No tv series before had ever utilized music, fashion and cinematography like Miami Vice. If you're old enough to remember watching the series in '85/'86 you'll remember this scene. It was AWESOME! The buzz about the show was huge!

Don Johnson ... Detective J More..ames Crockett (111 episodes, 1984-1990)
Philip Michael Thomas ... Detective Ricardo Tubbs (111 episodes, 1984-1990)
-----------
Miami Vice is noted for its innovative use of music, particularly countless pop and rock hits of the 1980s and the distinctive, synthesized instrumental music of Jan Hammer. While other television shows used made-for-TV music, Miami Vice would spend $10,000 or more per episode to buy the rights to original recordings. Getting a song played on Miami Vice was a boost to record labels and artists. In fact, some newspapers, such as USA Today, would let readers know the songs that would be featured that week.[13] Among the many well-known bands and artists who contributed their music to the show were Roger Daltrey, El Debarge, Devo, Jackson Browne, Meat Loaf, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel, ZZ Top, The Tubes, Dire Straits, Depeche Mode, The Hooters, Iron Maiden, The Alan Parsons Project, Godley & Creme, Corey Hart, Glenn Frey, U2, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Foreigner, The Police, Red 7, Laura Branigan, Ted Nugent, Suicidal Tendencies, The Damned, and Billy Idol. Several artists even guest-starred in episodes, including Phil Collins,[14] Miles Davis, The Power Station, Glenn Frey, Suicidal Tendencies, Willie Nelson,[Ted Nugent, Frank Zappa, The Fat Boys, and Sheena Easton. An iconic scene from the Miami Vice pilot involves Crockett and Tubbs driving through Miami at night to Phil Collins' hit song "In the Air Tonight".

Jan Hammer credits executive producer Michael Mann for allowing him great creative freedom in underscoring Miami Vice. The collaboration resulted in memorable instrumental pieces, including the show's title theme, which climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in November 1985. The Miami Vice original soundtrack, featuring Jan Hammer's #1 hit theme song and Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City" (a #2 hit), stayed on the top of the U. S. album chart for 11 weeks in 1985, making it the most successful TV soundtrack at the time. The Miami Vice Theme was so popular that it also garnered two Grammy Awards in 1986. "Crockett's Theme", another recurring tune from the show, became a #1 hit in several European countries in 1987.

During the show's run, three official soundtrack albums with original music from the episodes were released. Hammer has released several albums with music from the series; among them are Escape from Television (1987), Snapshots (1989) and, after countless requests from fans, Miami Vice: The Complete Collection (2002).

WOW, it's been that long already? I used to beg my mom, tooth and nail, that I was old enough to watch this. I mean, who didn't want to be Tubbs?

Come to think of it, that is what turned me on to Miami. Finally went in 2002 and knew that I had to own property there before I die. Beautiful.

peace

Was too busy enjoying living Hip Hop & running around high school to wanna watch it back then; plus the fucking pastel colors drove me crazy, kids trying to dress like them, rocking espedrills (sp) on their feel like my Moms & the over the top coke shit, just wasnt fucking with it@ the time :smh:
but just happened to see that 86 joint with the FatBoys
(selling loose joints, rocking cuffed jeans & Filas, tight polo shirts a starter jacket with dookie trunk jewelry ) on it last night when that racecar driver dropped the hooker
(THINK That was homegirl who was selling ass in Colors lol) out of his moving whip on the streets of Miami while losing Crocket & Tubbs through a chase in the city;

in 86, when kats used to carry 'boxes' & actually 12"s & albums on em, my dude from Brooklyn used to WALK with CominInTheAir in his bag in the summertime like a dj but wasnt one lol just in case we were @ a jam & could get the dj to put this on.

peace

Re: Miami Vice- Pilot Episode, 26 yrs ago tonight (16 Sept. 1984),The Iconic Scene th

i loved the fact that it was such a departure from all the other "cartoonish" tv shows that the industry was producing.

Michael Mann brought a sense of realism and detail to the gun scenes, plus good guys got shot and or killed on the regular.

you had to pay attention to the story and dialogue to get, not just watch it mindlessly.

best death scene of the series: Wesley Snipes getting blasted in the middle of the street.

best episode: "Bushido", the eighth episode of Miami Vice's second season.

by the way before castillo ther was another lt right did he got killed?

yeah, it was Julio from Sanford and Son.

according to wiki he asked to be written out of the series after the 4th episode. i seem to remember him getting caught up on some charges.

Re: Miami Vice- Pilot Episode, 26 yrs ago tonight (16 Sept. 1984),The Iconic Scene th

The first Lieutenant was the guy that played Julio on Sanford & Son. He got merked I think while standing on Sonny's boat.

Great show, and to think, when it first came on, I watched, and loved that pilot episode, but when they put it on it's regular Friday night slot, I didn't start watching, because it was on at the same time as my favorite show at the time... "Matt Houston"

I finally did start tuning in though after my brother convinced me, and my high school film teacher started using Michael Mann's direction or production style on the show in his lectures about new film noir on television.

Once they got rid of the black ferrari though, it was a wrap.

Trudy though.... damn...them skirts!!!!

Pretty interesting to watch "Cocaine Cowboys" after having watched this series years before. I mean the show was glitz and drama and all, but it kind of puts things into perspective for the time period. The way all that coke money was flowing around Miami, building South Beach up, dudes buying new rolls royce's every two weeks, etc.

Cocaine Cowboys really shed light on understanding that era in Miami.

hell yeah... that one white dude who was one of the main ones bringing the shit into the states... he was saying that him and his girl got into a fight, so they each destroyed each others Rolls (or some other incredibly expensive rides) and then I think they stayed together after that
