Why Are Black Bikers More Likely to Die in Crashes than Whites?

Motorcycle accident–related fatalities account for 1 in every 8 deaths on the road. And a new study suggests that blacks are at higher risk than whites: for every two white motorcyclists who die in accidents, three of their African-American counterparts do not survive.

Johns Hopkins researchers analyzed 68,840 motorcycle accidents recorded by the National Trauma Data Bank between 2002 and 2006. The data show that black riders were 50% more likely to die than white riders, despite the fact that African Americans were more likely to be wearing helmets at the time of the crash. The disparity held up even after controlling for the severity of the accident, the biker's gender and insurance status. White bikers not wearing helmets were still less likely to die in a crash than black bikers wearing helmets; the highest risk group were blacks riding without protective head gear. The study published in the American Journal of Surgery suggests that safety interventions, like helmet laws, don't help everyone equally. "Helmet for helmet, African Americans have more lethal injuries," said Adil Haider, senior author and assistant professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in a statement.

The authors hypothesize that the disparity may be due to differences in levels of health care before and after the accidents: lack of health insurance, less access to or poorer quality of critical care, and a higher rate of pre-existing conditions may make recovery after a crash more complicated for blacks.

It's also possible that black motorcyclists prefer wearing less-protective helmets or riding more dangerous bikes. Researchers won't know without further study.

BTW, a 600 bike and I were going at it (3x) from avenue to avenue on 34th street last Thursday night (I was in the G37 convertible). He lost each time cuz he kept missing his gears...

Wonder why its just a black/white study?

Maybe its the type of bike. I see more whites on harleys but a growing number of blacks riding harleys also.

And many states donot enforce proper motorcycle license. More whites may have the financial capabilities to take an extra motorcycle safety and awareness class or two.

more white people rider choppers, black folks ride sport bikes, not that choppers are safer but there are more temptation to speed on a sport bike

This was posted on my M/C board this weekend. The thread is already 4 pages deep. Some good info, some funny info, and some racist peeps surfacing are all contained in the thread.

The thing is most newer African American riders get the idea of riding from watching Ruff Ryders Music Videos, and Jamel down the block with the "Ninja Bike" who does wheelies. :hmm: Or from a pack of idiots posing in front of the club or balling through the city.

They have had no experience on two wheels generally speaking up until when they get the idea to buy a motorcycle and then they want a Busa because they hear a Busa is the biggest, baddest machine out. They don't want to be seen on a trainer 250 - that's a "pussy bike."

And in all this, they'll never think to take an MSF course or open a book to learn the finer points of bike control, suspension set-up, tire profile, braking, etc. etc.

They'll buy gear that look "good" instead of buying the best gear possible and always wearing it.

==================

On the flipside, white people tend to start on dirtbikes as a kid - they watch AMA and read Keith Code books. They go to track days. They can tell you the latest specs on Sidi Boots or argue over the merits of Arai vs AGV vs Suomy. They'll have no qualms about starting on a little 250 for a year, moving up to a 600, then get a 1000 or larger bike.

In all, they're more experienced riders mentally and maturity wise, not just skillwise.

your so right man this dude on base copped a 250 and pulled up in the dorms on that bitch :lol::lol::lol: How about everyone was clowning on him so hard he took that bitch back the next week i dont know how but he came back with a 750 then the next week i see this dude in a cast and has bike totaled he ran into the back of a SUV :lol::lol::lol:

with that being said i plan on taking the courses and doing things the right way i definitely was suppose to be riding this summer but had other financial obligations (helping broke ass family members out) but next summer ill be doing my laps around 285

hell give me my 600 and im good people keep telling me im a big dude so i probably want to get a 750 but we will see i feel comfortable riding both so its whatever i can get a deal on

I wanted a bike and seriously considered it but every time I got serious, someone in my town would die. Now, I am like, no thanks....

We are 50% more times likely to die from a M/C crash?really?I think this is bullshit.
Who's keeping tabs on some shit like that.
Black riders should have a little more skills than some of those white boys because alot of times they are riding in an urban area's where its stop & go,bumper to bumper and silly ass drivers who do silly things behind the wheel of a car.That alot,I see could make your chances of death higher but thats in there.

yeah people hit it on the head... it should be the style of bike.. because as stated more whites ride harleys... and african americans ride the crotch rockets...

me personally I like Goldwings....

It ain't the size of the bike, it's why you ride it. Same mentality with life choices, fashion, and music.

Dude trying to get the biggest and best to appease other dudes.. :smh:

The bike I am eyeballing would kill a "novice" crotch-rocket-rider. I still have not picked it up yet......(maybe when I go back to LA)

Researching that modified exhaust as we speak:
@4:30

I'm not even going to lie... I was at the bike dealership looking at a new Bimmer sport bike.... that boy is NASTY

If you're not an experienced rider, I suggest you stay FAR FAR away from that bike.

The S1000RR is not for novices. It has MORE power than a Hayabusa and weighs less.
