines, characters, emotions, nothing whatsoever. It's people posing in the street for no good reason. It is people getting kicked, and then exploding. It is a pure comic book, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. And afterwards, they will explode."

—Warren Ellis

Warren Ellis & Stuart Immonen's irreverent parody of Super Teams, which featured five relatively obscure Super Heroes fighting the forces of H.A.T.E. , a S.H.I.E.L.D-style organization who were discovered to be in league with the Beyond Corporation, the current incarnation of their former rivals, S.I.L.E.N.T. (Who doesn't love a good acronym?)

The Team Consisted of:

* Monica Rambeau (Formerly known as Captain Marvel and Photon): The leader of the group. She used to lead The Avengers, and reminds her teammates of this fact at every available opportunity.
* Tabby "Taby" Smith (formerly known as Boom-Boom & Meltdown): A trailer-trash klepto with the "mutant powers of blowing things up and stealing all your stuff" (actual description). Her theft of the Beyond Corporation's Marketing Plan provided the impetus for the team to leave the employ of H.A.T.E.
* Aaron Stack (formerly known as X-51 & Machine Man): A surly, alcoholic, robotic Jerkass. Ended up as Ensemble Darkhorse for precisely those reasons.
* Elsa Bloodstone: Daughter of a famous monster hunter, she was the series' resident Action Girl.
* The Captain (Formerly known as Captain Power, Captain Ron, Captain L. Ron, Captain Universe, Captain Ultra, Captain Avenger, Captain Avalon, Captain Marvel, Captain ☠☠☠☠, and various others before finally giving up): An idiot from Brooklyn who received his powers from benevolent aliens while drunkenly stumbling home. Subversion of The Good Captain and frequent victim of The Worf Effect. The only member of Nextwave created specifically for the series.

The series ran for 12 issues, with each story arc being two issues long (although a case can be made for the final arc actually being four issues long). Plot wasn't a high priority, and served mostly as an excuse for the team to beat things up and cause things to explode.

All the martial arts cats on here will really love this one if you haven't read it. One of my faves.

The story introduces Orson Randall, Daniel Rand's immediate predecessor, who reneged on his responsibilities to K'un L'un after suffering immense psychological trauma during the First World War. Randall is discovered in Thailand; apparently preserved by the spirit of Shou-Lao and in full possession of his powers, but living in drug-soaked seclusion. Randall is pursued by agents of the Steel Serpent and the terrorist group HYDRA. Jolted out of his decades-long ennui, Randall seeks out Daniel Rand in New York and gives him The Book of the Iron Fist, a sacred ledger supposedly containing all the Kung-fu secrets of previous Iron Fists, which Randall claims will be necessary if Rand is to compete successfully in the coming tournament of the Seven Champions.

406px-Weapons.jpg

The Immortal Weapons were brought together during the tournament at the Heart of Heaven. Each member represents a different Capital City of Heaven, and each champion fights for their city's right to appear on the Earth once every decade instead of once every five. The oldest and most feared Immortal Weapon is the Prince of Orphans, and it was he who assembled the warriors together to face a common threat. The forces of Hydra, under the leadership of a man called Mr. Xao, were going to destroy the city of K'un-Lun. However, the destruction of that city would have led to the destruction of all the cities that made up the Heart of Heaven. Fearing for the safety of their cities, the other Immortal Weapons joined the Prince's cause. Fat Cobra, Dog Brother #1, Tiger’s Beautiful Daughter, and the Bride of Nine Spiders fought together to ensure Hydra's downfall. Only Davos refused the Prince of Orphans' offer to be a part of their revolution but came to his senses once he realized the error of his ways. The Immortal Weapons, along with Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Colleen Wing, Misty Knight, Lei Kung and his Army of Thunder, defeated the corrupt Yu-Ti, Mr. Xao and Hydra, guarantying their cities safety. After the smoke cleared, the Immortal Weapons decided to stay together on Earth to investigate Xao's claims of an Eight Capital City of Heaven.

Holden Carver, a.k.a. The Conductor (although he prefers going by his real name), is placed undercover in Tao's criminal organization by John Lynch, the director of International Operations after being fused with an alien artifact that makes him impervious to pain, gives him a powerful healing factor, and allows him to store pain he receives and pass it on to others through skin contact. Holden hates these abilities and constantly wishes to be rid of them. Lynch falls into a coma after being shot by Grifter (who had been brainwashed by Tao), leaving Holden with no link to the outside world.

He quickly rises through the ranks of Tao's syndicate and becomes one of his lieutenants, called "Prodigals". He falls in love with another Prodigal named Miss Misery and befriends Genocide Jones, a super-strong, bullet-proof member of Tao's organization. The series also focuses on Holden's internal struggle over whether or not there is a difference between his actions while serving Tao and his actions while serving Lynch.

Tao learns of Holden's true allegiance, and Holden is forced to live on the run. With the help of Peter Grimm, his most trusted Prodigal, Tao captures Holden and tells him that he is a survivor, past petty concepts like "good" and "evil." Beginning to believe Tao and seeing no other options, Holden rejoins Tao's organization, this time as a true criminal.

"Your World, Only Better"

The WildCats have come a long way from being a Covert Action Team, as WILDCATS Version 3.0 explores the decidedly corporate machinations of Jack Marlowe and the Halo Corporation. From Third World factories to Los Angeles accounting firms, nothing under Marlowe's corporate umbrella is left unscathed. And those who don't like his plans are introduced to his deadly former teammate, Cole Cash, a.k.a. Grifter!

Exactly how does a modern multinational conglomerate go about taking over the world? And how do the other members of the WILDCATS cast - Grifter, Wax, C.C. Rendozzo, the mysterious Agent Orange, and several new characters - fit into its plans?

Crimson revolves around a young man named Alex Elder who is attacked by a gang of vampires while out late with his friends. Bitten, Alex is saved by Ekimus, the last of an ancient race pre-dating humanity, who claims Alex is the chosen one. Alex becomes the first and last of his kind, gaining powers beyond that of a normal vampire. As the chosen one, he will bring the end to vampirekind. The series follows Alex as he adjusts to life as a vampire and shoulders the responsibilities of the chosen one. The comic features not only vampires, but werewolves and other supernatural beings and elements, as well as Biblical themes and deities.
